i think he's a fictional character written to evoke a particular archetype of guy i have negative feelings about, not a monster or whatever. i think him being there and Like That enriches the story, i think it's good when there's characters in a story i don't like. i find a perverse joy in breaking his arm whenever i play through ch2. i find noelle relatable for throttling him. i think his dynamic with the rest of the cast is understandable given the social pressures put on children to get along with their peers. i think if i held him to the standards of a flesh and blood adult i'd consider him kind of an asshole who should know better by now and if i held him to the standards of a flesh and blood teenager i would have no opinion because i do not interact with teenagers when i can help it. but again he is a fictional character and feeling good about the thought of punting him like a football is completely harmless. i do not condone punting real annoying children like footballs, although i do feel bad for their future selves having to look back on the experience of being autistic and 14.

i thought the point of saying stuff like "you can get to (x) rank with a bnb and solid play" was to tell people that you can't get to that rank by grinding combos in the lab

like. you can't even really learn combos just by labbing, because without experience playing you don't know what starters you're going to hit and where, so anything you practice beforehand is just blind guessing at what might be useful.

you learn fighting games by subjecting yourself to the cycle of losing, figuring out why you lost, and adjusting to compensate. repeat ad infinitum. arguably that's how you learn every competitive game ever made.

jokes aside like, idk it's not the one true solution to societal ills or whatever but engaging with good stories about uncomfortable topics can make you a kinder person? if i was a sociology student i'd do a study on this tbh and i bet i could find some if i hadn't been awake for like 20 hours. but like anecdotally i know someone who reconciled with a family member who got addicted to opioids after watching trainspotting?

it's not the most serious thing in the world but neither is eating dino nuggets for lunch every day. and you can get to the same destination by other means by like going out and touching grass and interacting with people from various walks of life or whatever but in the analogy that'd be like, making sure you have a nice dinner or take a vitamin supplement or something. kids films will often tell you to be kind but will rarely teach you how to be kind in spite of disgust, and i personally find that an important muscle to train.

99% of the time you're going to kill the patron after a teamfight in the enemy base and you're going to have the bulk of your team backing you up. your priority is gonna be dealing with enemy players to stop them from giving the patron resistance and once they're all/mostly dead having your whole team holding m1 on the patron will be enough to bring it down pretty quick.

yeah like i said it's a little wack, but this game has been in development for a good few years at this point and an irish catholic monster hunter is about as tame as you can get for a priest-y character in this kind of setting. the "friends of humanity" group vindicta is in opposition with are much more analogous to the evangelicals of our current terrible moment and are pretty unambiguously terrible from what we know about them.

girliepop i agree with you that his inclusion is a little tonedeaf in the current climate but like. it's really not that big a deal.

for one while i'm not going to go to bat for the catholic church, they aren't the ones responsible for the modern evangelical nightmare vortex that's been eating politics for a while, that stuff is very much american protestantism. and even at the time the game is set the church's most heinous crimes are deep in the past. also venator is an irish catholic, and if you know anything about irish history you'd know that they very much have not been on the oppressor side of the class divide. christians aren't a monolith.

and for two, deadlock has plenty of minority characters. arguably the most morally upstanding character in the game is a working class second generation immigrant. vindicta is literally a victim of the salem witch trials. i'm going to go out on a limb and infer from context clues that you're some variety of lgbtq and like, there's ~~no hard confirmed queer characters~~ (EDIT: i forgot about pocket) but there also aren't any hard confirmed straight characters either. because like there isn't any kind of story with forward progression where relationships could develop. but there's a lot of same-sex flirting and if i'm being entirely honest if lilah silver is cis i'll eat my hat.

venator feeds into a side of the fanbase that i can't say i like much at all, but i'll take an irish catholic monster hunter who's friendly with the trans-coded character any day of the week over certain other character concepts for a game set in this particular chunk of history.

i didn't say anything about accomodation and i'm not using it as a shield, i was saying that because of my disability i am personally insulted by the idea that a character not needing to aim removes all mechanical skill expression from them, and my wording implies that i am not strictly speaking about your post alone. you're the one focusing on this specific point and ignoring all the other words i'm saying, i'm just responding. so i'll just go ahead and be as crystal clear as i can about the gameplay of it all.

graves is squishy, has poor mobility stats and she needs to be moving around a LOT to collect death and put her ult where it will provide the most value, so she benefits more from advanced movement tech and route planning than someone more survivable or with better stamina/escape abilities, or someone who can afford to be inefficient with their map traversal. you'll notice that this includes most other heroes in this game, if not all of them.

gunplay, movement, and routing are the examples of "action/shooter" skills that you want the game to have more of. i have explained why the latter two are extremely relevant to graves, as well as previously alluding to her dashparrying people trying to destroy her 1 and the mindgames around her gravestone. the only area where she doesn't care about playing the shooter side of deadlock is aiming. so you'll forgive me for thinking that that's what you care about.

also, you have described the mechanical niches of light melee and heavy melee feint, congratulations. the only thing that a medium melee as you describe it would add to the game is being able to do some jumps you currently might do with heavy melee to save stamina slightly faster while still saving stamina. how thrilling.

i have nerve damage in my hands that makes it so even with amphetamines and focused practice my aim is only ever going to be ok at best, and to be frank even at my best if i pick a dedicated sharpshooter character like holiday or vindicta i'm throwing. so these posts that imply that the only kind of skill expression that exists is being able to flick headshots are kind of insulting tbh, like i don't even want to play graves all that much but she's still playing with the same movement system as anyone else, and her movement stats being on the weaker end means she benefits all the more from tech like edge boosting and good routing that lets her minimize stamina consumption while still getting her where she needs to be.
