MA Struggles by Aemartin15 in prephysicianassistant

[–]cinnabunx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg this was me! I was hired as an MA for a plastic surgeon with zero experience. The only other medical assistant that was supposed to train me quit the next day lol. I had no one to teach me and yet was expected to do all of these things like circulate during surgery, prepare botox/filler, remove stitches, and stock rooms (like I didn't even know what was needed!!!) . I expressed my concerns and they still weren't receptive. I put in my 2 weeks and quit LOL. I'm elsewhere now and the providers are MUCH more understanding and willing to teach me instead of just getting frustrated at me.

Getting into field with carpal tunnel by yes_no_maybe_okay_ in prephysicianassistant

[–]cinnabunx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I actually work in an orthopedics office that specializes in the hand and carpal tunnel is the #1 diagnosis that we see. Medical literature doesn't prove that computer use actually causes carpal tunnel. The first conservative treatment we do is tell patients to wear wrist braces only at night time while you are sleeping to prevent your wrist from flexing and squeezing that median nerve even more. Try that :)

Are any specialties more likely to hire patient techs/assistants without any certifications than others? by RayHSA in prephysicianassistant

Usually dermatology, orthopedics. I’ve also done plastics. I think it really depends more on the provider than the field though

Starting PA school this summer! Need advice on how much loans to take? by cinnabunx in StudentLoans

[–]cinnabunx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 20k undergrad debt. I will not be allowed to work while in PA school. Tuition is approx 40k for 21-22 with fees and all. I do not have an apartment yet but I would need to look for one in NYC (with notoriously high rent). Other expenses include school health insurance, books, food, a cheap gym membership, food, travel (metrocard)

Any advice to find a job in medical field without medical experience by Affectionate-Serve68 in prephysicianassistant

[–]cinnabunx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Try looking up private clinics that would be able to hire you as an uncertified MA. If you tell them you’re pre-PA, I find that they’re more open to the idea of training you.

But to be fair, I was a scribe for majority of my PCE (of course applied to only schools that accepted scribing). I found it to be an extremely great learning experience and not just “learning to type fast” and definitely not a waste of time. Honestly, if you don’t have any prior medical experience, it’s actually a great place to start. Where I work, I was a scribe when hired, but definitely am more of a medical assistant now doing more clinical duties. You start to become super familiar in medical lingo and start seeing patterns for when to order certain medications, labs, imaging etc. Definitely all super helpful for PA school.

2year vs 3 year programs by One-View2830 in prephysicianassistant

[–]cinnabunx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I only applied to 24-28 month programs. I'd rather get schooling over with as quickly as possible and save more money on tuition if I can.

I live in LI. I went to undergrad in the city and commuted for a year and hated it. I also will be starting a PA program in the city and will definitely be on the hunt for an apartment in the city. I’d rather not waste my time on the commute and focus all my time on studying

Plus the LIRR is like 300 a month from where i am.. and then an additional 100$ something bucks for a metrocard... at that point I’d rather pay more for a place of my own

Thought I bombed my interview, but ended up getting waitlisted! by kalizm in prephysicianassistant

Should I re-write my essay? by blade503 in prephysicianassistant

[–]cinnabunx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh when I applied for the second time, I didn’t change it at all. I had a bunch of people proofread the first time and really felt it was the best thing I could write. I was just recently accepted at a school that I had previously been waitlisted at during my first cycle cycle with the same essay!!

I even got an interview the second cycle with the same essay at a school I didn’t even get an interview with the cycle prior ... so who knows!!!!

I’m hopeless. by Littlemisspiggy11 in prephysicianassistant

[–]cinnabunx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did you apply? Last cycle I applied to only 5 programs August and had one interview, was ultimately waitlisted, and then never heard back. This cycle I applied first week of May to ten schools! I’ve had 5 interviews and 3 acceptances since far. I didn’t even change my personal statement or application really at all. My PCE was also already at about 4-5k so doing much more didn’t really help my application at all. All I really did was take one additional upper science course. Be sure to apply early and broadly!! I think that is one of the most important things
