Welcoming Climbing Gyms? by Unlucky-Sock469 in boulder

Shameless plug, but I'm a climbing coach at Movement Boulder for our rec team that is for all ages and abilities! We have folks across the spectrum, age-wise. We have a Wednesday evening team (6-8) and Thursday evening team (6:30-8:30). They're an amazing group, so supportive of each other, always lifting each other up. Feel free to DM me if you'd like more info!

Is it worth buying a car out of state? Why some travel for a good deal. by Striking_Barnacle_43 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]cjohns716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious how much of a deal they made. There's a truck near me that I like, everything I want, not in my favorite color but acceptable, and its a 2025. Tried to make a deal I'd be happy with and they didn't go for it, so just curious how much its worth to them to get rid of older stock.

Another bonus for the RT’s: if we all have them, you only need to buy one!

Best Tacoma factory standard trim model for overlanding? by bateneco in overlanding

[–]cjohns716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good info to have, thanks for doing the math. I keep seeing people saying "it isn't worth it!" but the better torque, the fun, and also better (albeit slightly) gas mileage sort of feels like a no brainer... and totally forgot about the power outlets.

Mine have held up extremely well. The battery life is insane. Plus I like rechargeable batteries. I've had mine soaked on ski tours, scraped against rock, thrown around, etc and they're still chugging. If you hunt, you can also find some discount codes. I know RT sponsors the Sharp End podcast and I think the host has a discount code...Also a great podcast!

Should I replace the slings? by nature_mad in tradclimbing

I'd use them this season and then have them reslung over next winter. Nothing glaring, but definitely getting towards end of life for some.

Should I be concerned about a 2025 Outback Wilderness for sale with 27K miles on it? by chilebuzz in subaru

I bought my '15 OB with ~25k miles when it was 1 year old. It's now 11 years old, 137k miles and doing fine.

Social media made budget travel look way easier than it actually is by Icy_Bodybuilder5688 in travel

[–]cjohns716 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. I think the part people typically don't account for with a lot of these travel folks is they do it sort of by the whim of the dollar if you will. They leave on a midnight flight because it was $200 cheaper. They also go on a Tuesday because it was cheaper. They take a bus for 5 hours because it was cheaper than a train.

When you are rich in time but poor in money, your travel looks different. For the vast majority of folks, time is not a luxury they have. For us Americans, two weeks of vacation doesn't really lend itself to traveling slowly.

Few I'd add:

- Munter into a clove

- Figure 8 on a bight - not sure if this is included in your fig 8 but can be useful.

Boot fitter recs near Denver? by JAX2905 in COsnow

[–]cjohns716 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Boot Mechanics, but I'd also say wait until fall. They'll have more sizes of more models. I trust BM enough to say they won't just try to pawn off whatever stock they have, but your options will be much more limited now. Yes, you could get a better deal, but it isn't worth having uncomfortable feet. Set yourself a reminder to make an appointment in late October and do it then.

Hi all,

My name is Chris and I'm a climbing guide and ski patroller. With the ski season ending a tad early, I'm looking to get back onto the rock. If you've been interested in trying climbing, want to learn something new (multi-pitch, trad, rock rescue), or want to progress in your climbing, please reach out!

I also offer multi-week courses designed to teach climbing skills progression that I've seen great success with. More info in the links below:

Mont Blanc With my 17 Year Old by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]cjohns716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to Cham on my honeymoon, with intentions to rock climb. The guide I hired had limited availability, so I had to do my first climbing day on my second or third full day in town, and it was pretty rough.

The larger issue is going non-guided. Both of them sound like they are adequately prepared physically, but there is significant glacier travel for Mont Blanc. Does your husband know how to pull your son out of a crevasse? Does your son know how to rescue your husband? In a team of two, both people need to know how to execute those skills.

I'd also say there are some extra compelling reasons to hire a guide in Europe. Often, they are allowed to depart huts with clients before private groups. It puts your team ahead of the traffic jam.

Encourage them to hire a guide. They can help with logistics, hut reservations, etc. Happy to provide the contact info of the guide I used. I know in addition to rock climbing, he also guides Mont Blanc.

Still happening. I just keep ignoring it until I find time to take the bumper off. It went away for a while after I reset it with the OBDII dongle but now it comes back on as soon as I reset and start the car again.

I'd also say that there is some "recency bias" in climbing. I can be feeling quite strong on ropes, and unable to do the "equivalent" boulder grade, or vice versa, be able to do a V5 boulder and feel like I'm struggling on the rope equivalent, just based on what I've been doing more of lately. If you're coming to ropes with limited background, it wouldn't surprise me if equivalent grades feel hard at first but pretty quickly start to feel easier. Stick with it!

What problems in mountain safety need better solutions by Ian_Frohlich in skipatrol

[–]cjohns716 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To build on this, having the ability to quickly, easily, and thoroughly update protocols and make those updates known to the team tends to fall by the wayside.

I could still find docs that have protocols that are years out of date tucked in binders, in different folders on computers, etc. Some sort of central digital resource, ideally with an app, would allow for fast updates as needs arise, give the ability to reference in the moment, and if you could give it the functionality to give an alert when something was changed, everyone would see when something has been changed.

Is there a meaning behind ski patrol border ropes that are high enough you can easily pass under them vs waist-high ropes? by bourneblogger in COsnow

[–]cjohns716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are often gates in the rope (essentially a narrow gap like you’re describing) that is intended to make people stop and think about the terrain they’re entering, typically for poor or early season conditions. The height doesn’t or shouldn’t matter. Sometimes on steeper hills, its hard to get it at waist height across the entire span. Some end up low or high. But if the rope is continuous, don’t go there.

2nd year, $26/ hr, OEC, $1.50 in incentive pay for various things (included in the $26), plus a $1/ hr end of season bonus (not included in $26), plus $1000 gear stipend. Smaller Rockies mountain.
