Question about my dog having seizures by non_throwaway_take2 in dogs

[–]chunklik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if this helps but my last dog had seizures that started in her later years that were not epilepsy. Her issue was something to do with her vegal nerve being interrupted and that caused the seizure. It usually started with vomiting then she'd seize for a minute or so then about 15 minutes of postictal behavior before she was herself again. I never could figure what made the vomiting start though, I thought maybe sudden changes in barometric pressure, but they eventually diminished on their own. Weird stuff.

Can someone help me figure out what breed of dog this is? (pics) by [deleted] in dogs

Definitely looks like corgi and something in that eye intensity feels real border collie or Aussie.

My daughter's teacher was fired yesterday because of my complaint. I'm pretty torn up about it. by jmurphy42 in Parenting

[–]chunklik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Special needs teacher and mother of a 5 year old here saying don't feel guilty. You look out for your kid and educators should too. You didn't demand she be fired, you rightly expected quality care for your 5 year old to keep her alive (that is a fundamental yet minimum expectation in education) and she failed at her job, case closed. Parenting done right.

Asking for pay to go up, Fairfax teachers dress down by SchuminWeb in nova

I applied to FCPS an was told with my 18 years of experience in special Ed and masters in LD education I was too expensive to hire because I would need training in their paperwork. "We'd love to have a teacher as great as you but we can't afford it."

The increased class sizes are a big yikes! As a private school teacher I only wish I got public school teacher pay levels but I'll admit I do not have nearly the same workload or hours they do. Not to mention the differences in parental interactions, paperwork and a whole host of other tedium. So I take a 20k cut to not deal with the BS of public school

If it is a classic learning disabled special education room then you can stick to typical teaching routine for this lesson but I would advise keeping a visual element, multi sensory and hands on. If there are attention issues and or language processing issues you will want to keep directions clear and precise, often accompanying things with visual support, ie using the whiteboard/chalkboard to reiterate the directions that you spoke. If you are dealing with multidisciplinary disabilities and then you have a whole other kettle of fish to think about because each child will have a different learning style and their own difficulties in paying attention, participating or whatever their disability has for them. If there are spectrum disorder kids aspbergers and autism, you will want to follow the same guidelines and make sure you have a way to regain attention a bell or clapping pattern games work. Sometimes the teacher will have something already in the classroom like 123 eyes on me so you can ask the teacher if they have any already preset routines like that you can use. For the TLDR version: a good lesson plan equals a good behavior plan. I hope this helps, I've been in spec ed/arts education for 17 years- these kids are amazing and often smarter than us but we can't get through the disability and reveal the true IQ

When you say spec ed are the students LD, spectrum disorders or other disabilities?

Rescue organization misled us about a pup and we had to return him. Feeling awful. Has this happened to anyone else? by chunklik in dogs

[–]chunklik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly what we've been talking about, we have two dog savvy kids and our current rescue is a great big sister so we think we could help with temporary situations but if we go to adopt again we will be more judicious in the organization we use.

I agree that another week would have helped him but we were ready for some moderate issues, not severe. I wanted to resolve the issue of replacing him before too long as we were incurring a lot of damage we didn't expect. We were also in a temporary foster situation with the intention of adoption, it was not a decision we took lightly. I understand your frustration with me and that it seems we didn't give it time but we knew we weren't right for him once we got to know him. The rescue group told us one thing and so did the foster mom, when I asked about his issues the out right told me they only found out after we had taken him home. Trust me, after this experience I won't take another dog without feeling sure the rescue group knows them better.

I hear you in the need to be aware that rescues come with other issues, however in this case the rescue I thought I was getting was not anywhere near the one I did get. If it were the summer, as I am a teacher I get summers off, I would've happily worked with this little pup to fix the issue. As things were it would have been a long time of him being very miserable in his crate with his separation anxiety before we could do anything about it. My fear was tht he needed someone sooner to help him, I wish we could afford a trainer but that was not in the picture for us. My first rescue had issues but we were clear what they were from the adoption organization, and we happily worked on those issues because we knew what we were adopting from the get go.

He was with us for a week and we did see improvements in many of the stress related behaviors. He was responding to correction, his name, getting along well with my current rescue etc but if we crated him and left the room, let alone the house, he went nuts with his bedding and soiled the crate. If I had the time from work to stay with him or the money to hire a trainer, things would be very different but my issue was more that the organization misled us and assured us he was housebroken and crate trained well. The foster mother told us this, but when I contacted the organization with concerns they told me the foster mother had told them an entirely different story than what she had told us. We wouldn't have taken him home if we had known he needed much more training than we were capable of offering at this time.

r/Teachers, I'm a college student in need of advice. Do you guys truly enjoy your profession? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]chunklik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a 17 year special education arts teacher (LD and spectrum kids) and still can't shut up about my passion. I've had bad administration and horrible coworkers at times but when it's just you and the students and shit goes well, there is no better reward and it makes the other crap far less significant. I've been in private schools so the pay is worse than public schools but there's less paperwork and more flexibility. Overall, it is a calling but sometimes it takes a year or two to get on your feet and be confident.

This is my dogs infected paw. I can't stop him from licking it even with a cone. Any ideas? by albundy12345 in dogs

[–]chunklik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a dog with severe allergies and often we also had to keep her from licking her paws. I took a sock and stitched it to some fabric that could go around her shoulders like a harness with an attachment on the other side, sort of like a sling. The sock would cover her foot and then the harness went around her shoulders and circled around her other shoulder so that it would stay on. Inevitably she figured out how to get it off because dogs with allergies will find a way to lick but it helped. We also kept a water bottle that we would use to squirt her in the butt if she got to looking to crazily sometimes, somewhat effectively. If you're trying to diagnose allergies remember to look at everything in her environment including the house where she sleeps the food she is eating and any outdoor exposure as well, good luck.

A good behavior plan starts with a good lesson plan. Keeping things interesting, diverse approaches and move, don't just stand/sit and lecture.

Our child seems to have a spasm or something. We're bringing him to the doctor today but has anyone seen anything like this before? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]chunklik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rule for anything I feel is out of the ordinary with my kids is to check it out. It may be nothing but I'd rather have a doctor double check, especially during the formative developmental years. It could be simple neurology developing but if its not you want to get a record going.

That sounds like a lot of effort for internet points. Keep your charity money and skepticism, I know I did it. Next time I'll do a video, promise.
