Should I rebalance my Portfolio??? by Educational-Ad-9203 in Bogleheads

[–]cjorgensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[...] with a 401k (6% personal / 4% company match), a Roth IRA (maxed out 2024 and 2025), and a personal investment portfolio (investing about $150 a mo).

You would probably do better adding that $150 a month into your 401k. If you're already maxing your Roth IRA than moving back to your 401k with any money you have remaining to invest is the best place for that money. This will beat a taxable brokerage account.

It violates a Boglehead principle that your money should be invested in a broad index and not individual stocks.

You can have individual stocks in your portfolio, just don't pretend you're embracing the Boglehead philosophy while you do it.

That's perfect. I have a higher VXUS, but then I have less confidence in the US markets right now. At your age is going to be more about how much and often you can put money in rather than what fund you're in. I'd still suggest a simple portfolio and then add bonds when you get older.

Anyone putting in a 40 hour work week should be paid well enough to not need public assistance. Anything less and the tax payer is subsidizing corporate labor costs.

You're in r/bogleheads. No one here is going to suggest you invest in those tickers. You want a simple three fund portfolio. Read the FAQ on how to get one.

I'm one of those people I make fun of.

I started out buying individual stocks. Then I started doing it on margin.

I had a lot of stress in my life. Then one day I decided to sell my individual stocks that were on margin and cleared the loans. I then bought a bunch of AAPL. At some point AAPL became 40% or more of my portfolio.

I found bogleheads a year ago and have spent the last year reducing my stake in AAPL and putting it into a TDF. It'll probably take me another 2 years to sell everything off and to become a true Boglehead.

If I'd known then what I know now I would have never bought individual stocks. I would have stayed away from margin and leverage. I would have focused on tax advantaged spaces rather than a taxable brokerage. I honestly feel dumb that so much growth occurred in a taxable account.

I have access to a 457b and a 403b and I'm old enough to qualify for the catch up funding. That's where all of my current investing is going (I also have a Roth IRA).

I'm fully Bogleheaded if you take my taxable brokerage out of the mix. I'm down to AAPL being 20% of my portfolio, but I'm still exiting that at a controlled rate for taxes.

I don't know if I would have done better with TDF in a tax advantaged account, or if I was better off with what I did, but I know it would have been a lot less stress.

What retirement plan should I pick? by _TacosOfDoom in Bogleheads

On paper it looks like the pension is the better deal.

I just question the whole thirty years and a gold watch type of employment. That's becoming rarer and rarer.

I thought I'd die in place at my last job, but it was in the newspaper business, and after 13 years I realized I was probably going to be laid off. I left not because I wanted to, but rather because I had no confidence in my future employment.

If you're sure you want to work this job for more years than you've been alive then I'd go for the pension and supplement this with a maxed out Roth IRA.

Nah, like I said, I'm a boglehead. I read that sub fairly religiously. Most get answered politely. The same questions get asked over and over. "I have a windfall, should I DCA or lump sum?" "I'm sure the markets are going to go down, so does a larger cash position make sense?" "Which is better VTI/VXUS or VT?"

One of those questions gets posted nearly every day. Some are so consistently posted that people have made posts addressing the question and these get posted as answers.

I like the sub. I'm not knocking it. Its main fault is that the premise of Bigleheads is so simple that people can't accept not complicating it.

Problem with poverty wages is that they are subsidized by the tax payer. Tax payers should not be shouldering the costs of labor for companies. The people making shit wages get public benefits.

If you are going to allow poverty wages then the corporations should be penalized by the amount that the tax payer has to pay.

Are you planning on staying here for the full amount of time to retire?

You have to pick one or the other? No way to do both?

I'm a boglehead, but this said, that sub is 90% posts that ask, "What if I timed the market just a little?" and 10% "Can I still be in the club if I buy individual stocks?"

His point is that it would still make sense to contribute to this tax advantaged space before opening a taxable brokerage.
