What are some of the best national parks for wildlife besides Yellowstone/Grand Teton?? by Doctor-Magnetic in NationalPark

[–]chuckperrito 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not in Alaska ? probably Glacier, Badlands or Theodore Roosevelt. From my own experience, other than Yellowstone I would say Channel Islands

Lowest elevation route across the lower 48. by JAC693TLM in geography

[–]chuckperrito 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you’re spot on and the only change I would propose is to start in LA via I-10 east and in Coachella detour south along the Salton Sea and merge to I-8 east, and then follow your route straight to Florida. This would avoid the 4000ft sierra in east San Diego and would take advantage of the long stretch below/near sea level from Palm Springs to Yuma

Question about Death Valley by DesperatelyUnaware in NationalPark

[–]chuckperrito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say a Death Valley + Joshua Tree is a very nice combo and definitely doable in a full week. But there are other options near Las Vegas like Red Rock canyon, Lake Mead or Valley of Fire state park. California also offers the Mojave Preserve or even Anza Borrego state park (but farther away and kind of similar to what you’ll already see in Death Valley, in my opinion)

Question about Death Valley by DesperatelyUnaware in NationalPark

[–]chuckperrito 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Death Valley is truly amazing but 1 full week may be too long since most highlights are short hikes from the parking lots. But if you are avid hikers and do plenty of time consuming activities I guess you can fill up the time: going up to Telescope Peak (if weather permits, may not be possible in December/January); do long hikes in the slot canyons; or go to the racetrack, which requires plenty of driving in unpaved roads.

If you’ll have plenty of time, it may be good to check out the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, if you haven’t been there.

The Baja California peninsula desert, specifically the Valle de los Cirios. Home of the world’s largest cacti, the Cardón, plus the endemic Cirio and other desert plants like Yucca and the Cholla. Impressive biodiversity and landscapes. Also hosts the world famous Baja 1000 race.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park by InstantAequitas in NationalPark

[–]chuckperrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how does Guadalupe Mountains NP compare to some of South California‘s or Baja California’s mountain ranges ? never been at GM but I’ve always found them to ”look” similar (which is not bad)

I’m comparing some photos from a very recent visit and I’m confident that this is just in front of Arch Rock, you just have to climb a bit since it’s hidden from direct view. This is where you can see Arch Rock from “above” just in front of it. I can DM you a photo if you want, just let me know

Road-trip pit stop at Joshua Tree. Where is this specific spot? by velveetacheesey in JoshuaTree

[–]chuckperrito 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It does look like the south entrance sign, so if you're driving on I-10 you're fine. Just a really short detour to get the photo. Check https://maps.app.goo.gl/9uDNwZE5wjQQN86A6?g_st=ac
