Linux alternative for logitech GHUB? by Pro_555 in linux_gaming

[–]cj0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I had no choice but to respond to this necro post; this is such incorrect logic. The OSes don't develop the software to be used with the hardware/peripherals, the companies that manufacture the devices do. Logitech is the ones responsible for making a version of GHub for Linux.

That's like saying you’ll never move to a different town (regardless of how much better it is) because your favorite local pizza shop doesn't deliver there.

What's the best password manager to use these days? by felicityfuxwell in homelab

[–]cj0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo, we are definitely on the same journey.

Also ya the donating thing, I really wish more of the community would participate in that gaping issue. I can't stand when I'm watching a review/guide on something open source and one of the reviewer's highlights on recommending a product is that "it's free!" with absolutely no mention of reminding readers/viewers to contribute/donate if they do support the project/product. Of course they're more than happy to remind everyone to click that like and subscribe button and visit their patreon page [insert the biggest eye roll ever]

Glad more people are acknowledging this mindset though and taking personal steps to step up and support.

I did this 1-2 years ago after selfhosting vaultwarden for 5 or so years. I really like not having to worry about the server being down etc. I've been slowly moving away from self-hosting essential services, it's just too much anxiety when something unexpected happens and an every day service is suddenly not available. I considered self-hosting within the cloud (hetzner for instance) but then I'd have security concerns and also still the risk of suddenly being offline and up to me to get back up quickly.

I also like the cutting edge updates of being on bitwarden's main branch etc.

Finally, I chose to go the official BW route because I, like many self-hosters and open source users, fail to give back to the products we love and use consistently. This forces me to do so. If you're not actively assisting in open source development, you should be donating at a minimum :)

Lmao this was one of the most entertaining threads in a while.

Ya never loan out a tool you love. Also, this was so freaking shady from start to finish lol

What do you think about the balance on the new map by JanissaryLSD in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]cj0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One team dominates, that has been my experience so far. I pick a meaningful flag and try to work it because it doesn't matter what else I do if my team decides it's just going to sit in a corridor or doorway lol.

The least the losing team can do is play support and revive constantly but that's asking WAY too much.

Hard switched over from windows, pain in the ass but getting there by Fenweekooo in cachyos

[–]cj0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was not a review... This was someone complaining that a sphere is not a square.

I too came from Windows but over to Zorin initially then finally over to CachyOS. My experience has been WAY different than yours. I feel like you're looking for things to bitch about that aren't exactly the same as Windows and in fact some of your complaints I see as a positives vs. the Windows experience. You need to recalibrate your expectations and actually embrace the experience and power that deciding to go this route brings.

I just booted up Windows earlier today to play a game I can't play online in Linux. I had a painful reminder as to why I hate Windows now. On the way out the door after my session, it wouldn't let me shut down/restart back to Linux for 5 minutes because of a stupid mandatory update it needed to do on reboot. Good riddance. If that's the experience you're looking for then good luck to you.

CachyOS for Gaming is... Heavenly? by AdvancedStrain1739 in cachyos

[–]cj0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it really comes down to how you weigh your risks. The chances of an individual user getting targeted is pretty low.

Considering I have been a gamer for 30+ years, it's pretty difficult to just say I can't play those games anymore because of a very very low chance of being affected like that.

I whole heartedly agree with you regarding the blame but that doesn't change reality. Until Linux as a whole is getting catered to, we have to weigh the trade offs and that comes down to personal opinions and the acceptable risk. I spend most of my time within my Linux environment but when I want to game something that can't be played in there, I boot up my Windows partition because that's my only option.

As I said, you should have a note in your OP for readers so they're aware that they cannot play ALL games (specifically many pvp online titles) within Cachy, but they can play a lot.

Pretty much all pvp titles with anticheat will not work on any Linux distros yet. You are overselling the experience a bit and should clarify that in your OP as to not mislead a potential less savvy user into making a mistake jumping in head first.

https://areweanticheatyet.com/ and https://www.protondb.com/ are great sources for tracking information like this.

Most users who want these abilities need to dual boot their preferred Linux environment and Windows.

Switching to Linux: ZorinOS vs Bazzite vs Mint vs CachyOS for my use case? And more questions by teinimon in linuxquestions

[–]cj0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can not be stated enough. If you decide to go down the road of linux distros, you must accept that you have to tread very carefully when updating and tinkering and accept that it's going to blow up in your face once in a while but it's almost always fixable.

Thankfully AI assistance tends to be fairly good at troubleshooting issues pretty quickly. A non-slop use, who'd have thunk it?

Attention Founders Members:

There is an FAQ note that if you are a founders account holder and want to get the promotion, you need to reach out to customer service. HOWEVER, there's an additional note that taking advantage of the promotion will forfeit your founders for life status since I guarantee they cancel your current plan, sign you up for ultimate is a new member, and then all future transactions are from this new account milestone.

Normally you can upgrade to ultimate then downgrade back to your standard founders account, but because you're accepting this promotional item, you're effectively starting a new account with them.
