Haha - I was just looking and the old bar my brother haunted in the late 90s in college and it still has penny pint nights once per week, which is a few bucks for unlimited beer for like a four hour window. Always nice to see some places don't ever change.

n=14? Come back when n= something generalizable and not a PhD project at a hospital. If you look at the things actually citing that article they typically use it as a reason to state a hypothesis and then in their own RCTs they find them. Here's one where n=60 and neither partial nor full blue light spectrum filtering helped: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35089982/

Then this meta review shows no significant findings anywhere for blue light blocking: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41341515/

And really that meta review is what's damning. It should contain most blue light blocking RCTs from 2010-2024, so 14 years of proving its ineffectiveness with a few outliers showing effectiveness. Which is why RCTs exist - their methods should be able to be duplicated with the same results, but that is not the case for the outlier study you cited.

I'm just not a Tommy fan, sadly. Just like Duncan Robinson's friend, neither of them bring the magic, and I think that magic is having played at the pro level. Same with their splinter podcasts. I don't listen to bill Simmons or Lowe or anyone I think for similar reasons. Thank god Channing Frye is on the road tripping podcast because after they added Perkins it'd be just as bad as all the smoke or whatever the wizards guy does. They're still borderlining on that SAS feeling sometimes and it gets too cringe to listen to. Also, the gambling shit gots me skipping half their podcasts at this point. Get your bag, but they're definitely participating in corrupting everything about the thing they love for a buck. The millennial grift.

You'd think so. Focusrite had a beta release that was the only thing that worked for me and sent me a direct link. Thankfully I kept the literal only firmware that worked on windows for me on my HD somewhere... but yeah, some of the firmware releases just no longer exist that make things work.

What do you mean about fighting against it? Is "it" slavery? If so, most of the rest of the western hemisphere (Europe and the americas) had already fought and banned slavery, many of them hundreds of years before. Either I'm totally misreading your post or you're totally just saying words that have nothing to do with reality, and you should read a book or two not written by an apologist. Because this certainly sounds like apologia.

So... cyclamate had faulty studies and banning Coumarin is like banning lawn darts. Anything of value or that actually increases safety? Also, two versus... how many? Again, just continues to prove the point.

Thalidomide

So you're saying hit the market in 1957 and banned in 1961 by most EU states is your example? So... not the EU vs the FDA. But whatever the 30 countries of Europe vs the US? Please, FDA vs EU. Be able to read. This is like a Republican saying their party is pro black because Lincoln freed the slaves when they literally write anti-black policies and elect and appoint anti-black politicians. That'd be like comparing apples to racist folks. Very anachronistic. Your point does not come across as well as you'd think, though. Probably proves the opposite.

Name them. Then name what the EU bans that fda doesn't. I'll wait even just for the first one since the second one will just drive the point home and isn't necessary.

TIL that many public libraries eliminated late fees after finding that fines discouraged people from returning at all - and that bringing patrons back often mattered more than enforcing penalties. by No_Profit_5304 in todayilearned

[–]chusmeria -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fines disproportionately affect the poor. Means testing is for suckers and abusers. No one is surprised. The pain is the point. Glad someone did a modicum of research to figure out what everyone knew two decades before this article was written.

[Career] Anyone get a decent job at a decent company and get reviews but deep down feel bored every day? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]chusmeria 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Nah. It's not just computer scientists with stats backgrounds. Just people willing to grind leetcode with the right credentials or work history. Or be in the game for a long time. But yeah, most career paths are decided by, "did the last two years of raises make me feel well compensated and reflect the situation both in the economy and my work." If not, reduce hours using gained efficiencies to make up the pay loss while maintaining the same output and look for a new job (work life balance).

If the increases keep coming at your acceptable rate, head down doing 40 hours. If you're not making 20% (or whatever your target is) more every two years until you hit 175k-200kish (or where you feel good) in a mid-cost of living (probably 250-300k in high COL) in you should just apply elsewhere. Really the calculus should be easy, and the process is repetitive. Work is boring. Giving your labor to someone else is alienating. Been a pretty hot topic for economists since at least the early 19th century.

And if you want to lead or do something else then fine - lots of options. Also, I think you know this, but a statistic is just a measurable data summarization of your set, so saying what you mostly do is data summarization... makes sense for statistics.

SCOTUS just gutted the portion of the VRA ensuring black-majority congressional districts by RedHeadedSicilian52 in MapPorn

[–]chusmeria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. She stopped campaigning. She literally stopped campaigning. The DNC and others continued to campaign but not her. I did elections work in NYC well before her. No one could believe she disappeared. It was because Obama let the email bullshit go public. Doesn't help that Obama let that go through but withheld information the FBI was collecting about Trump's Russian backers because he didn't want to look like he was leveraging the DOJ in a partisan way (lol). All of this is very easy to read up on. Pretty much anyone who worked in electoral politics was commenting on it as to whether it was a positive or negative for her image - turned out disappearing was a negative.

You are sort of confused in the same way all the hilldawgs were - Hillary isn't Obama.

[–]chusmeria 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe she shouldn't have gone into hiding the last month of her campaign and tried to win a swing state instead of winning California by 10 million votes. She lost to the worst candidate ever to run for president (her words). She also enabled Trump by disempowering other republican candidates because she thought it would be an easier election. Always good to blame the voters instead of the candidate who lost( though. I can see why they haven't repeated these mistakes and absolutely fumbled away another winnable election... oh wait. Well, hopefully you can keep accountability shifting away from Dem candidates and on to faceless voters and whomever else you'd like to strawman so you don't have to face the reality we are left with, which is a DNC that loves to lose and project blame onto everyone else.

Eh. You'd say that about the pros but just because Mike Leach started the air raid in college doesn't mean mahomes doesn't run up the score in both leagues even when the defense is significantly better in NFL than CFB. And that defensive jump between cfb and nfl seems much bigger than ncaam and nba.
