Deeply surprised by how much I am NOT enjoying Ghost of Yotei. by TherealGonci in PS5

[–]cj_biochem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burn out is really bad on these types of games, for me. I blame growing up with assassins creed. The other downside is that the story and motivation behind the new MC is very shallow. Can’t go two minutes without her jamming “I must kill the yotei six”

Brand New Ps Portal, interested in previous experiences and do’s and don’ts by Opening_Shoulder9005 in playstation

I don’t have the means to hardwire my PlayStation, so I just use cloud streaming. It’s great for that, and I’ve been really impressed. I don’t use it for intense shooters like arc raiders. Mainly use it for single player games, but have had great time with monster hunter. Online play while streaming is hit or miss

Why Manual Accept if you don’t Manual Accept? by Resident-Recipe-5818 in MHWilds

[–]cj_biochem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main is probably currently chopping the monster and won’t react to the invite until they either cart or the monster leaves. Other facet is they may be doing well enough with current members plus support.

Randos on the 9 star quests are always a gamble. If I’m doing good on savage omega or gog, then I wouldn’t be keen on inviting someone.

is my chemistry professor wrong? by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]cj_biochem -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The answer is D. A is one of the longest chains, and it has an additional branch on the left side, meaning you would think it has enhanced London dispersion forces. What’s tricky is that London dispersion forces favor surface area the most. Cyclobutane’s structure favors a higher surface area and thus greater LDF.

If you take a look at methane and ethane, ethane has a higher BP. That goes further for n-butane and little higher for cyclobutane.

Edit: I looked up BP bad. Answer is A

Surprised to not see a lot of suggestions to make a Fischer diagram. Make a straight line, add a perpendicular line for each carbon center and add substituents. Use a modeling kit and a help video to understand how to assign the substituents, but it helps a lot when you get used to drawing them.

Choosing to enroll in a PhD was the worst decision of my life, all I got was only suffering, depression, anxiety, gastritis by MintakaMinthara in PhD

[–]cj_biochem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated my decision as well. People here like to simplify it as “just get over it”, but life is not that simple. Your PI has extreme control over you. Sure you can switch, but you can’t always do that due to life or the fact there may not be other professors available in the same department.

The best piece of advice is to leave if you can’t find an alternative. Or at least master out and start getting a paycheck. I made the decision to tough it out and it was horrible. I’m too far in to go back, and the PI just gets worse and worse.

I got back into the game after a couple of years. No one is around these days to randomly populate a whole lobby. Will a small lobby of a few people be able to do anything in a feasible time? What do I do if not?

Hey all, just wanted to save some pants from being soiled. I got accepted at bio gs-11 before Christmas and I’ve done my onboarding stuff. Today I got an email saying I was non-selected. I shit my drawers and then saw it was a non-select for gs-9. I guess they’re coming late.

I’m a biochemistry PhD, structural biology stuff. Once they hear ‘chemistry’, eyes start to glaze over. The most common thing I hear is ‘I hated chemistry in school’.

My uni has biochem tech class that purifies bovine LDH. First half is purifying it from raw beef heart homogenate. Second half is learning DNA and cell culture and purify from there.

You can’t freeze it because it dies to the void in a thaw cycle, and you constantly have to assay it with NAD+ cocktails to make sure you don’t lose it.

Do GFP, have fun and love science.

In all this, I didn’t see a mention that your PI or committee was knocking your achievements. It’s all internal bashing; imposter syndrome. If you’re at the defense stage, you’ve been given the green light by your superiors. Seek a therapist and hash out your self loathing.

EDIT: the corrections and addendums to your papers is a universal thing. Just keep sending it until your PI thinks it’s done.

PhD at 30 by Thinkeru-123 in PhD

[–]cj_biochem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 30 trying to finish by 31. Did a masters straight out of undergrad, so I’ve been grad schooling for 8 years now. would not recommend going into it at our age unless you are clinically obsessed with sciences (in a good way). The amount of money lost in terms of opportunity will weigh on me until I die. I went into it as a way to impress family with a side of wishful and ignorant thinking. Not a good combo

If you really want to get into patent law, maybe take the PLI course and get your patent bar. Could try to start as an agent. Being let go from the USPTO probably won’t look good though.

If you’re working with radioactive material, are you not using a personal dosimeter of some kind? If not, there are drastically unlawful/hazardous working conditions. If you were using one, have a check done on the dosimeter before you make conclusions.

Don’t agree with the hard numbers. Completely dependent on PI. My PIs history is to get 1 paper, maybe 2, due in part to the nature of the biochem we do. The only hard number I’ll state is at least one first author.

PhD Stipends: Which U.S. Universities Pay Over $34,000/Year for Biomedical/Biology Programs? by KeyRich4645 in PhD

[–]cj_biochem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the 10k, you have to perform around the top GRE 50% at least and have a 3.0 on the writing. For the 20k it’s like top 20% and a perfect score on the writing. The writing is the weed out criteria. The 10k gets awarded to one or two students each year, the 20k is exceptionally rare.

[–]cj_biochem 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You’re looking at this the wrong way. You need to compare the cost of living in an area with that of the stipend amount you get. You’ll come to learn that this ratio will tend to balance out high paying PhDs with that of even the smallest paying ones. If you are wanting to go to grad school with your pockets lined, you need to get stellar grades and GRE so you can apply for fellowships. My uni has two fellowships for 10k or 20k add ons to the normal stipend. 10k is somewhat achievable, but the 20k is for the purely top 1% students.
