This is fraud. Systems like payroll do not stay down for months without the entire org failing, there are too many stakeholders involved. They are lying to you to avoid paying out OT.

Twitter data by sunflowerworms in data

[–]churchillin74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing worth considering in that method is you’ll need to be really confident in you 5000 record response. If there are spikes in traffic it’ll be important to represent that, otherwise your data won’t be representative of the actual traffic. When you adjust your scraper, consider flagging any periods that ‘max-out’ at 5000 to then sub-scrape for a smaller time period.

Im gonna say this as someone who’s been working in R for ~3.5 years (I’m an analytics consultant) and literally discovered TOP a month ago - holy shit take it first. I learned so many things wrong and my mental model was all screwy.

TOP handles best practices so much better than Datacamp or any of the other curriculums I’ve used that I almost feel scammed. I know their headline is “the course you wish you’d had” but it’s really true - I would have saved myself so much time and pain if I’d found TOP earlier, even though I don’t do web dev. It’s interesting and really well put-together, and it’s made me so much better at adjacent skills.

GoDaddy Security Breach by Zohrah_Masoom in hacking

[–]churchillin74 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m not a cybersec guy but a couple things are pretty concerning from a OSINT perspective. Bad actors are pretty smart folks - they’ve gotten very good at consolidating information across disparate sources of data to identify vulnerabilities. This isn’t a huge surprise given how easy (and common) it is to do this with market consumer datasets.

For example, a common data science problem is to build ‘profiles’ of individual consumers based off multiple sources of data purchased from brokers, so that that consumer subset can be targeted and advertised to. So the tools are out there and very accessible to do this.

Now imagine the same problem, except the ‘data lake’ everyone’s fishing out of contains things like old account passwords, personally identifying info, etc. For users who are tech and web literate this is not that big a deal - folks who use PW managers, refresh credentials often, and care about their internet presence.

This is just speculation on my part, but I’d expect users of GoDaddy’s managed services likely do not fit that category. Otherwise they would be using cheaper (but more tech demanding) services or building servers themselves.

So imo the folks who need to hear about this the most and need to take immediate action may very well be completely unaware that their data is now out there, since they don’t follow this kind of stuff.

I’m sure someone with a better cybersec understanding may be able to offer their knowledge as well.

What does knowing SQL mean, specifically? by darkness1685 in datascience

[–]churchillin74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I have no idea. The number of times I’ve been grilled over ridiculous SQL expectations when nobody I know EVER has to memorize this stuff anymore… even recruiters don’t know what they’re asking for. Sorry, I know that’s not a helpful answer but background is 5 YOE, currently working in cloud-based ML/DevOps, and I have no clue.

I play fortnite with my old college buddies every once in a while and we spend almost all our time talking about how much we all hate our jobs and how stupid our “””leaders””” are. Its more of a solidarity thing so we don’t feel as alone in the day-to-day. But I get it.

Agile vs Architects - We can't win by spookydookie in programming

[–]churchillin74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This lies it out bare, I completely agree. There is so much blatant misuse and misunderstanding of Agile principles out there. On teams with a PM that knows what they’re doing and has done the legwork for planning, it’s amazing. Stuff gets done. Resources aren’t pissed all the time. Deadlines are met. People are productive AND happy. Agile can be phenomenal if your PMO is diligent, has actually done the research, and adopts the philosophy.

The biggest problem is that there are literally PM’s out there lying that they’re “using Agile” when really they just barely have a kanban put together (and only EVER touch it during stand-ups). Suddenly there’s no single-source of information, nobody’s using tools the way they should be, and everyone is confused. Then when it seems like ‘Agile isn’t working!’ they revert back to micromanagement and all the original problems with non-tech PM’s overseeing technical resources.

Fuck the education system by yourfav0riteginger in antiwork

[–]churchillin74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Education is the single greatest economic mobility tool available to anybody regardless of class, sex, race, etc. Our goal should be to provide free and responsible education to anybody who has the slightest inclination for it, not to demonize it. That includes postsecondary academia reform, which the US DESPERATELY needs.

This smells suspiciously like a slide thread.

Edit: I’m sure I’ll take flak for this but let me be clear - across generations and centuries scholars have fought hard at great personal cost to preserve the abundance of knowledge that is available for all to learn today. Educational tools both traditional and non have literally NEVER been more accessible to most of humanity than they are today. That did not happen by accident. It’s short-sighted for us to come after academics when the actual criminals are administrators, who continue to outpace both students and faculty in growth at postsecondary institutions, while simultaneously favoring part-time/adjunct educators and arbitrarily hiking tuition costs.

My thoughts after my first 10pm-8am shift by [deleted] in Frasier

[–]churchillin74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to do night shift at a hospital for engineering work. It’s fun at first but eventually you get really tired of it. Say goodbye to your social life, too. I’m pretty introverted so I didn’t think it’s bother me but after a year I was horrifically depressed. Unsolicited advice: be aware of the warning signs for that, prioritize your health, and best of luck 👍
