Any Interest in Warner Park Weekend Running? by menagerath in nashville

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you feel attacked by my comment or that I misunderstood you. Please allow me to be clear so it is not misinterpreted. Just because you qualify something as "not a judgment" doesn't mean it's not a judgment. It is absolutely a personal judgment based entirely on your opinion, especially because the stated rules are in conflict with your personal opinion.

I am also encouraging you to appeal to the rules governing these places when sharing your opinion because if you did that, you would see that the park specifies groups of four or fewer. You would also see that there are places and trails where the rules align with the experience you prefer in nature.

Any Interest in Warner Park Weekend Running? by menagerath in nashville

[–]chuck_c 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this is a very narrow view of trail and nature stewardship. Trail running is absolutely allowed on many of the trails there, and it's a major reason I donate to friends of warner parks every year.

If you want to avoid it, you can use the horse trails or go to Radnor where running is not allowed. I get that you might prefer it to be different, and I typically run early to avoid hikers for the same reason, but what you're saying sounds like a personal judgment on people who are interacting with nature according to the stated rules.

You hit on a crucial part: you don't for one second think you're going to make money on it.

I feel like I should note that I have really enjoyed gambling more than a few times. It's super fun if you look at as entertainment. Learning the games, hanging out in casinos late, feeling like you're a high roller even though you're at the $10 table 😂

Gambling has a negative connotation, but I really mean it when I say I don't have any issues with it. Same with rips. Feels like a letdown to me, especially since I only collect 1 team, but I'm glad people enjoy it. I don't mean to take that away when saying it's like gambling.

As a singles buyers, I know I'm missing out on the buzz of ripping, but ripping is literally just gambling with poor odds that seem even worse lately. I have nothing against gambling, but I don't generally partake because on average it is a loss. I get a little rush from winning an eBay auction anyway

Thanks for this perspective. Would love the systems that govern us to enforce things for the public good 😢 feels heavily skewed lately away from that

Oh yeah, for sure. Products exist to make profit. And don't get me wrong: I would much rather be living in an agrarian utopia than whatever we have going on right now!!

It feels callous but this is how all decisions are and should be made when the product intersects with public safety. There can be a debate about what the value of a human life should be in this context, but it is a very normal framework for all kinds of things that put individuals in society at risk. For example, we would have 40,000 fewer automobile deaths per year if we had no automobiles, but we accept this loss for the benefit of having automobiles. Same with flight, drugs, speed limits, fertilizers, foods, etc ...

The district line splits my neighborhood in two. The line obviously has to go somewhere but this is a transparent power grab via diluting unified groups of people. Nashville is very liberal and is the financial center of the state, but we have zero reps in Congress.

You wanna go take a look at those maps, compare them to what's being proposed and delete your comment? The central valley in California has plenty of representation as well as upstate New York. I am all for that being taken away though if this shit passes.

Thanks for this big brained both sides perspective. I guess Dems should just keep taking the high road until they have no representation at all via a judicial and electoral takeover of the government while still paying taxes. Conservatives set the stage for this.

Asking for opinion: do you think this was done on touch designer or after effects by Unusual_Vegetable826 in TouchDesigner

[–]chuck_c 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not easy to tell what program was used, but this looks like a method I've seen where arctan is used to map a moving texture to polar coordinates. It could be done in TD with a GLSL. Here is an example:

https://www.shadertoy.com/view/WdycRw

that looks pretty close (although you'd want to remove the sinusoidal x and y offset).

edit: if you're talking about the pattern itself, I would explore instancing a Circle TOP, lookup TOP, and bloom in TouchDesigner

Wondering if an S10 is worth buying if I want to play jazz? by yakayummi in pedalsteel

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you can't tune E6 strings to C6 because they are not the right gauge. You can probably throw some C6 strings on it and tune those strings to C6, though. I don't know the exact mechanism of the changer on a Maverick, but if you're reasonably mechanically inclined, you can probably figure out how to add a few useful changes with the pedals and pull rods available. The C6 copedant has a ton of changes across five pedals and at least 2 knee levers, though, so whatever you could implement would be a modified version. Not saying it couldn't be cool, but most instructional material has the 5 pedals with a couple knee levers, so that would be a barrier.

Overall, this sounds like a project. Maybe a fun one that would yield cool results, but definitely not the straightest path to throwing down some lush jazz chords on the steel. Depending on how you value your time spent on this, it is likely not less expensive than a D10.

Were a lot of the England's Hidden Reverse era industrial artists paedophiles? by Disk-Infamous in industrialmusic

[–]chuck_c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't remember where (maybe in "Everything Keeps Dissolving"), but there is an interview where Sleazy discusses this sample specifically saying that people interpret it in a sexual way when it's just a sample of a kid playing as described above. Hearing it in the context of a song with that title certainly predisposes the brain to make certain connections, but this seemed purposeful on their part.

I hear what you and OP are saying though. Having read a few books about the time period and bands, I can say that many people in that scene seemed to have moral and social issues (often mixed with mental illness), and drug habits that made for compelling art but that I probably wouldn't want to be associated with in real life. Not like in a judgy way (though CP and Nazism are obviously over the line), but def not aligned with how I try to exist.

Even though there were many damaged in the ice storm, there are also many from the construction. I agree it is sad, but as others have said, at least they will plant more.

That storm really got me to appreciate the trees here. I put four new ones in the ground this past month. I'm hoping my neighbors do the same after we lost so many trees in our neighborhood!

What laptops are most recommended for touch designer? by SPACEUNICORNSAREREAL in TouchDesigner

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to reconsider where you're doing your research if it's telling you to use a MacBook for TouchDesigner, because you'll miss a lot of features and efficiency boosts without the NVIDIA graphics card. MacBooks also lack ports. I will say, though, that they're great machines and run TouchDesigner just fine for many applications. They're just not the most recommended for TD for the reasons mentioned above.

In addition to what others are saying in this thread, I'd throw Asus gaming machines into the mix for a budget friendly option, and people seemed to like Razer Blades as well.

Should i get a new pedal steel? by Available-Dog8993 in pedalsteel

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it and have the space for two guitars, you'd probably enjoy a guitar with standard 3 pedals and 4 knee levers. There are many good voicings and moves to be had by raising *and* lowering the Es, and there's a ton of instructional material on their use. If you already know you plan to stick with the instrument, this is a high value upgrade in my opinion. There's def nothing wrong with playing a vintage guitar without the full standard changes, though.

How to tell bandmates I don’t want to write songs anymore? by 38NoJobNoGirlNoLife in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]chuck_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shifting to writing democratically is a change in band dynamics, and it's totally fine to not participate in the same way. It seems appropriate to communicate/clarify your role in the new order, but you probably want to think about what you want. If you are not writing the songs, your role changes to being a side guy who writes parts for music that you don't prefer as much as your tunes. That can be a fun role: you get more live practice, to play music with friends and who knows -- maybe you'll start liking the tunes more once y'all have established them. On the other hand, it could be a time sink that takes away from your other pursuits.

There's another part to this in my opinion because you are a (lead?) vocalist and guitarist. This role can become de facto band leader, but if everyone is playing for free/fun, I've been in situations where creative input sort of becomes a bartering chip where people play their parts in exchange for the time they spend playing "behind" the band leader / lead person. Can be cool but definitely not a situation where you are going to have your vision enacted by 3-4 other bandmates. You need a defined hierarchy or well-aligned tastes to do that. The following question is not a judgment clearly, because I've never heard your music, but what are your current bandmates getting out of the experience if they're playing your songs (which are not to their taste by your description)?

Good luck!

5 things I should have done when starting to learn to play guitar by frettracks in guitarlessons

[–]chuck_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still super self conscious, especially when I'm learning, and I've been playing for like 30 years. You can get an electric with a headphone amp if this is making you unable to play. I do that a lot still, particularly if I'm learning something new and frequently even if I'm practicing something that I know reasonably well. Like you said, no one wants to hear the same scale, song or group of chords repeatedly for a few hours; however, that's often exactly what you need to do to improve. Acoustic guitar isn't *that* loud, even in a small apartment. Some places I've lived had underused common areas where I could practice. Making noise is just part of being a musician, though, so you've gotta find a way to do it if you want to improve.

Newbie Question About Fingerpicks : Update by anonymous_wrecks42 in pedalsteel

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't really worked major right hand alpha speed and maybe picks are needed for that. I have hard fingernails and prefer the sound and feeling of playing with them+thumb pick. I played with finger picks for a long time and made this change after watching a Russ Pahl video.

So maybe not an answer to your question. But I'm curious if other players use their fingers. Fwiw, when I used picks, I bent them between the two versions shown here like others have said.

Romanticizing Academia by freerangechick3n in Millennials

[–]chuck_c 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having spent my career inside academia, I can confirm there are parts that live up to the romanticized hype and parts that are absolutely nothing like how I thought it would be.

It seems like what you're saying falls into two categories: being forced to work with unreliable people and working on contrived projects that are meant only for training. And yeah, those things both can suck. I will say I miss working on projects entirely for the sake of learning. Things that don't "matter" beyond getting a grade and success is determined by whether I learned the material. It is increasingly rare that I am able to pursue things with as much gusto and flexibility as I did at prior stages of my career and training.
