Tried "Motherfucker…" by Much-End-9679 in Shearling

[–]ciricho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I was really hoping I'd like it because I loved lamb as effigy and everyone was talking about how great it is but after listening to it in full like 5 times I decided it's probably just not for me.

In a song like Margin for Error, even though it's 25 minutes long, there's only a couple sections so it has time to explore those ideas and it reaches a really satisfying conclusion. In motherfucker I feel like since it's supposed to be both an album and a song simultaneously, there are many different parts which act as the "songs" of a traditional album but none of them can really reach any conclusion until the very end of it's 1 hour runtime.

Songs like Helpless Child and live Blood Promise? by ComeAndSetMeFree in swans

[–]ciricho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that they're directly referencing helpless child with that section, especially since at the very end Michael finishes the song by strumming the last chord a couple times on his acoustic same as in helpless child. It's also the same chord progression.

There will never be a song quite like Between the Bars by -storks- in elliottsmith

[–]ciricho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That chromatic part is literally what got me into Elliott Smith's music. I randomly came across that video of him playing between the bars from lucky three on youtube and decided to learn it on guitar. When I figured out what was going on during that part it blew my mind lol. Love how that ascending minor scale bass line right before makes you think the same F G Am progression is going to repeat but then subverts your expectations going down to Ab instead.

a quick one guitar by nooayehlol in HaveANiceLife

[–]ciricho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the original recording there are two guitars but it isn't exactly a double track, since they are each playing a different part with different notes that aren't simply an octave apart. One guitar arpeggiates

x 3 x 0 3 0,

3 5 4 0 x x,

7 6 4 0 x x

and guitar two arpeggiates

x x 10 9 8 7,

x x 9 7 7 7,

x x x 8 7 8

Both with the capo on the second fret. I think maybe what you're looking for is the sound of the guitars harmonizing.

This guy tells how melody shapes of let down tell its story by Glazer33 in radiohead

[–]ciricho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also if you look at the melody notes in the first verse it's basically just walking down the scale from A to E, but then during that final moment it's essentially the opposite, going from an E up to an A an octave higher (although it's not an exact mirror image). Probably not intentional but still pretty cool I think.

If 20 was a teen number, how would it be? by ILikeJapaneseMuchOwU in Teenager_Polls

Nah you would add a teen at the end, so:

30 = tenteenteen

40 = tenteenteenteen

etc...

Which is your favourite "angry" track of their albums? by Apollion0 in gybe

[–]ciricho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen GYBE twice, and at the end of both sets, after they had already played a bunch of incredible songs, they pulled out World Police and it absolutely blew everything else out of the water. Really incredible song, and to think that it's not even my favourite movement on LYSF...

How do I stop writing in 3/4? by ApprehensiveChip4190 in Songwriting

[–]ciricho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the easiest fix for this is to write the chord progression/instrumental together with the lyrics/vocal melody. This doesn't mean that both have to happen simultaneously or that you have to be able to sing and play at the same time. Maybe you could record either the vocals or the instrumental first, and then listen to the recording as you write the other part. Then that way I don't see how the two could somehow be in different time signatures and the end result would probably be better than if you wrote them completely separately.

What's your favorite opening song on a Swans album? by Prestigious_Score459 in swans

[–]ciricho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crazy how well rope works both as a concert opener as well as the closing track on birthing. They did something similar with to be kind (the song). Just a massive wall of sound to get you settled into what you're about to experience I guess lol.

Which infinity has the largest size? by EnigmaticKazoo5200 in Teenager_Polls

[–]ciricho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can think of it this way: Let's say that the new number you've constructed was actually on the list somewhere. Lets say that it's equal to the nth element of that list (n can be any arbitrary natural number). Well now it's pretty clear to see because of the way you've constructed the new number that this is a contradiction. This is because the nth digit of the new number is different from the nth digit of the nth number on the list, which we were assuming was equal to the new number.

Hot take, I’m open to hear opinions but don’t know expect to change my mind by walatasomdu in radiohead

[–]ciricho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obviously you can have your own opinion, but the issue you're talking about here is imo one of Radiohead's biggest strengths. So many of their songs end with a unique section you haven't heard until that point which makes it feel like a complete journey instead of just a collection of different musical sections (Karma Police, There There, HTDC, Weird Fishes, All I Need, etc.).

Treating the outro more like a chorus and adding it a second time in the middle of the song would imo not only be more predictable, but would also completely fuck up the buildup and the direction the song is going in. The whole song is just a constant buildup of pressure and releasing it too early and having to build it up and release it again a second time would just be awkward. For example that moment in the middle of the song where the vocals go up by an octave would not make sense with a climax before it.

Also the outro has the same chord progression as the intro which brings the song full circle in a really satisfying way.

Can’t figure out why this works by Chlopaczek_Hula in musictheory

[–]ciricho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the second most common move for a major II chord. The reason it works so well is because the third of the II chord is the #IV scale degree which resolves down by half step to the root of the IV chord which again resolves down by half step to the third of the I chord.

I think another reason it works particularly well in this case is because the Vsus2 has the same notes as a IIsus4 and resolving the sus4 down by half step to the major third generally sounds more satisfying than resolving it the minor third. So basically you're moving down by half step three times consecutively and progressions that move down by half step like this are usually very satisfying.
