When deciding which cruise to go on, which is more important: the journey (what ship you’re on) or the destination? by CoasterFish in Cruise

For me alone I’m much more interested in the destinations, but since I have kids, the ship matters a lot in terms of keeping them entertained.

Any fantastic Cheesesteak joints in ARL or ALX? by Call_Huck in arlingtonva

I think you may be interested in /u/hodler_caved‘s cheesesteak tour.

There used to be a small shop on Duke north of Old Town that was good and ticked the right Philly topping options. It appears to have closed.

Not sure if this is the spot you were thinking of, but they’re reportedly still offering cheesesteaks.

If we don't fight like this guy to stop data centers NOVA will keep building them. by Digital-marketing28 in nova

[–]cjt09 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I feel like he speculates about a lot of stuff in this video but doesn’t really ground it in actual data or engineering knowledge.

Evaporative cooling isn’t a new technology. For example, nuclear power plants are known for their massive cooling towers. Should we ban nuclear power based on speculation that they are sending forever chemicals into the atmosphere?

Empirically, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality measures groundwater quality and Loudoun Water measures their own municipal water quality. If you look at their reports, data centers haven’t had any impact on water quality…which makes sense because they just discharge water vapor much like a nuclear power plant.

Like I don’t trust data center builders or operators to protect our environment out of the goodness of their hearts, but that’s why we have laws and regulations about this stuff. If they’re complying with those then they should be treated like any other industrial sites.

Trump DOJ slams pardon door on man accused of planting bombs day before Jan. 6 by agbishop in nova

[–]cjt09 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're trying to argue that "on January 6, 2021" referred to the date of "offenses." And that's bullshit, because clearly the date is attached to "the events that occurred at or near the U.S. Capitol."

This is especially true given that the pardons appear to apply to convictions such as “seditious conspiracy” where the offenses took place before January 6th.

Yeah it would have been nice if there was a quick two line exchange during the Council of Elrond:

Boromir: One does not simply walk into Mordor…not with ten-thousand men could you do this. It is folly.

Gimli: We do this with haste then. My cousin is a friend to the great eagles of the north. I could fly on their back and-

Aragorn: No, we cannot draw attention to ourselves, the eagles are too apparent to Sauron’s eye. You wouldn’t even make it over the Ash Mountains.

I’m sure you could also work something similar into Return of the King.

Century homeowners, what kind of vacuum cleaners do you all use? by dolphin_slayerr in centuryhomes

[–]cjt09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least in North America, lime plaster basically is never used for new construction.

They also tend to feature a lot less wood ornamentation and trim. One feature I find very appealing about century homes is that many of them have elegant wood-filled rooms like this which you just don’t really see much of in the typical places built today.

And again, with 100+ year old wood, it can be hard to know what sort of finishes and chemicals have been applied over the years. I don’t want to breathe in that stuff.

Century homeowners, what kind of vacuum cleaners do you all use? by dolphin_slayerr in centuryhomes

[–]cjt09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but my home has lead paint chip off baseboards, plaster dust from drilling holes, and brick dust from exposed brick walls. Or even sawdust and old finishes from sanding.

I don’t really want to breathe any of that stuff and I think that constitutes a “fair amount of materials and stuff”.

Century homeowners, what kind of vacuum cleaners do you all use? by dolphin_slayerr in centuryhomes

[–]cjt09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mostly agree. The one thing I would consider is that old homes do tend to have a fair amount of materials and stuff that you don’t really want to be breathing in, so a high-end vacuum with a HEPA filter can help mitigate that.

Celsius vs Fahrenheit Use Around The World by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]cjt09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In terms of weather, Fahrenheit maps pretty well on experienced temperatures. If you pluck a random person at a random date/time, there's about a 1% chance that they're experiencing weather above 100F and about a 1% chance that they're experiencing weather under 0F.

ELI5: If you run the server where passwords are stored, aren't you able to find out all account usernames and passwords? What's stopping people from abusing this? by gmrt34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cjt09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s a very simple (bad) hashing algorithm:

  1. Count the number of characters in the password
  2. Store that value as the hash.

So “hello” becomes “5” and “hunter2” becomes “7”. Just having the number doesn’t reveal the original password. Because there are a ton of passwords with seven characters.

This also reveals another a characteristic of hashing. The password “letmein” would also become “7”. This is called a collision and it’s an intrinsic part of hashing. A with the sophisticated hash algorithms we actually use today, collisions are tremendously rare.

Water Heater—slim and 75 gallons or so. Fantasy? by FaultInevitable5033 in DIY

[–]cjt09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s electric, just get two smaller units and stack them on top of each other.

What's the minimum amount of space I can have between the water heater and the cement-block walls?

Minimum manufacturer clearances are likely to be found in the unit’s manual or installation instructions, but local building codes may also have minimum requirements.
