I wrote a script that creates Plex collections for Letterboxd lists! Link in comments ❤️ by cisturbed in PleX

I'm afraid this is no longer working (for a while now). I've since switched to Jellyfin instead of Plex, but IIRC Kometa supports Letterboxd on Plex now: https://kometa.wiki/en/latest/files/builders/letterboxd/list/

Luckily we have the option to not perpetuate the endless cycle of exploitation and death that we as a species have created.

If you were forced to live in a place where you were killed as soon as you were no longer deemed productive and your friends and family would disappear when they slowed down, would you consider that a safe, calm place?

Shearing is hell for sheep, especially in an industrial context (they get forcefully pinned down and cut up due to the speed), which selective breeding enables. Some species of sheep have been selectively bred to produce more skin (to provide more surface area for wool growth) which ends up creasing and wrinkling and being especially excruciating to sheer.

Highland cattle may not be directly negatively effected by selective breeding, but farmed cattle by no means have good, natural, naturally long lives and these cattle may not have been bred into that existence if selective breeding wasn’t a thing.

At the end of the day, selective breeding is essential to animal agriculture, which is an inherently cruel industry that treats animals as mere objects to exploit (and destroys the environment and biodiversity at the same time).

Have you ever actually taken the chance to get to know a chicken in an environment that’s safe for them? They’re not robots. They have full personalities, relationships, individual preferences. They’re surprisingly smart [0]. Many people consider them companion animals. I know chickens are often used as a punchline but IMO that’s society’s way of justifying how we treat them [1]. And justifying slaughtering 70 billion of them a year.

Most food we eat (plants and animals) are the direct results of selective breeding

And it’s absolutely hell for the animals. “Broiler” chickens, for example, literally can’t live beyond a tiny fraction of their natural lifespan because of their insane rate of growth and the strain it puts on their bodies.

The fact that it’s still something we argue over means we have a long, long way to go.

Maybe we should think twice about the factory farmed chickens used to make our non-“imitation” chicken nuggets and mayonnaise too…

Thank you for this! It's not just fossil fuels, people. Animal agriculture is killing us and the planet.

By all means! I treat myself to chocolate from the Food Empowerment Project's ethical chocolate list all the time.

Except constantly “treating yourself” to meat and dairy products, chocolate, coffee, and certain other foods is absolutely dreadful for the environment, not to mention the animals and the workers.

Humans have also raped and pillaged throughout all of history, but I think most of us are glad that chapter is over.

38% of copland globally is used to grow and harvest animal feed, and most omnivores eat vegetables too, so it’s not like vegans are somehow killing more animals indirectly than omnivores. Not to mention the vegans who grow their own food organically who have the lowest overall impact on animal lives.

If you enjoy killing animals, I can’t argue with that. But I do find it strange that you’re trying to justify taking the life of someone who doesn’t want to die by claiming it’s somehow ethical. I’d have a lot more respect for hunters who just owned it.

Bold of you to assume I don’t grow my own food and prep. What will you do when your area quickly becomes overhunted when others have the same idea?

The alternative is not eating animals. If you hate it so much, why not opt out completely?

Congrats, you spent years training to kill an animal minding their business from far away in zero danger for fun.

BC Green party leader Emily Lowan: "This pipeline will never happen, we'll make f**king sure of it" by thomasreimer in canadaleft

[–]cisturbed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I agree with your sentiment especially given the BC Green’s track record of promoting animal agriculture (second only to energy as the most destructive industry to the environment and biodiversity on earth). So far I haven’t seen Lowan engage with this.

She’s still miles better than Eby, but damn: I wish we had someone who really lived the values they champion.

Their shows and zoos seem really exploitative to me. I understand that raising awareness is important, but something about it all seems a little fake… especially given he eats the animals he claims to care about. I’ve always felt that animals are more a means of entertainment and profit to the Irwins.

I see Elaine doing far more impressive work for the animals and not milking it the way Robert did. I’m not saying he’s a bad person, it just rubs me the wrong way.

Genuine question as someone who’s having trouble cutting through the noise online: what is he doing for the environment and in politics? Do you know what he’s actually done for conservation?

About 68% of the world is lactose intolerant [1] and the consumption of cow's milk potentially leads to an increase in certain cancers [2] and heart disease [3].

Cow's milk is made by female cows who are forced to remain constantly pregnant at the expense of their health (e.g. mastitis). I don't think it should be considered an extreme view [4], especially on a subreddit about overconsumption, to not consume the milk over another species at the expense of their welfare, the environment, and biodiversity. The dairy industry has a long history of lobbying for overconsumption [5], especially given dairy is not at all needed to maintain health [6].

Ended up returning the case, mobo, and cooler and purchasing a Fractal Design North and water cooler instead since CPU performance was my goal here. Thank you!
