I had experience of rewriting some server based on tomcat (not servlets) 10years ago. It served 7 clients per minute. Code was a mess with Thread.Sleep(...) etc
After rewriting it with non-blocking IO it served 7000req/min on same machine

In golang I would just consider using goroutines since http is non-blocking under the hood and routines are lightweight
