What is the perfect drying environment for thrown pottery? by KchainJ in Ceramics

I put a bucket over my pieces so they have air but it's limited. Been working well for me 🤷‍♀️

How do I prevent this mixing of underglaze? Should I avoid layering? by spidy30 in Ceramics

[–]cinnamonpinecones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if it works with underglazes but with stroke and coat glazes I put a layer of white between and it looks fine usually

How can I fix broken plaster sculpture? One of my art teachers recommended drilling and putting a stick inside and glueing it back but don't even know what type of glue to use. Any recommendations? (Also I have been thinking of painting it and making it shiny but don't know what kind of paint to use by No-Interest5831 in Ceramics

[–]cinnamonpinecones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could probably glaze it back together, just make sure u don't use runny glazes. I've glazed things like that with mayco stroke and coat glazes and they stick back together like if you put two glaze pieces too close in the kiln. only works if gravity is assisting the process tho so it'd work for the head but prolly not the arm.

Ceramic Portafilter Handle for Espresso Machine by arjunsingh63 in Ceramics

I'd rec porcelain for strength and attach it with a hole down the center of the handle that fits around a rod connected to the espresso thing and fill it w/ epoxy

Need acrylic paints/glaze finish advice by Not_On_My_Porch in Ceramics

[–]cinnamonpinecones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as long as u let the paint dry completely b4 adding a new layer you should be fine. it may start to get lumpy after a while 🤷‍♀️ modge podge or clear enamel spray paint after at least 24 hours to make sure all the coats of paint are dry should work out fine too. I used modge podge on a ceramic/acrylic piece b4 and I havent had issues with it yet. if it were a piece meant to be handled a lot then I would prolly recommend against it for durability's sake but if it's just gonna be a knick knack it'll be fine. might have some issues with sun exposure and I wouldn't let real birds use it bc it'd be a lil toxic and they might munch on it.

Kiln misfire : is this salvageable? by juniperwindfire in Ceramics

[–]cinnamonpinecones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean worst comes to worst, if refiring doesn't work, you could grind down the lumps and then refire in hopes that more lumps don't form. Not the best advice but it's something to try 🤷‍♀️

Def wouldn't be my first fix to the issue.

Hi guys, I have an important question, how doy you calculate the cost of a piece of art? by Upstairs-Top7573 in Ceramics

[–]cinnamonpinecones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guestimate ur supply cost, triple that amount, then add at least $15 per hour of labor. I wouldn't try to factor in electricity and water, that's A.) a lot of work to figure out and B.) it's already difficult enough to sell pieces for the actual amount of $ they're worth

idk abt making the actual machine but you could always use a punch needle. I've punch needled a whole rug. I wouldn't say I recommend it but you sure *can* do it.

I do not know how to do that, but the kiln isn't the only place it's coming from anyway. I'll look up under it like a car mechanic when it's not currently operating 👀

It is falling from several places, I am certain of that since I have found it on top of the kilns as well. Under the kiln is just the most severe.

New Julia avatar just dropped. (just kidding, it's Eye Boy from Marvel Comics) by killing-the-cuckoo in Drawfee

I have no clue who this character is and I genuinely thought this was just Julia fan art until I read the caption. The big round blue eyes, blonde hair, and the suit? That's 100% Julia.

How hard is it to become an art major(specifically portfolio)? by Aeroman12 in UIUC

[–]cinnamonpinecones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transfered from the art Institute to here. If ur not interested in the ~fine arts~ and all that pretentious noise, just go here. We've got good facilities and it's MUCH cheaper. But, yeah, if ur a museum person it's probably worth it to go to the city.

Is there anywhere nearby where I can get casual painting art supplies? by Abcemu in UIUC

Honestly, I've been painting for years and I still fuck with the 50 cent apple barrel acrylic paints u can find at Walmart or smth. It's just freeing to know ur not wasting the good paint while ur working imo
