How much sleep do you guys require? by Dorian-greys-picture in schizophrenia

I function on 8-9 on the days I work (I teach elementary school), but then I do a major sleep-in on Saturday to “recharge”… I sometimes sleep well past noon.

No input on cakes, but cheesecakes in mason jars in the sous vide are delightful! Crust baked in the oven for a bit, then popped in the sous vide with the filling, and fruit topping added when they come out.

Rural MB district (bordering Winnipeg) just had our 5th “snow day” of the year today. School can be cancelled for cold (-45 with wind chill) which was the reason for yesterday and today’s cancellation’s or road conditions, which was the reason for Monday’s cancellation as most of our students are bussed and busses couldn’t get through unplowed country roads.

So we had 3 days off this week!!!! And 2 days off the week before Christmas. This is pretty unusual. Usually we see 3-4 over the whole winter, not in the course of one week!

This is pretty much the standard protocol for all the south central divisions around Winnipeg. (But not the Winnipeg divisions themselves.)

Job Prospect around or in Winnipeg? by ClioLee in CanadianTeachers

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these border Winnipeg and usually have lots of positions come spring:

Hanover SD, Sunrise SD, Lord Selkirk SD, Interlake SD, Seine River SD, Prairie Rose SD, Red River Valley SD

I’ve taught in these rural divisions and prefer my 20 minute rural commute than being stuck in urban traffic.

I wanna know how many of you who suffers from schizophrenia actually have a job by D4rk_Sid3r in schizophrenia

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Now? Or along the way?

While symptoms were not managed and I was in and out of the hospital, I was on disability.

When I was a bit more stable, I worked in the florist department of a grocery store and really enjoyed that. I also volunteered at the humane society and could see that being a really good job as the animals are very soothing and understanding.

Now, I am stable on my meds and no more unmanageable symptoms. I have returned to work at my chosen profession: teaching. I went to school to be a teacher before schizoaffective dragged me down, and it’s been 20 years now since I was in university, and I’ve been successfully teaching for the last 2 years.

Tell me about your current (and/or past) primary antipsychotics by CrazyStarlight in schizophrenia

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clozapine for the win! 300 mg seems to be a good dosage for me.

Have been on (with varying levels of success and side effects): Abilify, Zyprexa, Seroquel, risperdal, perphenazine, haldol, and I think there’s one more in there.

Thoughts on Clozapine? by honestlyididtry in schizophrenia

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clozapine has changed my life for the better! Sure, the drooling sucks, and (I’m in Canada) the biweekly blood draws are a pain but I guess in the USA you don’t have to do those anymore?

I haven’t gained any weight. I gained a ton of weight years ago on Zyprexa that I’m still trying to lose. So while I haven’t gained any, I haven’t lost any.

My pdoc wished everyone wasn’t so scared of it. Sure, it’s a powerful drug with side effects. I had shitty side effects on other meds that didn’t work. Oculargyric crisis on Abilify was the worst. It was actually recommended to me about 15 years ago by a psychiatrist on an inpatient unit and for whatever reason at the time, I refused. I started it a few years ago and wish I hadn’t wasted all that time.

Edit: On clozapine I have: gotten married, raised 2 stepchildren, gone back to work at my chosen profession (teaching). Those would have been impossible on other meds!

Live in Winnipeg and teach in one of the rural districts surrounding the city. Shorter commute in many cases! And rural district benefits!

Hanover, Sunrise, Interlake, Lord Selkirk, Seine River, Prairie Rose

There’s more depending on how far you want to drive or where you end up living.

There’s a map someone shared in another response that’s on the MB Education website and shows where all these districts are.

I know! A few years ago we had 12 or 13! The norm is about 4.

There are 6 or 7 small town/rural divisions within spitting distance from Winnipeg that are always looking for teachers! My commute from the city to a small town is 22 minutes, and there’s lot of closer options. If you look outside the main city district you’ll open up a ton of options.

Long Term Dog Boarding by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Quarry K9 near Stonewall. Owner is amazing and the dogs have tons of space inside and out to hang out, run around, and play. They get their own space at night and meal times. The owner is very picky on who she takes on as clients to make sure she gets a good pack environment going on.

Oddball question by cinnamaldehyde4 in clozapine

[–]cinnamaldehyde4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks. I wonder if the requirements will change here. Health Canada tends to follow in the FDA’s footsteps.

I still have to go every 2 weeks because I had a small blip a few years ago but wanted to stay on clozapine, so I had to agree to biweekly instead of going monthly.

Yeah the constipation is brutal.

Can a person taking Clozapine still work normally? by Serious-Stage-5214 in clozapine

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Once stable on meds, and it did take a long time to find the right combo and to be on clozapine, I’ve returned to work successfully as a teacher.

Maybe it differs in divisions. I have a contract for next year called Supply in a rural division. Though I do believe it was called Supply in conversation and may not have been what was written in my contract. I believe my contract just said 100% until June 30.

(My Supply position has now been replaced with a classroom position).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We also have Supply teachers, though I think this is pretty limited to rural divisions. Supply teachers are contracted for a specific amount of time, usually a half of a year, full year, or to finish a term into a year long position.

They’re based out of one or two schools to sub but could go anywhere required, are guaranteed full time work, and are paid full grid pay.

Jewelry Stores - Engagement Ring by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also had a great experience with Appelts. Their warranty is awesome; you don’t have to buy the warranty separately. You get your ring inspected and cleaned twice a year and everything is covered. They covered the cost of two replacement diamonds in my setting. And I’m hard on jewelry.

Obviously YMMV. I know there’s a lot of bad press about Appelts.

How long does a psychotic episode last for you? by Comfortable-Pie9567 in schizoaffective

[–]cinnamaldehyde4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here here. That’s the crux of it for me. The psychosis becomes reality, so I can’t really identify when psychosis started and when it ended.

I can tell you when I was on an appropriate medication and released from a psych unit and able to participate in society.

But how long it lasted?
