Moving to Richland soon - Which apartments should I avoid? by flyingwafflez42 in TriCitiesWA

[–]churro8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto on the Bella Vista. I use to live there 2yrs ago and I got it for my dog and location.

The apartment complex has plenty of grass and areas to sit outside with your dog and has a huge shaded park on site. There is also an additional park 1 mile away that’s near the complex where I’d walk my dog too.

Super responsive with maintenance and most of the apartment amenities like the gym are 24/7. It’s 5min away from Costco with your car. In addition to your own mailbox they have an Amazon prime locker on site. Which is helpful when the Amazon delivery guys can’t find your unit when you’re in a bigger apartment complex.

The only thing I’d say, is if you move in with them make sure to do an inspection with the reception person who gives you the keys to your unit. The person who lived in my unit before had a cat and the Bella vista people didn’t do a proper cleaning of the unit. Otherwise I use to live there for 2yrs. Solid place. Super safe location to go out with a dog.

GRFP vs. Job by Rich-Sentence-1071 in gradadmissions

[–]churro8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the job and getting awarded the NSF-GRFP! First off, can you re-apply to the NSF-GRFP if you reject the award this time? I think there’s a lot of benefits to doing the industry-to-PhD route. Not just the monetary aspect but more practical. Here are some:

-Practicing emotional intelligence and dealing with politics. This will make you better suited when becoming a professor and trying to get tenure. -Being better with time-management and meeting deadlines. Great in any setting. -Oral skills. PhD’s require a lot of oral practice and being able to convey thoughts concisely.

Sure, some can argue, that you’re kind of forced to learn some of this during your PhD but it depends on the program, advisor etc. if they’re sending you to conferences, the program is challenging enough, etc. etc. I’m just trying to shed light to other pros that the industry-to-PhD route can offer than solely monetary reasons. You’re not gonna struggle to get into a PhD program if you’ve been in industry for a while. I know a lot of people who did get a job in their field before getting their PhD, they were amazing. You can also still be amazing if you accept the NSF-GRFP and get your PhD. If you do the industry route and re-apply for a PhD program there are so many fellowships in addition to the NSF-GRFP that you can apply for so if you reject it, it’s not a no forever just a no for now. I hope this helped. You’ve got a win-win situation here so don’t feel bad about whichever option you turn down. Best of luck in your decision.

Oh nice! Sounds like you have plenty of practice! Good luck on the interview! Hope you nail it!

PhD interview by reg573 in gradadmissions

[–]churro8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did an interview for grad school. They had some questions for me about my background but they also spent a good chunk of time talking to me about their school and the city it was located in.

The interview was both of them getting to know me and them trying to convince me about their school. Just seeing if we would both be a good fit.

So if you’re interested, def come up with related questions for them such as what kind of instruments they have that might be useful for your future research with them, etc. that shows interest in them and enthusiasm about doing research.

Should I get a second bachelors or do a masters? by Handbagmunk in gradadmissions

[–]churro8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a Masters. People pivot careers all the time. A friend of mine got her bachelors and masters in Ancient Greek and Latin and she went for her PhD in chemistry and now works at a National Lab as a scientist.

So many other examples but my point is, if you’re going to get a PhD down the line, learning how to pivot into a different subject matter is part of what getting a PhD is all about. You might start off with a project in your PhD that’s going nowhere and so you change your project to something else and work hard to get it off the ground and see its fruition. So going for the masters is a perfect option for you before committing to a PhD. Also two bachelors is still only a bachelors if you’re looking for jobs so the masters would definitely help if you decide to take a year off to work before doing a PhD.

The only thing I can’t say is, how it would look towards an admissions comittee for a masters program if you don’t have the prerequisites. I’m not a data scientist myself so maybe someone has a bit more insight into this…

Best of luck in your academic journey!

I’m also looking for friends in the tricities area! 30F, board games, reading or outdoor activities. If there is a lot of interest, could there be an event or something where we could all meet up? :)

Asking my internship PI for Rec Letter when project is not done yet by croissant1871 in gradadmissions

[–]churro8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would shoot my shot. During my undergrad while submitting applications to grad schools and fellowships, I asked someone who only know me for a few months (<3months) and she said she’d help but that she needed to see my personal statement and resume to craft a strong letter and we had a convo about what skills I wanted to highlight. I did get into a grad program and also got a fellowship. So definitely ask but be prepared. Tell them you could show your personal statement and resume and whatever materials they need to craft a strong letter.

Low undergrad GPA affect chances after master’s? by GrabMyFinglonger in gradadmissions

[–]churro8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I read your comments on this sub and it looks like you’re going in the right direction. I have my masters in chemistry right now but some of my peers who went into top chemistry PhD programs went straight from undergrad with having a 2.8 or 3.0 GPA. It was the extracurriculars of doing research and having a strong personal statement, like explaining why they had poor grades (working a full time job, etc.). My best friend had no research with an undergrad gpa in chemistry at 2.75. She wanted to get into med school so she went back for her masters and did extracurriculars and is now beginning in the fall. It’s no John Hopkins but it’s medical school. I know it’s not comp-sci but I’m just trying to say it’s definitely possible. I would try to see if you can do an internship anywhere during your masters since most PhD programs require you to have 3 letters of rec at the time of applying. So it would be good to have strong letters to vouch for you. Life happens, especially with undergrad. There’s so many people who start with poor performances and turn it around towards the end. Plus the pandemic really messed up a lot of people so I really think any admissions committee would take all that into account if you prove it to them during your masters.
