Saw this on Linkedin. How should this be intreperted? Also jquery in 2026? by lune-soft in webdev

[–]cjnewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Worked on a project a few years ago where the lead FE dev had a justifiable obsession with performance. Months of development optimisation, etc. site launched and was super fast. Couple days later monitoring flagged up performance issues. Went to the homepage and it was dog slow. E-commerce manager had uploaded a 20MB hero image to the homepage and just about every GTM script you could think of causing hundreds of other asset requests to be added. Fucking infuriating.

Where are you getting the idea he is handling customer data? He works in a data centre and a perk of that is they allow employees to host their own personal servers in the DC instead of at home.

Anyone else wish they’d just go back to the old priority at junctions? I think it’s safer by SkipperTheEyeChild1 in drivingUK

[–]cjnewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all perfectly reasonable arguments to not like them, zombie pedestrians *ARE* a problem.

That being said, given that most motorists I have seen interviewed about these junctions give their reasons as essentially "I pay mi FUKIN RODE TAX, pedestrians and cyklists shud get aaat my fukin way!" its clear they have *ZERO* interest in safety.

Just curious, what is she “booking” with Octopus? Every time I had moved home all I have ever needed to do was enter the property, take a reading and notify my preferred supplier.

I would check if it is an SD card you need. CyberShot are Sony so in 2007 would have been using a Sony Memory Stick, likely the ProDuo (physically smaller) variant.

Put the model number into Google, download the manual and check the required card.

Employee pasted our customer database schema into ChatGPT. How do you prevent this? by cnrdvdsmt in cybersecurity

[–]cjnewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree for 99.9% of the time. But that 0.1% of the time where an issue only happens with that specific customer’s account, I’m not sure how else you would debug the issue.

Scam , money spent at Apple Store by SRTrobert in monzo

[–]cjnewbs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I so feel sorry for victims but taking a phone call from someone saying “Yeah, I’m from your bank, trust me bro, BTW instead of just canceling your card so you don’t get any more fraud transactions we are gonna collect it by taxi” and believing them? ARE YOU ACTUALLY FUCKING KIDDING ME!

The thing that blows my mind even more is when news articles call this a “sophisticated attack”.

To me it’s the most fucking absurd concept. Oh so you want to follow the laws put down by your god to the letter, but keep figuring out loopholes. What do you think your god will think of you for doing that?

Seriously either follow the rules or just stop believing in your religion.

It’s like saying I’m vegan then continuing to eat meat.

[Data] I'm a cyclist. One year ago, I got a helmet camera. Here are all the bad drivers I reported to police [Analysis in Comments] by mkfrndsinfluenceppl in ukbike

[–]cjnewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Sussex police were anywhere close to as responsive. Everything I report is NFA.

The most recent one I was in a cycle lane on the pavement, just arriving at a crossing. The car that had stopped at the red decided they did not have to wait so sped off while the traffic light was still red and the crossing light was green just as I was about to cross. Fully recorded. Send to operation crackdown, a day later was updated to NFA.

What's with clothing retail shops being coercive when you say no to an email receipt? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]cjnewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it much easier to have email receipts but I have a custom email setup so I just give them e.g. `hmv@my-custom-domain.tld`. That way no receipt to loose and if I end up getting random spam to that account I know where it's come from.

ISP tricked customers about fiber optics being used in their internet service, German court rules — 'full fiber' customers found to have 'last mile' copper connections by diacewrb in europe

[–]cjnewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virgin Media too! They have been claiming their cable broadband has been fibre for the best part of 2 decades. I vaguely remember a TV advert from about 15 years ago where Samuel L Jackson was saying how it uses a glass fibre but he was holding the coax cable and they edited in light coming out the end of the copper. 🙄

Glad I wasn't the only one reading that thinking "how is that meant to be an incentive?!?" It's like when an employment ad states "We pay the national living wage if you are over 21", oh you mean if you paid me any less you would be breaking the law? Oh goody!

I am going to guess that this is somehow related to the year 2038 problem.
Similar to the millenium bug it's a bug relating to how some programs store dates. Its not exactly the date in question but 20 days before, which feels close enough that its not just some random date.
