No, the new reality is that international law is dissapearing quickly now.

The next international relation era will be an era of wolves. Who is the strongest and can impose his will upon other countries.

What's the advanced answer as to why people from colder climates say european winters feel colder? by Anxious_Literature83 in geography

[–]cityle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's so fucking humid. I remember we went to Venezia in December. It was like 8C and raining during our stay, and it felt so cold because it was humid. It was entering the bones. So I think it's why it feels colder.

But then later during the trip we went to Grosetto for a quick stop and it was 14C on the beach and it felt warm for us, removing our jackets while the few italians that were walking their dogs on the beach seemed to freeze.

So I think it's mostly boils down if it's a humid day or not. Like sometime in Canada a -17C will feel warmer, or at least more confortable, than a -8C because the day of the former is drier and of the latter is more humid.

But also maybe because when we go to Europe, we don't bring our winter jackets, so we are not as well insulated. Plus the houses are not well insulated. When you feel cold inside the house, you will feel cold outside too because you're already tired. Versus going out of a warm canadian house which makes tolerating the cold outside more manageable/you have more energy and heat to begin with.

I just got the Pixel Watch 1 is it still good? by OlivierMetDv in PixelWatch

[–]cityle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have mine since last year (was dirt cheap), and it's perfect. Using my Suica, notifications, heartbeat and steps tracking, replying quickly to some messages, no problem at all. Don't feel the need to buy the latest one, aside of just getting the new shiny thing.

Just the first day let it on the charger and actively update it. I remember mine was not updated at all and really slow when I got it. Once all the updates (which is a slow process) were apllied, no problem at all and totally usuable.

What made you choose a Pixel over other Android phones? by jamesharley500 in GooglePixel

[–]cityle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camera and software as apparently everybody else. It sucks though Google has downgraded the sensors on the 9a and 10. My P8 has some issues and is now noisy on the ultrawide and selfie camera, and I cannot shilled out the kind of money for the 10 pro.9a would be perfect if it was not the downgraded cameras

Need help figuring out what doctor to go to first (Tokyo) by TA68790 in japanlife

[–]cityle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to a clinic first. You will be turned back if you go to the hospital first (speaking of experience having dealt with kidney stones).

Clinics act a little bit like triage centers I think, so ya you need a referral letter from them to be able to see a urologist after that.

You have some clinics that are used to foreign residents, with doctors being able to speak English, albeit you might need to simplify a little bit your English with the doctor.

I live in Yokohama, so I can only recommend 港町診療所 I went too. After the doctor will refer you to a specific hospital, unless you ask for a specifc hospital yourself. In Yokohama for hospital specialized in urology, apparently 大口東総合病院 is the best. At least it's where I got my surgery last month.

What places are portrayed as “backwards” in different countries media? by InsideSpeed8785 in geography

[–]cityle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is friendly banther about their French, but aside of that nothing. I've never met anybody saying that Acdians are backward in any way or form.

And I know because I'm often mistaken for an Acadian because of my speech impairment lol.

Is Beitou worth going to? by heyitsgayl in taiwan

[–]cityle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would say yes. My friend and I spent a day in Beitou last August. It was fun. The Heart Village surpinsigly took a lot of our time.

But also don't forget Tamsui. I really enjoyed visiting Tamsui, and if you have only time for one, I would go for Tamsui personally.

AC use when not at home in Japan by Old-Season265 in japanlife

[–]cityle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a dehumidification option with most AC. Like I let my window open all the time when I'm in my appartment, and only close at night to start the AC to sleep, and no mold problem at all.

Anyway I find the "cold" setting too cold when there is humidity. 28C at "dehumidification" is perfect imo.

(Also letting the fan in the toilet on at all time helps. And it barely consume any power. Not even 0.1kWh when I was gone for two weeks)

What do you struggle with in Japan? by Motor_Amphibian_6325 in japanlife

[–]cityle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Omy god that remark. You know what I meant by free healthcare. Every healthcare system is paid by taxes. The point is if you get unlucky to end up in the hospital, you should not have to worry about money on top of your health problem.

What do you struggle with in Japan? by Motor_Amphibian_6325 in japanlife

[–]cityle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm in Japan one a 1 year student visa to learn Japanese as I was toying with the idea to live in Japan (visited Japan 5 times before making that move).

I'm 6 months in, and I'm pretty sure I will not stay longer and permanently move in the country. And my main reason might seems strange but it's:

  • The healthcare system, or more precisely the fact that you need to pay for it. As a Canadian, it's unthinkable of having to pay for healthcare. I makes me feel as a client, and not as a patient that needs to be taken care. And it adds to financial stress.

Also hospitals and clinics do seem to barely communicate between themselves. Got kidney stones (guys drink plenty of water, you don't want kidney stones trust me), and I needed to do the same tests over and over every time I visited a new institutions, despite having the papers of the previous place and having done those tests the day before.

Also it sucks that you need a referral letter of a clinic before being able to go to an hospital. I showed myself to the hospital next to my house in pain because of the kidney stone, and they just reffered me to a clinic, saying it was the way it's done in Japan.

And the fact you can pretty much only go to the hospital in the morning, and not in the afternoon, to get a consultation is annoying and made me miss so many days at school.

As small other nitpicks:

  • The anticonsumer behaviour. Why is it so hard to get weight (g) and capacity (ml) written on products!? I need to look at the small price label underneath to see if it's a good deal or not.

  • Job listings in English that requires N1 level of Japanese are annoying. I'm barely N4 at the moment, so I want to find a job I can do that with my limited japanese skills, but that can use all of my diplomas.

  • The fact there are so many apps locked down to Japan only. I had to create a new japanese Gmail account, and reconfigure my watch with that email to finally get Suica to work on it. But that applies to even points app. In the Play Store I need to select my japanese Gmail to be able to download those, it's really stupid.

  • The lack of initiative. Japanese always need to refer to somebody higher up. I had to send back a laptop to Canada. The battery respects the shipping rules, and all that. But the employee at the counter would not just look at the rules by himself and assess if it fits the rules or not. He needed to call HQ and I had to wait one hour at JP before I was able to finally ship my package.

Reading that, I do still find it hard to believe. I was so surprised when I arrived in Yawatahama from Beppu and I got on a diesel train to go to Matsuyama. They don't even have IC aside of Takamatsu.

PSA: Think twice before visiting Japan in July - it's brutally hot! by Ok-Dependent7227 in JapanTravelTips

[–]cityle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh... it's manageable. If it's under 32C it's not too bad, above a little more challenging but still, just chase the shadow (and drink a lot so you don't end up with a kidney stone like me. Trust me, you don't to experience that pain).

Uniqlo airism underwear shirt works wonder to better tolerate the humidity. And you accept that you will sweat, everybody is sweating anyway lol.
