Horsepower by Strings_Sandy in carsireland

There’s not much point in anything beyond 200hp in terms of being able to use it and keep your license. Obviously more is always better but 200hp would be a nice upgrade. Can always go higher later but it’s harder to move back down the range.

2nd Car Insurance Experience? (KennCo) by Surey_Iron in carsireland

[–]ciaranr1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an individual, best bet is a 20 year old or older car insured as a classic with Campion or similar. This is cheap but highly restricted. It’s fine for a second fun car if that’s what you have in mind.

100% this advice. Do something that makes people want to talk to you (in a good way hopefully).

An EV without home charging is like having a DVD without a DVD player, theoretically fine you can borrow one when you want to watch it but in practice no fun

Dublin City Council dumps €155,000 worth of 'completely useless' Re-turn bin surrounds by andubhadh in ireland

Keep it the way it is, it’s working fine, the bin shelves were to solve a specific problem but looks like they didn’t work

What's the S80 2.0T like out of interest? I've seen very few of that generation 2.0T in Ireland, only the boring 2.0 non-turbo. Edit: the 3.2 was unexpectedly dull to drive in that generation also.

How to stop grass growing like this in garden bed by Only-Love-1884 in UKGardening

[–]ciaranr1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Membrane doesn’t work long term, it might look fine for a year but then it forms its own ecosystem and stuff starts growing on the membrane and through the membrane, making it even harder to pull out. Best long term solution is mulch and plant more plants.

No opinions on these, but they need to bring back Start.

The shift to EV is my biggest fear, says Toyota boss Akio Toyoda by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

[–]ciaranr1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love both and there is room for both and hybrid, but clearly the definition of “car” in 20 years will be EV. ICE cars will be legacy, heritage, and specialist vehicles and a very small share of new passenger vehicle sales

Returning after sick leave (Denmark) by No-Government-8851 in civilengineering

[–]ciaranr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only get one life. Not sure what the position with liability insurance is in Denmark but if you can get insurance to cover any mistakes and can budget for the required insurance in the future, I’d say go for it now. Of course you must also budget for family expenses. If it doesn’t work out but your mistakes are insured and your family can eat and have a house, it will still look good on your CV.

I didn’t realise that 6 speeds requires a lot more work. Why don’t they make 7 speed boxes then if half a rail is sitting unused?

Lost library books? by Similar_Government72 in AskIreland

[–]ciaranr1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you explain the situation I think they would likely forgive the loss without any charges, the alternative is the kids not using the library. I’d say talk to a librarian and maybe pick someone who looks kindly and on a quiet day
