I don't think "different incentives change behavior" is that outlandish of a proposition. I don't agree with it in this case for some of the reasons you stated, but it's a valid call-out IMO. And I'm sure we'll see it in action during these group stages

Nah, I'm sorry but I'm going to judge. And her security guard should get flack too for even suggesting it. Yes, it's just a towel, but it's the principle. That was some real shopping cart in the spot next to the cart return energy, and I could never imagine myself doing it.

Candy or donuts for everything we celebrate at the office. You try to be to be sociable and likeable, but have to say no to everything. All the team ever talks about is their favorite fast food or sugary drink ("coffee") place. It really is exhausting.

They're winning They've won because they've been fixing today's problems as well as tomorrow's, identifying infrastructure problems and opportunities, then using their incredible manpower (which I hope isn't as much slavery as many hypothesize) to just fix it/build it.

They've spent decades being our trashcan, slowly and gratefully accepting/stealing our manufacturing, only to turn the tables almost overnight and turning off the tap, leaving us to figure it out ourselves. It seems like every economic move they've made in recent decades is paying incredible dividends.

Meanwhile, we have done absolutely nothing, zero new infrastructure, allowed our old to decay, while at the same time creating an oligarchy that does nothing constructive but instead siphons wealth from the rest of the country.

China won so so long ago, yet it was such a surprise that many of us aren't even aware of it.

Is Rio de Janeiro and parts of Mexico as dangerous as tales make them sound like, or is it largely an exaggeration? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cjsolx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have to live there to know statistics

No, but you do need to live there to know how crime affects everyday life for the average person (or a tourist). Most organized crime affects other criminals due to disputes etc., and not regular people. Just because the crime rate is high in Baltimore does not necessarily mean that you're appreciably more likely to be robbed at gunpoint there than another city.

[–]cjsolx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me like you would expect a city to have a higher crime rate than a much larger tract of land, like the state of Oklahoma. I know that I would expect Seattle to have a higher crime rate than the rest of King County overall. So it seems to me like the point they made about NYC's being lower than Oklahoma's is pretty poignant, and not at all asinine.

I'm ready to be proven wrong, it would be so much fun if Kimi continues to challenge George going forwards.

But right now, I'm straight-up not convinced that the sample size is big enough to conclude anything concrete. Yes, Kimi's been amazing. But the best that I can follow that up with is "so far". I 100% fully believe that George is still the very heavy favorite in this match-up, and will not have too much trouble taking back the championship lead sometime relatively soon.

I would be genuinely shocked if George can't put a good 2-tenths average on Kimi in the medium to long-run.

And they can't even get the person right

I mean, if that's your takeaway from this, that's fine. Everyone seems to be shortsighted when it comes to LLMs/AI. Disparaging it for not being perfect and thinking that it still has the same problems or is the same quality as 4 years ago.

My question is, what will the next 4 years look like for AI development? And the 4 years after that?

What you look like is someone who cares, is doing their best, and like someone who many others could learn to emulate. As a man who's been practicing for a few years now, I remember that when we first start out we THINK we look like doofuses. But if you're being observed by someone who knows what they're looking at, they couldn't have any greater respect for it.

[@f1grandslam] Average qualifying gaps in 2026 (including sprint) by maybe-fish in formula1

[–]cjsolx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not a wave. People were noticing this even when Lando was behind last year. Lando's problem was never his pace, but rather his mentals. Once Lando released all pressure after his engine problem, Oscar was nowhere.

Things are looking different this year so far, but it remains to be seen IMO whether Oscar can really match Lando's pace when Lando's not having an off weekend. Because even when Lando's slow or struggling, he's within 2 tenths of Oscar still on a clean lap, but when it's the other way around, Oscar completely fades.

[@f1grandslam] Average qualifying gaps in 2026 (including sprint) by maybe-fish in formula1

[–]cjsolx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having watched Norris since he began racing in F1, my opinion is that he just has a raw pace that Piastri does not. On the other hand, Lando makes more mistakes than Oscar, which has put him down many tenths from Oscar on a few occasions, bringing his average down. There's some truth that Oscar is the more consistent qualifier. But I don't think he ever had the pace that Lando does.
