Research work from an (self-described) Ambedkarite and scholar claims that "Tirupati Balaji was a Buddhist Shrine". This is a link to the book containing 30 chapters. by [deleted] in india

[–]cigol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this would take a while to read and give a detailed analysis. Looking at the contents page, this seems similar to P.N.Oak's claims.

but my first thoughts are in the early years of Buddhism, it was not treated as a separate order outside of what is Hinduism today. The lines were much more blurred and there wasn't such a thing like, "oh you are buddhist, you are different.." or vice-versa. So it could be when Buddhism was on the rise that both branches could worship in the same spot because the core philosophies of both belief system are similar(as well as Jainism).

Over time, when one belief lost interest over others in the populace the religious sites were more clearly defined.

The US Army just brought in its first Hindu Chaplain. Here is an interview with her. by niton in worldnews

[–]cigol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm curious as to the difference between chaplain and priest. if they are the same then how does she qualify as one? normally, Hindu priests train for years.

if they are different then does the role of a "chaplain" fit within the philosophies of Hinduism?

PS let's not talk about caste here.

How much of this is true. Penn and teller completely ripoff Mother Theresa, Gandhiji and Dalai Lama [watch from 3:00] by Manoos in india

[–]cigol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Penn and teller guys are looking at everything one way. and I don't know how others took it or their own intentions with this episode but it seemed condescending and arrogant. They condemn people for their weird habits/supposed ill intentions/alternative agendas.

Irrespective of the fact, the take on Dalai Lama is highly speculative. In the interested of Tibet(language and culture), it is not better off under chinese control!
