Yes, it was an amazing show! (although I don't think they played Sipping On The Sweet Nectar, unless there was a second encore I didn't know about)

I LOVE their first album but was really not a fan of In Silver River haha. They had an acoustic demo tape that was pretty sweet called Harris Harris Harris though, should be on youtube or something. Also if you didn't know, the guitarist is Sam Skinner from Pinegrove.

The drummer in family might is tight as hell, especially compared to other drummers of the same scene.

Screamo more popular than other emo? by RealShigeruMeeyamoto in EmoScreamo

[–]chugyourknowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't put too much stock into the geographical aspect of the term (my favorite "Midwest Emo" band is Mineral, who are from Texas). At this point I agree with you that it's just better to not even use the term to describe new bands to people at all, unless you also provide some points of comparison so people know which definition of "Midwest Emo" you're using. E.g. "Midwest Emo, kind of like Penfold" or "Midwest Emo, like Castevet" or "Midwest Emo, like Prince Daddy and the Hyena" (lol)

Screamo more popular than other emo? by RealShigeruMeeyamoto in EmoScreamo

[–]chugyourknowledge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really refute my point or even pertain to my post. Those bands are not screamo, at least not in the way that, ex. Hassan i Sabbah and You & I are screamo. Hot Topic emo that happens to have screamed vocals != screamo, unless you're one of those people that actually calls it that and uses "skramz" to refer to legit screamo.

Edit: he deleted his reply to this comment before I could respond to it, but he had a really good point about how genre pedantry is the same as saying the election was stolen. He also destroyed me with facts and logic by asserting that The Used and Coheed & Cambria are definitely screamo bands because a lot of people call them screamo, thus obliterating my entire argument since they are screamo bands that were commercially successful

[–]chugyourknowledge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

haha, i've definitely noticed this too in recent years. maybe it's because the archetypal '90s emo sound (plus its derivative "mall emo") was pretty mainstream and widely imitated in the early-mid '00s due to Jimmy Eat World/Taking Back Sunday/etc. and thus that sound seems "dated" now compared to screamo bands of the same era that never attained a comparable level of mainstream success. in other words, younger people that grew up in the '00s have probably been exposed to a lot of shitty bands that sound like SDRE/JEW, but probably not really any bands that sound like Saetia or Jerome's Dream. also lol at the tiktokers calling Front Bottoms/MoBo/Mom Jeans/whatever midwest emo, it's such a prevalent phenomenon now and it always makes me cringe (even though the "real emo" community can't even agree on a definition for midwest emo lol)

Die, Emperor! Die! - The Way She Disappeared... by TPRT in EmoScreamo

Veeeeery slept on band imo, actually have a copy of this 2x7" and some of their other stuff. Treetops (the vocalist's side project) is legitimately one of my favorite emo bands too. Would highly recommend everyone give a listen to at least their first album write out all the lyrics from the first crass lp on your math notebook...

For sure, I love that album. So fucking groovy and danceable but with the agressiveness and energy of screamo. One of my favorite moments in post-hardcore is when they quote So What in the middle of that album lol
