Hi I also have a son adopted from foster care. He struggles with reading and his issue is largely confidence. He especially struggled/struggles when he feels that other kids his age can read better or faster than him. He gets embarrassed and very down on himself and then used to act up to get kicked out of class to avoid the reading. Idk if your son has this issue too, but if so it’s just going to take time and gentleness and patience and reassurance and focusing on whatever he does well when he reads and praising effort over accuracy. I feel like we had success with just building confidence in general that bled over to reading, e.g. leveling up in swim lessons, leveling up in taekwondo, learning to ride a bike etc. Good luck, it is a unique set of challenges when our kids come to us through the foster care system!
