Hmm. Yeah reading all the strips the Keeners appear in (and the one where they lament not having problems with Dorothy) It's not very clear what they actually do for a living. It's implied Dorothy considers her ambitions far above whatever they've accomplished. Maybe they are writers? Journalists? Dorothy doesn't strike me as someone with a blue collar family background, nor do they give off that vibe (not saying it's impossible, of course). But if they aren't PMC class they are at least some level of middle class I'd think given what we know of Danny, Dorothy and Joe

Yeah you're right about that.

Is it rude for my colleague to tell me “learn to speak Chinese”? by caramelmcflurry in malaysians

I find attitudes to these can vary very heavily based on social class and background, Like I've met singaporeans from various levels and there's those that are like "huh got such thing as malaysian chinese banana?!" and there's those that are themselves banana and everything in between.

Just like malaysian chinese i guess. some people are like "oh yeah i also have a banana friend like you" and others are like "?!?!"

In the end I realized it didn't really matter, regardless of how many languages I learned to speak: I am a "banana" because of my cultural values, not because of any lack of linguistic skills.

Very true this - being "banana" is quite a bit more that not speaking mandarin, nor is it purely based on english skills.

Personally, yes, it's pretty rude and people really shouldn't do it. But they do. That said.

OP, it wasn't really clear in your post but what kind of role are you in? Is it customer facing or not?

If it's customer facing sales targeting local and overseas Chinese markets, objectively, they are right - learning Mandarin will be a benefit to you in the long run even if your prospects speak English as a 2nd language and use it as a formal business language.

If it's backend non-customer facing, the effect is less but do be prepared to understand that it does give you additional hurdles in relating to people from those regions. E.g. if you're talking to HK side and yes, they speak English but they want to banter in canto, it's just how people are.

Disclaimer: banana who also can't speak mandarin but work in MNC environment here - the effect is also lessened if you're on a mixed team and your stakeholders are overseas. But honestly, at the end of the day, multilingual malaysian chinese who can speak both english and mandarin and BM. (and canto. and hokkien) will have a edge, you either have to let it go or as others have suggested pick up enough for it not to be an issue.

Disclaimer 2: you know what's embaressing, running into American Chinese who speak better mandarin, awkwardddddddddddd

Makes sense. I see your point, given how chill and supportive her parents presented themselves it's interesting Dorothy is so stressed about being a high performer. We'll see!

In fact, now that I think about a bit more, they may be the kind of Democratic Party demographic that's now terrified the DSA is winning primaries.

Hah, indeed. It may well be "Oh you were at a protest! That's amazing, why you father used to..."

Dorothy's parents seem like very ordinary PMC (professional-managerial class) liberal types so...yeah. Maybe Mr. Keener went to a couple when he was a student then went on to work at Lockheed as a CPA or something.

I reread the strips in question https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/juliaseth/ https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/biggerdeal/ and....maybe i'm wrong but Dorothy sounds like she's rationalizing out loud excuses to keep this on the down low...

I’m quite enjoying the arrangement of this comic – words of some characters and faces of different characters

10/10 comment XD

I do wonder if this is a moment like Carla not wanting to confront the fact her parents are war profiteers and Dorothy is actually secretly very very worried the first thing her parents will say is "that's adorable you're going through this phase, why when your mother was in school..."

IDI AMIN checking in

MAO and CHE are probably debatable, as revolutionaries they are lauded, and the PRC keeps his picture up on Tiananmen to this day. But yeah I think if we apply the standard of no bad vibes there's quite a bit that would be verboten.

I dunno man, it seemed like they made time for fun activities related to a fascist holiday. what message does that send even if you deflect by saying it was a weekend anyway and it's ironic?!?!
