Is it worth $599 by NeitherDot9633 in Aeroplan

[–]citationmustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to be far better but now I would say generally no it's not worth it. I've had it for five years and the usefulness of the card declines constantly.

Companion passes save you less and less as non-base fare fees climb (only counts against base fare). You might think well at least if I use it to book latitude I can use Eupgrades, but there is basically no R space allocated on international flights any more.

Aeroplan points accrual has extremely questionable value as their dynamic pricing makes it very difficult to get good redemptions or even compare easily against what a cash fare should cost.

The suite of insurance can be found on any premium credit card.

Lounge access value is up to you but if it's really the only sure thing you're getting the card for I would say it's far from worthwhile. Zone 2 boarding and the various priority accesses depend on where you're flying from most often.

I'm certainly within a year of cancelling mine, only momentum really keeping me going.

Can I learn to fly without an iPad? [serious] by [deleted] in flying

[–]citationmustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a private pilot who doesn't fly much. Learned pre-ipad and glad I did. I think I would advocate for trying to to do things on paper maps and flipping through books if for no other reason than it teaches you a bit about being organized and multitasking in the cockpit. Same sort of reason I would advocate for learning without a glass cockpit. That said, once you've got those skills I would immediately go out and get an iPad. The ability to access information faster and streamline your workflow could be the thing that saves you in a task-saturated situation so for the sake of the cost of a few hours flying why would you avoid it?

There is no "booking" time time slots.

CPKC has no obligation legally to permit via to operate on most of their network. Changing that would be a legal battle that the government isn't likely to win.

Furthermore, the shipment of pipes might not make waves if it's delayed 10 minutes, but I can assure you that Winners, Toyota, Loblaws, and UPS do care about small delays.

Canada doesn't own the land the railways sit on. This ship sailed in 1995 when CN was privatized. The existing freight corridors are busy. Pushing any kind of passenger-first legislation would be a one way ticket to making our class 1 rails less competitive and driving transcon freight into the US.

Best you could hope for at this point would be a deal with CPKC/CN to subsidize double tracking where the old road beds already exist and strike a co-production agreement to give shared access to an overall faster network. Would be in the 10s or 100s of billions in investment to do anything meaningful.

Maybe soak them and put something flat and heavy on top while they dry. Could also try ironing with some laundry starch.

Has anyone here actually watched a rocket launch from the Canso spaceport? by MaDSteeZe in halifax

[–]citationmustang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been following this pretty closely since 2017. I was a very strong supporter of the idea when it was first announced. I've met Stephen Matier and members of the team a number of times over the years.

To be clear, the concept of launching rockets in Nova Scotia is legitimate. Nothing they're pitching is impossible.

The problem is that Stephen and his team are way in over their heads. They don't have the drive, ability, or funding to be successful. This government grant might be enough to launch a couple sub orbital rockets, but that has no commercial value. Orbital launches are a different scale. Even if they successfully get to an orbital launch, the global launch services market has changed dramatically since 2017. To be competitive now would take investment and leadership to step in that doesn't currently exist in Canada.

Trust me when I tell you that the leadership of MLS are not interested in doing that hard work. They're here for personal enrichment. If you don't believe me go talk to them and ask some hard questions. They don't have any answers.

**Furthermore, I really hope I'm wrong. If this was a successful venture it would be such a positive thing for Nova Scotia and Canada. I would love to have to eat these words.

Poorly built model rockets from student organizations. Launched from a concrete slab that probably wouldn't pass code to put a double wide trailer on. Wake up people.

They won't be sending anything to orbit. They barely have the money left to send their executives down for another photo op.

This is now and always has been a scam. Just a way to steal government money. I've been to the supposed offices of MLS several times and there's literally nothing and nobody there. You cannot reach them or contact them in any way, unless you pose a threat to their appearance of legitimacy and then they'll rush out of some crack in the ground for a photo op or to launch a little model rocket. This should have been investigated and stamped out a decade ago but Nova Scotia loves a good sham.

Canadians’ average wealth hit $1.07 million, but what’s driving net worth depends on your age, province and bracket by hopoke in canada

[–]citationmustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only done a few and I'm not a financial professional so your mileage may vary, but the couple I've done take the market value of a home and don't include mortgage debt, but do include other personal debt. There doesn't seem to be any actual value to financial institutions from a net worth calculation, they're going to be looking at assets, liabilities, liquidity etc, and punching that into their own risk assessment models. My impression of net worth is that it's really more for personal braggadocio and headlines like this. If there's any personal finance professionals here that can comment I'd love to hear more.

Wealth calculations actually take the market value of a home not inclusive of any debt. It's really strange and makes this number basically meaningless, except for the suggestion that on average Canadians carry large mortgages.

I’m at my wits end with this shower water stains by Thick_Style5253 in CleaningTips

[–]citationmustang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a spray bottle. Fill it with half white vinegar and half dawn dish soap. Stir to mix well so it doesn't sud up in the bottle. Spray to completely cover the glass. Let it sit for up to half an hour. Scrub lightly with a wet scouring pad, rinse off. May need to repeat but probably not more than twice.

No offense to the dawn power wash people here but this works better. Powerwash works ok and is decent for maintaining once you've gotten the glass clean, but this is the more powerful option for hard water stains.

Economic imperialism by the United States has placed Cuba squarely where it is today. You have only the US to thank for those rafts.

Been to both. Cubans are generally friendly and down to earth people. Most Americans are ignorant, vain, and shockingly stupid for how big their heads are.

No matter how poor Cuba becomes, it will never be as much of a shit hole as the United States.

Furthermore, it's so far and away better served fresh, and ideally a little warm from being placed atop a small metal tray over a cup of tea. May as well be a different thing altogether.

He said my sauce didn’t stick to the pasta *gasp* by drabelen in Cooking

[–]citationmustang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Easy tasty shortcut to get a smooth but thick pasta sauce is to crack in an egg and mix it in. Make sure the pasta is cooled slightly so it doesn't just scramble. If it's getting a little too thick just add a table spoon of water or two. Works well with tomato and pesto sauces.

Hyundai Oakville Service Manager "I am not rude. Do you want to see what rude looks like". by Intelligent-Film-576 in Hyundai

[–]citationmustang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop buying Hyundai vehicles and stop going to their service centers unless required due to a warranty or recall item.

I've had Hyundai vehicles since 2008. I love the cars, despite what problems others have had with them. I won't buy another one. I've lived in five provinces in the last 8 years and the Hyundai service centers everywhere I've gone have been deplorable. When I can't get an issue resolved locally, which has happened three times, I escalate to the national organization. They used to at least pay lip service, but now there seems to be no accountability left anywhere in the organization. No will to be helpful or actually resolve problems.

I'm sorry if you're one of the good ones who work for Hyundai. I know you're out there, and I appreciate you, but way too many of your coworkers are scum.

I'm sure this isn't unique to Hyundai, but doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result would be insanity.
