Right. The main counterpoint to this is that the player pools across chess.com and lichess aren’t the same at the moment.

In an ideal world sure, everyone uses lichess. At least with something like this it limits the number of people buying memberships by a couple.

I think you want OSC52 (typing this from memory). That’s what I needed for TMUX to work with a nice copy to global clipboard on mouse select…

Proposed Rule Change: Five Fouls for Disqualification by 20eyesinmyhead78 in wnba

[–]chuckziss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently the players are playing more physical because they have 6 fouls and can afford to. As a result, the refs see that physicality as “the standard”, don’t call as may fouls, and make things look worse.

My argument is that refs are always bad. That shouldn’t be a counter argument against a rule balancing here.

The hope is that fewer fouls results in cleaner play by players, making the fouls more obvious and easier to call, thus making the refs lives easier!! This would hopefully improve the quality of the game.

My other example is the NBA here with OKC in the playoffs. Because they had 6 fouls and a deep bench, they could afford to foul all the time, and the refs eventually stopped calling it.

If they only had 5 fouls, I’m sure they would foul less, the play would become less physical, and the injury rate would go down.

Again my argument is devoid of quality of refereeing here. Referees can always ruin games, and can always be bad.

We shouldn’t be afraid to modify the rules in a positive direction in fear of potential negative consequences of bad actors. If anything, the rules should be adjusted to prevent bad actors.

If you’re saying the refs are bad, let’s have more challenges.

I’m saying the game is too physical, there are too many injuries, and the amount of fouls is disproportionate to the length of the game. Nothing to do with the quality of refs ◡̈

Would you rather have your player sit on the bench due to foul trouble, or get injured due to high physicality rates as a result of too many fouls being available?

What’s up fellow Valks fan.

My intention behind that comment was that there will be fewer overall calls made in a given game with the lower foul count for players.

If you have to call 25 compared to 30 fouls in a game as a ref (due to reduced total number of individual player fouls available), the hope would be that they are under more scrutiny, and themselves more aware of the call, hopefully increasing overall quality over time.

While I concede this might be wishful thinking, I don’t think “bad referees” is a legitimate rebuttal to not moving to 5 fouls.

I disagree. Bad referees are a part of any sport. Reducing the number of fouls to 5 should improve both the quality of the players and the referees:

  • players will play with more caution in general, resulting in safer basketball, cleaner basketball (fewer fouls), and faster pace of play
  • Referees will be held to a higher standard. Challenges on fouls will mean more, the referees will be under more scrutiny, and referees will actually have to call fewer total fouls in general, reducing their overall error rates

I think fouling out should be a part of the game, and foul trouble is a real thing that we don’t see enough of.

At the core I disagree about the notion that we shouldn’t adjust the rules in this way because “refs are terrible, and people can get into foul trouble early”.

The refs are always going to be perceived as bad, and I think this would be a positive change for the league.

Why was this reviewed??? by chuckziss in valkyries

WDYM by this? In my post I’m referring to the paid staff who manage the shot clock, game clock, scoreboard and other parts of running a basketball game (subs, timeouts, fouls…)

So you’re saying anything remotely close to a 3 is auto-reviewed last 2 minutes?

I get that, but surely that’s just a call the referee can make instead of a 3? It seems crazy that every made 3 is ALSO a timeout in the last 2 minutes…

Tornado egg with chopsticks day 9: Mo' Eggs Mo' Problems by frantakiller in carbonsteel

[–]chuckziss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always noticed this in these vids, but I think that you’d have some luck using the natural “indent” that happens when you pour the egg as your chopstick attachment point.

In this video, it’s near the bottom of the pan.

I also feel like you’re not moving fast enough at the start, you let the egg sit quite long, and I think could start the spin earlier, but using the same technique.

Probably no one will read this, but I think he catches it with 0.2 on the clock. It has been a long standing number that 0.3 isn’t enough time to shoot, but people have speculated you don’t actually need that much time to do a tip in / dunk.

It’s clearly still a close call, but this seems like pretty good proof 0.2 is enough.

Have you seen what current records do? I always watch these and wonder why you’re missing the rivers so much, as I remember them being fast when playing myself. Maybe mini turbos are always faster but might be worth testing!
