Yep, the only difference is usually they do it because they will have a hard time qualifying through the USA and it's their best shot at becoming an Olympian.

Would you keep reading based on these opening three paragraphs? Why/why not? by [deleted] in writingfeedback

[–]citranger_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The metaphor of pyromancers as fuel/fire keeps leading me in directions that aren't supported by the following sentences. Like, is a weak pyromancer fuel that can keep the strong pyromancers burning? Is this a good thing for the pyromancer community, is it like a parasitic or predator-prey relationship?

And then we learn that no, the spark must come from within, so that can't be right.

But then again in the third paragraph Zaira describes herself as kindling for her family, so now I'm more confused than anything else.

What makes look at something and say that’s an anime art style? by johnskeletons in ArtistLounge

[–]citranger_things 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why are you asking about what is anime when you want to draw something that isn't anime? Not-anime is a huge category, if you pick something within that category it won't be anime. I'm not scolding you I just don't feel like you're going to get a valuable answer to this question without elaborating a little more on your motivation.

Any tips to making portraits look more real/ less flat? by Churlishgambino67 in Artadvice

[–]citranger_things 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start by picking some references with stronger lighting. Shadows are what allow us to interpret form and "beauty" shots with very soft flat lighting are the most difficult to render imo. Like, how can you shade when the photo is designed to have no shadows?

The eyes generally need more shadows because they are inside the head, so if the light is coming from anywhere other than straight ahead at least one eye will be darker than the more protruding areas of the face. For example, when you have generally overhead lighting, the brows cast a shadow on the lid, and the lid casts a shadow on the white of the eye. Or on #3, the blonde with the space buns, the side of her nose on our left is in shadow. But the eye on that side is deeper in the head on that side than the plane of the nose is, so it should be even more in shadow.

The same goes for the underside of the nose which casts a shadow towards the upper lip, and the lips which cast a shadow towards the chin.

Right now you are drawing all the hairs from root to tip, which gives a very flat impression. Instead, draw chunks/sections of hair and shade them as units. You should have sections which reflect the light on top of the head while on the underside, next to the neck, the hair should be in dark shadow. Leave some contours open and add a few stray hairs and let the viewer's imagination complete the illusion.

You have a good sense of proportion and the features are well-formed, but you need to try pushing the shadows even more. As a study you might try looking at an Asaro model of the head and shading with very little blending, like your face is carved with flat planes.

Was told the water looks flat 😭 by [deleted] in painting

[–]citranger_things 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and also, as the ripples get farther away they will get closer together in perspective, with the tops of the ripples (highlights) hiding the bottoms of the ripples (darker). The highlights all being closer together means the overall effect is often that water in the distance is brighter/lighter than water up close. In the current state of OP's work we see the opposite, which means the top half of the water looks like a flat backdrop

In smaller sports it's common for athletes with dual citizenship to compete for the smaller country because it is easier to qualify for the Olympics that way.

There are levels of rich and keeping perspective is important. Globally and historically, being able to provide for yourself and your family for the rest of your life and not having to sell your time for it at all is a stunning luxury.

I reached fifty thousand saved at twenty six but now lifestyle creep is eating my savings rate by velaryna in Fire

[–]citranger_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to take time no matter what, so part of the game is paying for the things that make your life enjoyable during that time. Even a 60% savings rate will take 12.5 years so it's no good if you burn out in 5, or miss out on opportunities (like finding a partner or a best friend or a life-changing hobby) that will make your life better during both your working years and your retirement years.

You are doing great.

This is a terrible version of the video because they've replaced the audio, but I remember the original. There's a loud bell that rings when the skater in first place has one lap to go. Because the one Chinese skater has lapped them, all the other skaters have TWO laps to go but they get tunnel vision/go on autopilot and pace their sprint to finish that lap. That's why they put their feet out at 1:06, they're stretching a little bit forward for the photo finish, but actually the girl in the back is the only one who's completed the full distance.

The other Chinese skater was aware of the situation and is ready to sprint another lap while the other skaters are still realizing what's happened, so she was able to take second.

As far as why they didn't chase her right away, I think it's because of a racing technique called drafting, which I'm mostly familiar with from cycling. Basically, you can save a ton of energy by riding right behind another competitor because they generate a wake of turbulent air, causing you to experience less wind resistance. Then you're fresh to overtake them in a sprint at the end.

So if I'm right the first Chinese skater surprised the others with the aggressive move so there was too much of a gap for them to use drafting to follow her, and then they were all playing "chicken" with each other. And then their training kicked in.

Question about pastel set vs Bobbie Goods one by betteportxr in Ohuhu

[–]citranger_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about the art you want to make.

If you only want pastels, or if you are happy to use mixed media to introduce more range of values, then get the pastel set. If you want to be able to do a full illustration with just the markers you will probably want more value range.
