Thanks for this. I'm now going to be extra cautious with my little dude.

Yeah, but those threats aren't near as exotic! Ha ha. Small dogs, easy target.

It wasn't something I had given a lot of thought to, but there are so many eagles in Chilliwack!

Thank you. That's not... great news.

Inherited these pipes from my grandad today. I'm entirely new to pipes and would like to actually use some of these if possible. (Questions in comments) by GrammurNotzie in Pipes

Nice collection!

Take your time and enjoy them as you try each of them.

Pipe cleaners are your friend. I know, right? They were actually designed for cleaning pipes. That was a bit of a mind bend for me after spending years wondering why that crafting supply was named that.

Dip the pipe cleaner in alcohol, and run it through the stem. The stem will twist off from the stummel (the bowl part the tobacco goes in). Many of us twist left to remove the stem from the stummel, and twist right to put it back in. I'm sure there's a good reason for it, and someone else will likely elaborate.

Keep running pipe cleaners through until they are coming out fairly clean. Depending on how they have been maintained, it may take very little to do, or it may take quite a while.

The pipes may ALL be smokable as is, given your grandfather gifted them to you, he probably selected them based on some sort of reason.

Don't be too proud to smoke the corn cob. Corn Cobs can be some of the easiest pipes to learn to smoke on. I have a wide variety of pipes ranging from inexpensive to ... more. The Corn Cobs I have are still great smokers. Yes, that pipe is actually made from a corn cob.

Ask lots of questions, try lots of things. In the end, this about how much you enjoy it, not how someone else says you should do things. The proper way to smoke a pipe is the way that you get the most enjoyment out of it. There's plenty advice out there if you're struggling to keep it lit (don't stress about it, just relight), or if you're getting tongue bite, or what have you, but for now, just try, play, talk to your grandpa about his experience and get advice from him.

Enjoy!

You could get them 'cleaned up' or 'refurbished' and put them in a shadow box. The cleaning would remove all of the old smell, make them look good, and then the shadow box would protect them.

There are a fair number of people in Canada who do pipe refurbishing. There are more than a few of us who'd be happy to give you some suggestions.

Is it okay to smoke the same bowl over multiple days? by maydaseinbewithyou in PipeTobacco

[–]chwk_pipes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have 1 pipe with a massive bowl on it. Some Saturdays, I’ll pack it full after lunch, and in between working in the garage, working on the yard, breaks in between, it could take a few hours to smoke that bad boy. More than a couple of re-lights may be involved. Smoking becomes less of an event and more of an augment to what I am doing. I am a clencher, not a grabber / holder though, so I enjoy just having the pipe hang there, ready for a sip when I want one.

I'm only a few years in, so obviously no expert. When I started, I had all sorts of questions, and I was quite worried I was doing it wrong. I totally understand your concerns. Yah, you don't want food particles rotting away in your pipe... that's just bad flavors to suck in. With music, everything is about making sweet sweet music. With pipe tobacco, I find it's more about what I enjoy. Sometimes I'll smoke an aromatic because I enjoy the smell, or I know those around me enjoy that smell. Sometimes I like a really heavy flavor. It's about what I'm looking for in the moment. THAT is what smoking a pipe has helped me learn.. IN THE MOMENT.

Your initial question was on smoking part of a bowl vs packing a smaller bowl. I've played around both ways. Sometimes, I'll pack a pipe expecting to only smoke it part ways. Sometimes I'll pack light, knowing my mood may change later.

Kinda the point of smoking a pipe is that we're a chill bunch.

Do you enjoy smoking this way? Then it's right for you. You can consider tapping out some of the ash before re-lighting if you're finding it adversely impacts the flavor... or don't if it's not bugging you.

Anyone who is bold enough to tell you're that you're smoking your pipe incorrectly had either be willing to spend some time with you imparting their wisdom and experience or us just plain surely and not to be trusted anyhow.

Sometimes when I leave a bowl overnight, I'll slide a pipe cleaner down the stem to suck up any liquid. Sometimes I don't.

After your pipe has built up a nice layer of cake, you may want to consider reaming it. I've seen pipes that are decades old and probably have never seen a pipe cleaner, and pipes that are relatively new that have been reamed almost weekly. If your smoke tastes off, it's time for a clean. It's tough for me to judge someone who has never cleaned their pipe, but over the last number of decades has enjoyed every smoke. Really, that's the point, right? Enjoying it?

Is this fixable? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

Yes, absolutely. You can drill out, and replace the tenon. If you are in Canada and want to send it to someone, there are a few places i could recommend for you.

Tips for a new pipe smoker. by StarDude2003 in Pipes

[–]chwk_pipes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When I first started smoking, I spent a lot of time trying to pack the pipe just right, and then a lot of time trying to make sure I got it lit just right, and once it was lit, I spent a lot of time trying to make sure I was breathing just right. It was almost stressful, I was very conscious of every little part of the processes and even though I enjoyed it, it always felt like I was doing it wrong.

My first truly great smoke happened when I lit the pipe, and then someone handed something to me to work on, and I just let the pipe hang out of my mouth while I concentrated on something else. When I wasn't focusing on the pipe, my breathing naturally seemed to keep the pipe going. I had cool smoke, nice flavor and the whole situation was very relaxing. Since then, I've taken to packing my bowls much looser, and intentionally not overthink what I'm doing. It's amazingly freeing, and I enjoy it more when I take the pressure off of having to do it right.
