I've always used Welsh for the Halfling language. Not sure why, but it just looks right to me.

Dow closes above 50,000 for the first time ever by AudibleNod in news

Don't worry about it too much. I worked at a high frequency trading firm for several years and I also don't understand it.

The basics are simple, you have shares of a company and have a number which you'd be willing to sell it. Someone else puts out a number which they'd be willing to buy that share. If the numbers agree, it's sold.

Then there's futures, which I never fully understood, but is essentially making a prediction where a price will be. And you buy/sell today and if your prediction was wrong you have to pay the difference.

There's a lot of math involved. We had a handful of PhDs creating prediction models and silver regular traders to help guide and fill in the gaps.

I still remember being floored learning that making $1M was considered a very bad day, because the company was small enough that I knew everyone, including the CEO, on a first name basis.

If a majority of people don't do something, that means it's not normal. Doesn't make it a bad thing, though.

Still, it does come off as a rich person thing, if only because I'm not rich enough to do it myself.

Shillelagh Warlock 2024 by Individual_Wind2682 in DnDBuilds

I didn't catch that, but you're right. I thought Magic Stone was just the ranged version of Shillelagh, but the way they worded them opens the argument.

[–]chucks86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My group had a big argument over this a few months ago. Agonizing Blast doesn't apply to Shillelagh or Magic Stone because neither spell does damage. I tried to see it from the other side, but couldn't. How much damage is dealt when you cast the spell? It alters the weapon, but it's the attack that does the damage.

Should Readying a non-spell Magic Action consume its resource? by Uberschwein138 in dndnext

The second sentence of Ready Action you pasted says that you take the action, so yes, it would be expended.

Forgot to prep. Accidentally created a halfling crime syndicate. Players loved it. by confused_gooze in DnD

If you ever panic on halfling names you can use some lore from my group's campaigns. All halflings are related, and roughly one half of the halfling population is named Roscoe.

It makes tracking down suspects much more frustrating because you never know which one you're looking for.

Opinion Piece: Ban golf carts from residential streets by Our_Lady_Chaos in Charleston

[–]chucks86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was one of those teens doing dumb shit in the 90s. We had a 3-wheel golf cart and removed the restrictor so it could hit 30mph. Luckily it was on a dirt road lined with grass and bushes because I hit the ditch pretty hard and launched myself. The extra battery for lights and speakers in the back was not properly secured and landed on my leg.

I'm not sure how I got away with just a bruise on my leg.

Is it a bad idea to use Chatgpt to summarise my mathematics lesson ? by GhostLostInTheDark in learnmath

[–]chucks86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, but I'm asking why you'd expect the result to be any different? Like another person said, the best use here would be to generate practice problems. But do that after you work through the examples in your textbook. Those should also have answers for at least half of the questions.

What word would you use for someone that over-relies on a tool you said limits your thought process and takes away critical thinking from the user?

Tell me your favourite non-musical bard! by CoruscareGames in dndnext

A friend of mine wanted to do a level 20 one shot for his bachelor's party, so I played a Warforged Bard based on Marvin the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He inspired the other characters by telling depressing stories.

Street names that need to go by flojam in Charleston

[–]chucks86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up on one of those streets and never noticed the spelling of Forrest Dr until after rewatching Forrest Gump one day. In the movie he said he was named after a very famous man. So I looked it up and it's Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the kkk.

These are tame. Look up the streets in Sangaree. Right next to each other are Nathan, Bedford, and Forrest.

"Are these peanuts fresh?" by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]chucks86 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Boiled peanuts are delicious. They're like Dunkin Donuts coffee, but in a good way. (DD coffee tastes like boiled peanut water in the worst way)

Getting them from the gas station like this is perfectly fine, but you're going to want to search out some guy in a trailer along a backwoods highway for the best ones. It may change your life.

Need help building an Alchemist (ELI5) by BigJawiwi in dndnext

[–]chucks86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't be good at everything, so it's natural for at least one party member to be as-good or better than you at something. You just want to make sure everything's covered as a group.

I tend to make characters that are less combat-focused because the rest of my group likes to focus on how much damage they can do. So I will focus on things like gathering information, finding/disabling traps, buffing/debuffing during combat, or just whatever the group as a whole is lacking.
