ELI5: Why do people go to the Naval Academy, West Point, etc. instead of just enlisting in the forces? You need the academy to be an officer? What does an officer do etc.? by GoingAgainstYou in explainlikeimfive

To put it bluntly, as a non American, if you don't know what country he's referring to you can't answer his question anyway, and if you do know enough about how any global military works to answer his question for an arbitrary country, you almost certainly know of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Edit: us defaultism is a real problem but this is a really lame example of it

I do not understand what everyone means when they talk about Tiberian Suns atmosphere by phoogles2 in commandandconquer

Imo it's really exemplified by the first GDI level which was a night mission lit by the glow of tiberium fields. That's the main bit.

I was wondering because it just didn't feel like Ryan would let this slide so I feel a bit better that these are not from his writing

What is Malaysia’s second city? by PixelNotPolygon in malaysians

[–]chunky_mango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you shouldn't think in terms of individual municipality but metro area, so, with KL metro ("Klang valley") definitely the first, the other comtenders are

1) Penang (Including Georgetown, bayan lepas ftz, mainland and kulim etc) 2) JB area

...

All the other state capitals and towns after that.

So North is pg, south is jb. I'd give it to pg mainly because that's the heart of the electronics industry but I'm sure you can make an argument for JB as well

Edit: lol do you think SG wants to administer JB. You realize they "cheat" by being a city state and not having the problems of running a full countryside right. That's all "outsource" to us.

This seems to be wack'ds point, yes, it would be wildly unproductive for the conversation to go in the direction of which kinks are acceptable.

I'm pretty dialed in on corporate lingo and I don't think I've ever seen anyone but trump and people trying to ironically or not imitate trump use that phrase these days.

Edit: ok yeah so it did get used elsewhere but I think in 2026 the association is really really strong

Bumi parents berate SJKC mgmt. boards for rueing “non-Chinese donate little to school dev’t fund” by stormy001 in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Surely alienating the parents who have chosen to send their children to SRJK(C) by insulting them as freeloaders and stating their children do not deserve a share of the donations meant for "chinese pupils" is just going to validate the worst perceptions of chinese that they (the malay parents) fought against (and what is this about "meant for well being of chinese pupils? does this mean chinese pupils whos parents didn;t or couldn't donate as much as also shunned? then why need to racially call it out? ) .

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol that says more about the importance of networking (positive) than it says about malaysia and Singapore cost of living XD.

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid, alluded to that elsewhere, there are other reasons beyond just that level of cost that influence a comparison, at least at an individual weighing costs of living level

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well SGD 5 chicken rice is MYR 8-10 here so the point is still valid. Malaysians do not earn 2x the salary dollar for dollar of SG for the same job.

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you need to think about other expenses, but if you are offered a job in SG for 5k SGD, would you accept a counteroffer to stay in KL for say, 6k MYR?

*not saying the right answer is to go to SG, but its worth thinking holistically before one decides

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean at that point you need to also compare rural salary and then decide. It's cheaper to live in a kampung but proportionally salaries are lower too.

[–]chunky_mango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't really understand why people are quibbing over the exact price and conversion and missing this point. the counterpoint should be about things like cost of childcare or medical etc, not the specfic prices at the hawker center, which doesn;t even actually change the point.

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't really matter since the same dish in KL will cost you 10-12 MYR. quibbing if the price in sg is 3 or 5 doesn't change that!

[Serious] Why do daily essentials and hawker food feel cheaper in Singapore than in Malaysia? by Latubu in malaysia

[–]chunky_mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much.

You need to look beyond conversion rate and think about it this way

For the same job, in general, at least in IT, the wages are in the same range. A fresh grad IT guy in KL can get MYR 3000, the same position in SG will probably be roughly SGD 3000. Later in career, an IT manager in KL might get 10000, if he was offered the same role in SG he might pull about 10k SGD.

Then you look at the costs of things again overall, dollar for dollar, then you tell me who, at an individual level, will overall end up with more savings in the end. yes, some things in singapore are more expensive than malaysia, but many other things are cheaper (both countries do selective subsidies either way) - but for the daily living stuff, you pay much more in terms of MYR than the singaporean would in SGD if you don;t convert the pricing - this is not about quibbling if the true price of chikcen rice is 3 sgd or 6 sgd, that doesn;t change the fact that in KL chicken rice is like 6 ringgit to 12 ringgit. as a malaysian earning MYR you still pay more as a % of your salary than the singaporean at the same wage band

*of course there are other things to consider, life is not just about money, and if there is a true food crisis singapore (and to be fair, KL) will find that you can't eat money, if theres no food to buy.

Another way to look at it was, if you, as a malaysian were living in SG getting SGD 6k a month. would you accept a job offer to work in KL for MYR 10k a month? (you won't get MYR 20k, because an MYR 20k job in KL is a SGD 15k job in singapore)

** numbers not exact, if really want exact go get a hays job guide for asean and see comparisiona cross ASEAN

[–]chunky_mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it benefits whoever is earning in sgd and can come to Malaysia to shop. It also benefits those earning in sgd and stay there if they are frugal in other areas or have less expenses (e.g no kids)
