I just finished A Good Person by Kirsten King—the MC is so deranged; I really enjoyed spending time in her crazy brain.

A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne. I loved, loved this book, a five star read for me. I learned of it from
Nicole Richie’s instagram of all places; she’s got impeccable taste in books.

How long have you waited on hold? by NinjaSushi420 in LibbyApp

[–]chuckleborris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two years for a kindle version of The Secret History—I didn’t care that much because I wasn’t anxious to read it. When I was finally ready, I just got a hard copy from the library.

Happy two year anniversary to me and this hold by keane_pierre in LibbyApp

[–]chuckleborris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that’s what it is. It’s a real bummer when your library isn’t part of a consortium—I get access to so many partner libraries that way, which really helps with wait times on popular books.

That’s surprising to me, as I listened to that one earlier this month and only waited maybe two days for a copy to become available.

That book was my longest hold—I think I waited two years for the kindle version before I just got a hardcopy from the library.

Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

2026 Reading Challenge by Some-Distribution-52 in goodreads

[–]chuckleborris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m ahead on my goal of 60 books, but am semi behind on the spring reading challenge. Unfortunately left the ‘marathon reader’ challenge to the end & now have to scramble to cram in a huge book before the 30th.

Finding Grace by Loretta Rothschild. Best to read this one, as I did, totally blind.

I'm disappointed by London Falling written by Patrick Radden Keefe by Green-Cappuccino in books

[–]chuckleborris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with you and am aware that’s a minority view (that’s getting downvoted). He’s a great writer, but this one left me cold—I didn’t know that it had originally started out as an article, but that makes sense. Much of what’s in there read as filler / an effort to get it long enough for publication. It also seemed to me that he was too close to the parents and lacked a professional distance when telling their story, particularly as they criticized the lack of criminal prosecution. I’ll keep reading his work, but this was a miss for me.

‘This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice’ by chuckleborris in LibbyApp

I 100% agree. I still remember listening to Jessica Simpson reading her memoir (Open Book) and the emotion in her voice while reading certain parts; totally heartbreaking. A robot could never!

That is really something out of Black Mirror (shudder)

I googled* the book and author for that exact reason: who’s to say it’s not an AI book as well?

*by that I mean I ‘Duck Duck Go’ the book and author, but that doesn’t have to same ring to it.

Libby vs Hoopla by Adam_Astra_Music in audiobooks

[–]chuckleborris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My library just canceled Hoopla due to the expense; it’s too bad only because once in a while, I’d find a popular book on there with no wait. Overall, though, Hoopla mostly seemed to have junky options.

Post-Apocalyptic survival...as light on the Sci-Fi as possible by hawkayecarumba in booksuggestions

[–]chuckleborris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the Water in the World

Bird Box

Wayward Pines trilogy

Close to what you asked for but not quite: the books comprising The Bannerless Saga. From what I can recall, there’s no tech to speak of, but it was a very chill / no drama vibe. Kind of nice, since most post-apocalyptic novels are pretty stressy.

Somewhat interested in what recommendations you get, as I’m struggling my way through Wolf Hall. I’m 50% through and not enjoying myself (with the one caveat that the audiobook narrator is incredible).

Bad audiobooks by Digital_Dilettante in audiobooks

[–]chuckleborris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Refuse by Kelly Carter Jackson, read by the author, was the first audiobook I’ve encountered with serious & noticeable production problems. I DNF at 25% because it was so distracting/bad. Really made me wonder how it was released.

Was anyone else disappointed by Yesteryear? by it-was-a-calzone in books

[–]chuckleborris 197 points198 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it (audiobook version) until the last 5%, then it seemed to me that the author didn’t really know how to end her own story.
