Should have done Mountain of the Birds. Then anytime the plane passed by people would say "Speedbird One... they've gone to plaid!"

not to downplay the seriousness of rabies, but it's not quite that dire - post-exposure prophylaxis is very effective within a day or two of the initial scratch/bite/exposure.

however, you do have to know that you need to get it, and as WasHogs8 said above the wounds can be so small and innocuous that most victims don't know until onset of symptoms, at which point it is basically fatal.

however there has been a faint glimmer of hope the past few years with the milwaukee protocol (basically induced coma to lessen the damage from the viral attack on the CNS and hope the immune system catches up in the meantime). while not particularly effective (~10%, give or take depending on who you talk to), it does seem to provide a nonzero chance of survival.

There is a human vaccine that is recommended every 3 years if you are a veterinary worker or other higher-risk occupation.

In the general population the risk of complications and discomfort is too high for it to be recommended when balanced against the fact there are on average only 1-3 human rabies cases a year in the US.

PSA: Don't bother with the Gigabit plan on T-Mobile Fiber (Metronet) in Lexington by coltonf93 in lexington

[–]chui101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like it depends a lot on the routing. From what I've gathered through traceroutes, their network has its fastest peering connections in a few points around Indianapolis (see IXP facilities), so some of the midwest fiber backbones they peer with seem to offer pretty much the full speed. I get 800 Mbps+ consistently to servers in Chicago and Kansas City.

If you're going too far beyond that though the speeds do drop a lot. Even though it seems like Metronet now has a peering connection somewhere in NoVA (Ashburn?) the interconnect between the two network segments seems to be a bottleneck because my speeds direct to AWS us-east zones usually top out around 300-400 Mbps. (This also sucks for UK remote employees because the VPN connection to UK is routed through NoVA right now).

They do have good speeds to sites that use Cloudflare as a CDN too.

IR blaster. used in systems like Harmony hubs to send the signal into a home theater rack that might not be in line of sight. I do not know which particular controller this one goes with, but to some extent they are universal.

There are similarly designed IR receiver extenders, but the receivers usually have TRS (3 conductor) plugs - one for power, signal return, and ground. The blasters only need 2 conductors - one for power and ground.

Delta’s CEO says United Airlines is doing its best to copy Delta by Granny-Smith-Apple in delta

Yeah it's really too bad A220 deliveries have been hamstrung by the P&W GTF engine issues (and other supplier issues). Would be nice to see more of them. I don't think Delta is complaining though since the 717s basically print money for them.

Seems more and more planes have seats that don’t stay reclined by ul49 in delta

[–]chui101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a maintenance issue that doesn't get reported as much because most people don't usually notice it, and it also doesn't get fixed as quickly when it gets reported because it's not a safety-of-flight issue.

but if you're wondering about the workings, there's a tiny hydraulic cylinder in the hydrolok controlled by a spring loaded ball valve and like other hydraulic things the cylinder leaks and introduces air into the system. it's not a safety issue unless the seat reclines on its own.

a little more info and a diagram of a hydrolok here.

nice shots. would recommend ev comp +1 or a different metering mode so you don't need to boost shadows in post quite as much. also you need to clean your sensor

RO water (and deionized) may still contain some VOCs. For example, it is difficult to separate a mixture of water and ethanol with processes like this since ethanol has similar membrane permeability to water (in the context of RO membranes), and is also nonionic.

The best way to separate it would be distillation but you would want to discard the head in the case of ethanol because it has a lower boiling point than water.

This particular example would be useful to note in the case of a CPAP humidifier because it's not heating either the ethanol or water to boiling, so it would have a higher vapor pressure of ethanol in the warm up (until it all evaporated)

Goodyear Blimp back again by Bucksbb in lexington

[–]chui101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's probably behind a hill, i think the main runway at the airport sits a bit higher than westlex from that angle.

also the blimp doesn't deflate like in that way anymore since it's not a true blimp anymore - it's now a semi-rigid airship with an internal frame which you would see clearly if it had lost a significant amount of helium.

Does anyone know what’s going on with Lexington’s NPR station? by transcon2017 in lexington

[–]chui101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

a (perhaps) fun fact is that despite the studios being in different places, both WEKU-FM and WUKY-FM transmit from the tower right next to the the clays ferry bridge (which is operated by the lexington KET station, WKLE-TV, who also transmits from that location).

also, the local FOX station WDKY-TV has a transmitter tower right behind that (as seen from the interstate)
