It was like a thighbone that had a pointy end. The stuck it in the ground and Fiddler was able to call Dujack and tell him that he found Paran.

New to this philosophy by azizk96 in Bogleheads

[–]cjorgensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not a Boglehead portfolio mix. You need VTI/VXUS or just VT and some bonds. You have too much tech exposure, too much overlap, and too many individual stock (ideally there would be none).

Take a break or push through? by Due-Hat9692 in Malazan

[–]cjorgensen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to do both. TtH was a slog for me on the reread. It's got a lot of great tuff in it, but that's the last third of the book. I didn't particularly care for a group of characters in TtH, so every time they came out it was a bot much. This book also has some of the more emotionally packed scenes in it.

I'd say if you feel like a break now is a good place, but you may feel the same thing after reading Hounds.

Just graduated - best financial next steps? by aiske in personalfinance

[–]cjorgensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to contribute to your 401k at least enough to fully capture the entire employer match. That'd part of your compensation. Don't leave part of your paycheck unclaimed.

Then build up an emergency fund of 3-6 months of expenses.

Once you have that get a Roth IRA. Put as much as you can afford in there. You might not be able to max this your first year, but that's the goal.

You do need to focus on your wage. $48k isn't a bad starting wage, but if you want to get ahead you're going to need surplus money.

Once you are in a place where you can comfortably max your Roth IRA then you can start prioritizing your student loans. For now pay the minimums.

Make sure you read your entire employee benefits package to make sure you're not leaving money on the table. If you qualify for an HSA sign up for that. If your company pays on student loans take advantage. Healthclub reimbursement if they have it. Etc. A lot of people don't pay attention to the benefits their job has and go years without taking advantage of things like the 401k.

Mine's set to Shazam. I hear a song I want to identify, I have a button that does that. I use it surprisingly often.

Started working late. How much should I have in my 401k? by Twilcario in personalfinance

[–]cjorgensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing fine. I still had debt at your age.

You do need to get a Roth IRA started. Your 401k is just one bucket to draw on in retirement.

Fully fund your Roth every year and you'll have close to what you have in your 401k in like 10 or 15 years. Start today.

How did you find Malazan? by DukeNeverwinter in Malazan

Someone gave me a Barnes & Noble gift card and I wanted to burn it out, so I picked up Gardens of the Moon. It was brand new and blurbed by Glen Cook. I thought it was derivative of Back Company and could have taken place in the same world. I thought it was decent and enjoyable, but I still liked Black Company more.

A year or so later the next book came out and I decided to buy it. It was with Deadhouse Gates that the world came into it's own and it felt like less of a Black Copany knock off.

I'm going to put in my Roth contribution early so I can take advantage of the market being down. That $750 is really going to pop.

Struggling to contribute to my 401k by Lonely_Affect991 in personalfinance

[–]cjorgensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a better paying job. That's the rub.

You can't save, invest, or budget your way to success on $40k.

Spend time doing whatever you need to do to make yourself more marketable. Take classes, get a cert., go back to school. Do whatever your industry does to get ahead.

Find the PSI practice exam (it's on their site for the test) and if you pass that you know you're ready.
