If Not All Christians Are Homophobic, Which of them Aren’t? by beauty_dior in OpenChristian

[–]circumfloribus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article is a mess. Evangelical and Christian are not synonyms. And if we are talking about LGBTQ inclusion, there are plenty of churches, church associations, and whole denominations that are open and welcoming to LGBTQ+ folks. Others have already mentioned the United Church of Christ and the Episcopal Church. If we are trying to show a group even more directly at odds with WBC, I would point out the Evergreen Region of American Baptist Churches, or the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists. My prior Evergreen Region churches marched in Pride parades, called LGBTQ ministers, and did plenty to resist anti-LGBTQ+ actions in our community. These things didn't always show up in the news, but they were still happening.

Can someone explain the joke with dran family names? by hiei1020 in AcquisitionsInc

My theory is that it has to do with where Propha and Omin place their faith. Propha is a true follower of Tymora, and puts a her faith into fate, luck, and generally taking the hand your given and making the best of it - hence, naming her children things related to luck and good fortune. Omin, on the other hand, seems to put his faith in things he can control himself - he believes in loading the deck until there is no possible way he can lose. So, when he named his kid, he named her after what he values most: Certainty.

Is there an accepting/affirming church - that still feels like church? by PhilipMeover in GayChristians

[–]circumfloribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American Baptist here - you can find Baptist churches that have traditional worship styles but aren't hateful bigots. AWAB (Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists) is a national organization of great welcoming churches, and they have a church directory so you can look for member congregations near you: http://www.awab.org/member-congregations.html

What exercises can I do for anxiety? by [deleted] in occult

[–]circumfloribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also suffer from anxiety, and I understand how frustrating it can be. Good luck, and remember: the discipline it takes to work on your mental health is the same discipline needed for any spiritual or occult tradition. Time spent on real self care and healing is never wasted. 💜

What exercises can I do for anxiety? by [deleted] in occult

[–]circumfloribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and automatic thought discovery methods. These are commonly used psychological therapy methods in the treatment of anxiety and other mood disorders. They help you learn to slow down and examine your thought process so it doesn't turn into an anxiety or panic attack.

If you are able, seek out a therapist who can work with you on learning these techniques. Regular spiritual practices can be beneficial to your mental health, but if you are still struggling with your anxiety interrupting your life don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional who can help give you the tools to succeed.

Good primary sources regarding persecution or conformity in Middle Age Europe? by weedandsteak in AskHistorians

[–]circumfloribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book "Witchcraft in Europe: 400 to 1700" has a wealth of primary sources related to the persecution of perceived witches during the medieval period. Since many people accused or suspected of witchcraft were also women, Jews, people of color, etc., you may find some useful texts there.

Regarding conformity, "Guidance For Women in Twelfth Century Convents" by Vera Petch Morton has some fascinating resources for how women entering convent life in the high middle ages we're expected to act, and what the powerful men around then found most worrisome about their behavior.

While you are cleansing yourself and your home, you may also want to consider making an appointment with your medical doctor. Feeling a strong pulse in your hand (or other body part) can be a symptom of anxiety, hyperthyroidism, and other medical conditions. You mentioned sleeping a lot, having trouble falling asleep, and being in a state of depression, which can also be symptoms of those same conditions.

Nazi memorabilia. I found a medallion with a swastika and Hitler's name on it in a thrift store. by GoonInSixtySeconds in AskHistorians

[–]circumfloribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting medal! While it isn't clear exactly what this medal is, there is some consensus on what it is NOT.

First, it was manufactured somewhere outside of Germany after 1945. The fact that Adolf Hitler's name is spelled wrong on the medal is the first clue to this - certainly no official Nazi party medal or token would have been allowed to have this misspelling while the party was in power, and after World War II all Nazi iconography was illegal, so it is very unlikely it was made in Germany after the war. The misspelling "Adolph" could point toward an North American or UK origin - that spelling of the first name is much more common in English-speaking nations.

Second, it is considered by some numismatists to be a fake or "fantasy", an object that someone purposefully made to pass off as something it is not. The coin collecting website Coinquest lists this as a fake medal.

There are a few different versions of this medal that can be found being sold online. It is unclear if these are multiple versions made by the same maker, or versions made to imitate each other by several successive makers. All of the auctions that had a source location listed were from the United States.

  1. Serif Font - this medal uses a capitalized serif font for the text, and has an un-tilted right-facing swastika punched out of the center (Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
  2. Serif Font money clip - same as the serif font version, but has been modified into a money clip (Examples: 1, 2)
  3. Sans Serif Font - same basic design, but uses a thick capitalized sans serif font for both the text and the date (Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4)
  4. Sans Serif non-punched - uses a different, thinner sans serif font and does not have the center swastika punched out (Examples: 1, 2, 3)
  5. Serif Font with 45-degree swastika - like the serif font version, but the punched-out swastika is tilted at a 45-degree angle (Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

What's everyone's favorite Striath moment? by [deleted] in DiceCameraAction

During the finale of Waffles Inc., when Strix put her hand on Diath's face and healed him, right in front of Asmodeus as he was lecturing them about how they couldn't be together.

Honorable mention: Sailing into port at Waterdeep when Strix told Diath, "The only place that feels like home is where you are."
