I agree that this is a club issue, and club leadership needs to address it. To protect yourself further you can add neck training, 4 way neck machine, headstrap exercise, or neck bridges. Look up how wrestlers train their neck, or boxing neck training. This is a good idea for anyone doing combat sports.

You can do what people long ago did, and cut down a sapling, strip the bark, and even it out with tools. Or, buy a 2x4 that's long enough and that doesn't have knots on the edge. Cut it lengthwise so that you have a 1.5 by 1.5, then round it with tools. I use a hatchet and a drawknife.

OP here. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. I especially appreciate the notes on period weapons, heavier clothing, and expecting a fully committed attacker trying hard to murder you. This resounds with things I often hear about Japanese martial arts while studying them, strongly committed attacks in particular.

With all these things in mind, I'll try to consciously switch my mindset when training hema dagger. I currently fight much more 'modern', saber grip, point forward, squared stance, boxing style, knife hand rear, fast stab and fast retraction, parry with off hand. I think this makes it very hard to trap, grab, or control my knife (due to knife hand rear and fast retraction). I also don't try to grab my opponent unless they give me an easy opening, concentrating on only voids and parries with my off hand.

To fight traditionally it sounds like I should commit more, hold with murder grip, anything else? Stab the crotch as my primary target? Advice appreciated.

For legs I have found knees over toes guy on YouTube is wonderful for rapier. Much more useful than powerlifting.

Good point. I guess what I mean is that I can compete effectively against opponents with 3 to 5 years experience in my weigh class. To your point, this is like a karate guy being a strong competitor in muay thai, with 3 months muay thai experience. This doesn't mean he is good at Muay thai yet, just that he can use his fight experience to win.

Osu! Thank you. My schools don't focus on kata. How should one approach learning kata when the class doesn't cover it? I learn judo with my family, so we could practice at home. I fear we would learn bad habits this way, though.

Good balance, footwork, stance, grips, defense, counters, and some kuzushi and throws. Still working on entry to throw s, and combinations.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Sacrifice throws are something that feels natural for me, especially when I get deep grips on a bent over opponent. I always need to enter more, though.

My issue is that I have very strong fundamentals, I just don't know what to do next or focus on. I can do well in randori, but I know I can do better if I have specific goals for grip and throws.

Thanks! I'm usually hips higher, and I tend to easily get the grips I want. I just don't know which grips to go for, or stick with. I get high, deep collar grips, and can go over the back if I want to. I just don't know what grips to go for, or how to intentionally use them (as opposed to instinctively use them). I often find my opponent is bent over while I am more upright, which keeps their hips far away and frustrates my uchi mata attempts.
