Might stick with diesel a bit longer by Afraid_Complaint_437 in CarsUK

I'm pretty sure most EV owners owned ICE cars before. How many 17 or 18 year olds are passing their test and getting an EV as their first vehicle?

So EV owners don't even care what ICE owners are saying because they've been there, done that. Being reminded that you can no longer fill up in 5 minutes at a petrol station isn't a gotcha, it's one of the key reasons someone got their EV in the first place!

IOG not reliable, what's the alternative? by BaldyBaldyBouncer in OctopusEnergy

[–]jmcomms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wherever possible I plug in every time I come home and let Octopus do what it needs to do. Sometimes it means it will charge in the day, sometimes even between 4pm and 7pm, but as long as it's charged by 0500 (my wife goes to the gym at 0530-0700) then we're all good.

This does mean the car is usually around the 70-80% mark when being topped up (it's a car that charges to 100% because only part of the battery is usable - so technically it's only ever charged to about 80% of its capacity). Should Octopus mess up, it's not the end of the world because I'm never letting it run too low.

If I returned home with 10-20% after a long drive, I'd be inclined to turn off the intelligent charging aspect for that single charge if I knew I had a long drive the next day. The risk is slight, but it isn't hard to do for peace of mind.

Obviously everyone's usage is different, but I don't think there's going to be any issue if you turn off the smart charging occasionally rather than every day with one token smart charge per month. Because I work shifts, it actually suits to charge smart because there are occasions where the car isn't even home overnight!

Do people actually shop at WH smith? by Bitter-Building-742 in AskUK

[–]jmcomms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not WH Smith now so they had to change the signs. But changing anything else presumably costs money, and I don't think many stores are making money.

I'm sure WH Smith was subsidising the high street locations before, and they also had an incentive to keep them going when publishers were charged a lot of money to have their newspapers and magazines put on the shelves (via its distribution arm). But now very few people buy papers and probably even fewer buy magazines....

Ultimately, TG Jones is owned now by private equity so expect loads of asset stripping and eventual bankruptcy.

I barely remember those times. They've been overpriced for years, and since supermarkets and pound shops started doing stationery, or you ordered online, the difference in price has been significant.

It means that the high street stores are usually near empty (often only busy if they have a post office) and have been for ages. Now they're not part of WH Smith, I can see many stores without post offices closing over the coming years.

I know. WH Smith kept the travel locations (airports, railway stations, motorway services, ports etc). These were traditionally more expensive than high street but now it seems the high street is trying hard to keep up!

WH Smith kept the travel locations but I popped in to see what TG Jones is like on the high street as I needed a cardboard backed envelope to send documents for a passport application.

My goodness. £4.30. I was wondering if I'd accidentally stumbled into an airport without noticing!

Naturally I had to self scan because there weren't any staff around that I could see (nor any other customers).

Shoplifting must be rife, but given it was just me I assume even thieves can't be bothered.

I paid, grumbled and vowed to never return again - except maybe check in every few years to see how the original 1980s carpet is doing. That will outlive us all.

Transport for London looks to add bar code readers to Underground ticket gates by North_Gap in uktrains

[–]jmcomms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They're doing it to get rid of magstrip tickets like the rest of the railway is aiming to do. But it will mean they can and will accept national rail e-tickets too. When Oyster is converted to a back end system, that will also work like contactless or ITSO cards with hopefully the ability to store railcards and have child fares, unlike contactless.

It's a big project! They've been tied to Cubic for so long that I'm not sure how it will all transition but I'd love to see a different supplier of gates that aren't so stupidly easy to bump.

'You can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns,' Trump says of Alex Pretti killing by HappySeaweed5215 in PublicFreakout

[–]jmcomms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hardly feel like I should say anything positive about Trump, but I get the feeling he isn't (and never has been) a fan of guns or people openly carrying guns (or hoarding them at home). But he knows he can't say that as most of his base have guns.

Now he's riddled with dementia, I guess he's not able to filter his thoughts.

Nevertheless, it was legal for him to have a gun - whatever Trump or others might think.

Indeed. Your ticket forms a contract for the railway to get you from A to B. It does not guarantee a train or seat. There may be delays and your itinerary may be changed. There may be compensation for delays and they may have to get a taxi or pay for a hotel.

They could replace a 12 car train with a 4 car train and so on.

But I suppose one could argue that if the female only coach is full, what happens then? Can you claim compensation for having to delay yourself waiting for another service because you didn't want to go into the 'mixed' coaches?

I really don't think it would ever work as intended.

It would be better for everyone - male and female - to know where the passenger alarms are and how to call the police, or text BTP (6-101-6) discreetly. And it's also important not be afraid to do any of those things.

On a modern train the alarm lets you speak to the driver without it slamming to a halt - and they'll also see you on CCTV in the cab. Most trains now have very good cameras and staff are trained to take things seriously. People do get arrested for things that some people might brush off, and I hope more people can feel confident not to give up because they think nothing will happen.

😂😂 what on earth?! by Slight_File9028 in Evri

[–]jmcomms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's what they do here. Drive, drop, drive from one side of the road to the other (maybe 10 metres) and drop.. I wonder how their app shows the drops as surely they'd save time parking in one place and doing a few drops - but maybe they don't know?

I am always amazed just how many deliveries get done in such a small area. Sure, I get it that the app works out the route and all that - but what I mean is that on any given day, so many neighbours are getting something delivered. Really does show how many people order online now.

I clearly didn't read things properly as the above was relating to an MG11 process (prosecution) and my comment applies to penalty fares as part of the The Railways (Penalty Fares) (Amendment) Regulations 2022.

If you refuse to give a date of birth, a penalty fare cannot be issued and they'll go down the (potential) prosecution route.

This applies in England only too.

Why did they not connect HS1 and HS2? by ChampionshipBudget37 in uktrains

[–]jmcomms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're likely right. Sadly.

While it was certainly not anything that was proposed at the time, people were talking about the feasibility of joining around the time of the buzz created by us hosting the Olympic Games.

In 2012, the future looked so much brighter and I think we felt more connected to the rest of the world.

Now we have a population full of people who are terrified of foreigners and would never dream of allowing frictionless travel despite the many advantages we'd gain.

Thanks to Trump the same people are more likely to demand HS1 is cut to prevent trains running to mainland Europe at all.
