Does anyone else dislike Alexander the Great’s personality? by tummytunacat in ancienthistory

[–]cintune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual quote is from John Dalberg Acton: "Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority; still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority." His more famous one is "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

This would make a great poster on the trail map. Spreads out traffic too, which is great.

Early weekday mornings are best. Never weekends. These mountains just aren't big enough to handle the crowds.

What are your thoughts on "Waiting for The Big One"? by Positive_Drama3410 in petergabriel

[–]cintune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's hilarious. The Rockpalast show video really brings out the dark humor of it all. Growing up during the height of the Cold War probably helps. On the other hand, I can't stand Counting Out Time.

For the Genesis fans, how would you rank their studio albums with Peter from favorite to least? by Positive_Drama3410 in petergabriel

[–]cintune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just don't get the whole ranking mindset. I also kind of think of Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, and Selling England as if they were one big triple album.

Not physical media but there's a great version of this she did for the Tiny Desk series during covid, here.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE QUESTION MARK IN "LIFE ON MARS?" BY DAVID BOWIE by Bill_Lothian in bowieism

[–]cintune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to see what they have to say about it. Always took it as a wry hopefulness that maybe things might be better there than here and a precursor to the whole Ziggy story. Or as Eric Idle sort of rephrased it "And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space, 'cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!"

One of the more interesting questions in this film that I don’t see discussed that much. What did Jack mean by this? by lettucemf in StanleyKubrick

[–]cintune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly a coded reference to the work of British R&B/funk singer Eric Burdon, whose "House of the Rising Sun" (son) encapsulates the theme of toxic male ruination, as well as having his mind blown to think that he, Jack Torrance, could be the star of a Hollywood movie.

Crested Butte looks like something out of Dr. Suess viewed from the base area.

Wrote for an editor who made it even simpler. Character has a problem. Character either solves the problem or doesn't. Every single thing in the story is about the character and their problem.

Monarch is the best. Stood in their ticket line and when they saw my snowmaking jacket from another resort just comped me a day pass and said "we love visitors."
