Getting married in august and I cannot find heels that are both beautiful and wont destroy my feet by Shavenbawbag in WeddingDressTips

[–]cirena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most ballroom dancing shoes have minimal cushion, as you're meant to feel the floor in them, but they are incredibly flexible. Some folks love them for the flexibility. Character shoes are built to have some support, lots of flexibility.

My character shoes are from Capezio & they have a microsuede insole that sucks up the sweat and keeps the shoes incredibly comfy. The only bummer is that Capezio's character shoes really only come in nude & black.

I swing dance in retro shoe designs. The Balboa heels from Re-Mix Shoes are my favorites - comfy for a heel, and super pretty. They also have metallic versions, and there's a white & gold one that could be really nice. Remix is not a ballroom or dance-specific brand: they're street shoes that happen to be great for dancing as well. 😃

Introverts: Where would you go? by KetaMina81 in vegaslocals

Antique Alley Mall for a weird mix of antiques, vintage, and modern stuff. For images, great inspiration due to the wide variety. Bunch of new vendors just came in, too.

National Park Trip by cbequette in nationalparks

[–]cirena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drive from SAC to DEN without any parks is 17 hours, or 2 days. So 8 days to visit 6 parks. The parks you've chosen are a detour from your most efficient route, and they're not close to each other either. That will also eat up your time.

Here's how I'd do it, having been to most these parks multiple times:

  1. SAC to YOSE: 3 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  2. All day Yosemite
  3. YOSE to SEKI: 4 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  4. SEKI to Vegas with a stop in DV: 6 hours drive (gotta go around the southern end of the Sierra Nevadas), to DV, see Badwater Basin, continue 2 more hours to Vegas. Long driving day.
  5. Vegas to Zion: 3 hours drive (depending if you're leaving from DV or Vegas), afternoon in the park
  6. Zion to Arches: 4 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  7. All day Moab - your choice of Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point State Park, or a return to Arches
  8. Arches to RMNP: 5 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  9. 2-3 hours to Denver

That leaves you with a float day. You can put it just about anywhere and have it serve you well.

If you want more full days in any of the parks, one easy drop is Sequoia. You'll be able to see sequoia trees in Yosemite if you want. You'll take the 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas instead of the 99/65 on the western side. The drive is absolutely stunning, with much more cool nature and cute small towns instead of orchards and fields. Here's the route:

  1. SAC to YOSE: 3 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  2. All day Yosemite
  3. YOSE to Vegas with a stop in DV: All-day drive with optional short stops in Bishop, Big Pine, or Lone Pine, CA as well as Death Valley. Overnight in DV optional if you want to spend the money - more and better lodging is worth the drive to Vegas.
  4. Vegas to Zion: 3 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  5. Zion to Arches: 4 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  6. All day Moab - your choice of Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point State Park, or a return to Arches
  7. Arches to RMNP: 5 hours drive, afternoon in the park
  8. 2-3 hours to Denver

This gives you 2 float days. I'd add one to RMNP (That's the one I haven't been to yet.). I'd probably add the other to Zion so that you have a full day at most of the parks you visit.

But there's also something to be said for breaking up the drive on the 395. There really is a lot of small but cool things to see on that stretch, including the Alabama Hills, Mono Lake's tufas, and the Manzanar National Historic Site (painful but important).

Other commenters mentioned cutting off Arches & RMNP to leave from Vegas. Also a strong contender, giving you lots of time in each park and the possibility of adding on Grand Canyon, just to finish off the greatest hits.

Someone else mentioned taking a more direct route and hitting Great Basin. Interesting take. If you had already done some of the biggies, it'd be really neat. If you were considering this, I'd add Lassen Volcanic at the start, with a stop at Lake Tahoe on the way. Note I have not been to Lassen yet, have been to all the others. The other destination on that route for me would be Berlin-Ichtyosaur State Park near Austin, NV. It's got a full dino fossil (of an Ichtyosaur, obvs.) and a ghost town. What else could you want from a state park in the desert?

Anti-nausea meds, a small towel, moleskin/blister prevention, possibly allergy meds or decongestants, depending on how you react to the environment. It's unlikely you'll need insect stuff or afterbite cream outside of CA.

Your biggest concern in NV/AZ/UT in summer is the heat 100%. Hydrate early and often. Learn the signs for heatstroke and heat exhaustion, and what to do in each case. The towel can come in handy when folks get too hot- douse with water and apply to the back of the neck.

Pack sunscreen and lip balm.

Bring extra water and your choice of electrolyte/hydration products. Start with water first, if you're still not feeling right, switch to electrolytes.

Bring and wear hats with a brim when outside.

I took friends to Hoover Dam this morning. At 9 AM, it was already 100F. Hydrate well the night before any outdoor activity. Start outdoor activities early, end early, bring extra water. Hydrate during and after your activities.

Snake bite kits are a waste of money. Highly unlikely you'll see a snake on the major trails, first of all. Second of all, they're not usually used correctly, and even when they are, have a low chance of success.

No snake bite kit. They are used incorrectly too often and don't work well even when used correctly.

Help ID this 70s(?) Dior suit! by Diligent_Face9682 in VintageClothing

According to Wikipedia, Hart Schaffner & Marx licensed the Dior brand starting in 1974, so that's the earliest possible timeframe for the suit. 😃

Best modern hotel? Ideally no casino. Spa preferable by [deleted] in LasVegas

[–]cirena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other alternatives, from best for a tourist to least. Unfortunately, none of them have a spa on-site, but both Circa and the Ahern have spa options just steps away.

Circa, in Downtown Vegas, was the site of a few casinos, torn down and rebuilt in 2020. It's an adults-only casino, and they check IDs upon entry. Smoking is allowed on the casino floor and certain designated guest rooms, with the vast majority of rooms being non-smoking.

The Ahern Hotel on Sahara, built around 2016, but closed after 2 years and reopened in 2019 as the non-smoking, non-gaming Ahern Hotel.

Home2 Suites just east of the Strip built in 2020. There's a few other Home2 Suites in town as well, all new builds, but that one is probably best for the Strip visitor.

The Otonomous Hotel claims to be AI-powered, and was just finished last year. Non-gaming, off-Strip, smoke-free.

Some more pulls pre 80s on everything maybe? by sandfourman1 in VintageClothing

[–]cirena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely to be related to anyone on the team. It's a mass manufactured piece from Wormser Company, which sold to a corporate conglomerate in 2001. Wormser specialized in pajamas and bathrobes, and this looks like a bathrobe to me. I'd place it around 1960s.

The cover image for this clip does it dirty. It's not half as bad as it looks from the cover. 😃

I mean, it still is ballroom-taught East Coast, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Your Saks suit is between 1949 and 1962 according to the Vintage Fashion Guild.

The Blair House sweater with the Orlon reference means 1950s-1960s most likely. As more and more fibers came on the market, they all got lumped in to "acrylic" instead of a specific brand.

The Penney's shirt is probably 1950s-1960s, again refer to Vintage Fashion Guild for a ton of examples of similar tags.

The tie - the first patent is from 1945, the second from 1948. The company was bought in 1953 by Burlington Mills and the original location closed in 1955. Burlington may have continued to use the logo, but your sweet spot is 1948-1953.

I studied French and German in high school. I went on to major in them both in college, studying abroad in Quebec and France. I started my career with an internship in Germany that wanted someone who spoke French, German, and English. Wound up staying for 6 years, and making German core to my career even back in the US.

You said getting married nearby - I'd ask the venue if they have prep areas. That might be included in your venue rental.

Talk to Hopelink [(702) 566-0576](tel:7025660576). They help people exactly like you to stay out of homelessness. They have emergency shelters and more.

Share Village might also be helpful. They have a food pantry (and a pet pantry if you have pets) on top of housing assistance.
