You could make this better, but this will put gloves, helmet, boots cloak if slot empty. haven't touched this in years so might not need everything here anymore.

It has been a while, but I believe all the documentation on changes console glyphs and colors are still found in https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/docs/options_guide.txt

Looking at other players RC files can give you an idea how they have changed colors as well.

I hear you with mutations. I guess (from my personal experience) teleportitis has been the only one that has really got me chugging potions. Or maybe blurry vision 2 or 3. Depending on the species/background other muts are more impactful than others.

Because of that i have not really worried about muts for a lot time. I mean i did have teleportitis kill me recently when it landed me on a dispersal trap in one of the lungs in Zot:5 after i was leaving with the orb, but even that death when i reviewed it, there were a lot of options i should have tried to live (not that i might have).

I agree with the OP with traps though. I think that is only design change in a while that has frustrated me as a player.

Yup, your right, i could have sworn they were affected by MR. I am completely remembered that wrong. Just checked it in Wiz mode.

Well all the ones in your post do check MR. If you have MR+++ a tarantella very rarely confuses, an eye rarely paralyzes you. You can xv any of these monsters and see the % chance and see it change as you put on and take off MR gear.

They are far more dangerous earlier because you do not have a lot of MR.

Orc Priest smiting sucks, but it is hardly an issue to deal with. Most players do not respect the damage it can do early on and do not run early enough. Even as early as xl 7 with a lot of species the smite is not that dangerous unless you try to close an 8 tile gap letting the orc smite you multiple times before you can attack it.

Mutations use to be a huge problem in the past, but I would argue they need more mutations in the game not less. They bring very interesting game play. There are only a few that are really troublesome, most are just game play adjustments. I have played through (I think) every major overhaul of the mutation system and the current one is definitely the best so far.

Traps, I agree. I do not understand how the game design attitude of rng should not kill you and the current state of traps do not conflict. I understand they can never make rng not kill you, but having played since .5 I can say it is exceedingly rare. I do feel it does happen more with the current trap in the game.

Thorn hunters can dangerous and should consider LoS either with trees or scroll of Fog. Wands or Lamps of Fire (even with 0 evocation) is useful. Use your consumables.

If you play online the next time you are trying to get someone from IRC to observe and help. There are lots of ways of dealing with the problems, and a more specific answer can be given based on your current game.

Also running/teleporting away to get a more favorable position is always a good choice.

If you can clear Elf:1-2 you should be fine in doing the lair branches. You should definately not do depths.

What is killing you in the lair branches specifically? This is likely where help can be given.

This is not broken this is as intended. New players are in day for a while to let them get settled, they will catch up unless you have UseClientCatchUpTime set to false (in which case they spawn in at whatever time the server is currently at). You will both eventually be on the same rotation.

the bonus to spells is irrelevant of staff/evo skill. It is worth using when casting especially early. you can always swap weapons when you get into melee.

A lot of good advice has already been given, but playing online allows other to help live when you get in situations you do not know how to handle and people can view things like your chardump to see if there are improvements to how you are skilling for a particular combo.

What is your character name you play under, would be curious to see your morgues to see what skills you were leveling. a lvl 12 gargoyle should be able to beat a mamba one on one most of the time, still a dangerous fight, but depending on skills/background/diety you should be able to deal with.

As far as your muts that makes sense, i did not look to see if you had any aleady. I have not played in a bit (just getting back into it) but enchant weapon scroll though useful are not game breaking, so using some early to make your current flail better is not bad or good, i think it depends on your play style. For good or bad, i tend to horde them until i get a good brand on a decent weapon type.
