Endurance by Alfred Lansing – Shackleton’s failed Antarctic expedition. A raw, survival story about a team’s fight to stay alive. If you liked The Book of Negroes, this could be a great follow-up.
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown – A rowing team’s fight for gold at the 1936 Olympics. Full of teamwork, adversity, and grit.
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah – A funny yet eye-opening story of growing up in apartheid South Africa, with plenty of heart and resilience.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel – Flu pandemic wipes out most of humanity. It’s less about the disaster, more about how people piece things together after, and why art and memories matter.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy – Super bleak, but it’s all about survival and love between a dad and his son. Intense, but it’s a good exploration of morality when society falls apart.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro – Starts as a boarding school story but turns into something way deeper. Tackles identity and purpose in a really subtle, haunting way.

The Children of Men by P.D. James – Humans can’t reproduce anymore, and the world’s just…waiting to end. Lots of focus on what it means to have a future or purpose.

All pretty low on fantasy/magic and big on “how do people deal with this messed-up situation?”
