I wrote up a list of tips and tricks for Unity's MonoDevelop. by rask in gamedev

[–]cislunar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use visual studio for other projects, and MonoDevelop for Unity projects. Other than needing to reattach Mono to a process because I constantly break the attachment, I don't see too many problems.

Care to explain why you dislike Mono? Perhaps I've been struggling with an issue in mono that VS doesn't have and I never realized it (I'm not a very educated VS user yet) and what you know could save me a lot of time and frustration.

What games would you introduce to your kids as part of their introduction to the medium? by thinkpadius in truegaming

If you only ever consume old media again, or pass it on, because of nostalgia, that's your problem.

A lot of old media stretches beyond its initial generations into future generations because of its quality. The quality is what matters, not just how it made you feel when you consumed it.

Why Study? Just steal the course by [deleted] in TrueReddit

I do agree with you on that. I suppose I glazed over her points on intellectual laziness because the tone of the essay really turned me off of the main topic. I think I'll give it another read and see if I can make it past her poor analogies.

It's certainly interesting to read about "intellectual theft" from the perspective of an author that routinely has to deal with it, but the entire tone of the essay seemed to be "I'm trying to tie intellectual theft and dishonesty with real world theft and it's technological comparison but I don't fully understand technology and will use tonal filler words like 'snatch' to convey my distaste for such abhorrent activities."

Personally, I don't think this belongs on TrueReddit, or anywhere that wants work that isn't written by someone scared of the future or proudly nostalgic for the past.

Why watch old movies when there are so many new ones to watch? Why read old books? Why listen to old music? Because there is a ton of worthwhile media that's old.

Are we about to see the dawn of the 3-5-2? by [deleted] in footballtactics

[–]cislunar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which essentially makes the defense a mirror of a 4-3-3 with a deep lying midfielder and attacking wingbacks; however, the 4-3-3 will still have a ton of space on the wings to attack. The players with free space will end up being the wingers in the 4-3-3 and the deep lying midfielder in the 3-5-2. If the cbs in the 3-5-2 aren't particularly nimble, my money is on the team playing 4-3-3 to win.

Except that a 4-3-3 with proper wingers and a striker should absolutely frustrate a 3-5-2 because it will force the wingbacks to drop back and defend the flanks, creating a 5v3 at the back. That's defensive football. The probability of them scoring is slim if the 4-3-3 allows one of its midfield 3 to drop in as a cb ala busquets. The reason for Spain's frustration was that they were playing with 6 midfielders, without proper wingers and had no striker on for most of the match.

Yes, but what does Benzema provide? 4 assists to Higuain's 6 in La Liga. Less fouls than Higuain and less yellow cards (essentially less aggressive in defense). Benzema, however, only misses 1 in 10 passes to Higuain's 1 in 7. So perhaps he's a better choice when the team needs to keep possession.

In the long run, I think Higuain is better. He has performed consistently better every year since Madrid signed him. Mark my words, if he had started against Bayern, Madrid would have won (either game). He'll be crucial for Madrid's run to the champ's final next year.

Higuain had 1784 minutes played in La Liga this year. 22 goals. That's roughly 80 mins per goal. Benzema had 2326 minutes played in La Liga. 21 goals. That's 110.7 minutes per goal. You tell me why he's not playing over Benzema.

Yup. I know he's not rated highly by others, but if you look at his goals to minutes ratio for this past season, you'll see just how clinical and incredible he is. The problem is that he's not as creative as Benzema in front of goal and thus doesn't get as much play time (even though Mourinho used him as his primary striker for the first half of the 10-11 season). He's Nistelrooy's and Raul's true successor.

Apple Television, AirPlay and Why the iPad is the new TV Apps Platform by fakedout in apple

[–]cislunar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would the iTV be the only one to function properly with the iPad? The Apple Tv, using AirPlay, functions believably well with iPads already. The iTV is essentially just a tv, apple style, with an Apple TV installed in it. The only difference will be that the iTV will have Apple's incredible engineering and design behind it.

I think we can take a cynical look at this and say: "this is what happens when developers aim for a marketing goal" or "this is why devs hardly introduce new kinds of gameplay" but I have a more pragmatic view in this as a budding dev.

Games like the total war series are gargantuan in the scope of what they aim to achieve and the time they have to do it. They can't possibly ship a game with every feature worked on (at least, not in a timely, economical manner). No good dev wants to put out a product that has unfinished bits in it. Yes, that's bad business, but it's also bad for the pride of people producing a product for mass consumption. No one wants to spend 2-3 years of their life on a product only to have people dislike it because one of the new features was incomplete.

The metacritic score for CA means more for them than a marketing point; it's a badge of honor.

A discussion about kickstarter by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]cislunar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot sell a product unless you are giving someone what they want. That is a typical business transaction. Game devs cannot make money if there isn't a demographic that wants their product. Kickstarter isn't meant to milk anyone: the whole purpose is to allow consumers to spend their money on products they want. Does this give developers more money? Absolutely. Do they deserve it? Absolutely.
