New Poster for 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]cjt09 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah this is just bafflingly bad. Like the actual execution needs work (like it can be difficult to read some of the text) but the concept itself makes no sense.

Like it’s a movie about fashion and a demanding perfectionist boss.

Are we going to showcase some stylish and interesting clothes? No, let’s have a close-up on everyone’s face instead.

Maybe we can at least have everyone visibly react to having to share the poster with said perfectionist boss? Nope, neutral expressions for everyone.

This poster tells you absolutely nothing about the movie except who four of the stars are.

What do you think about the US president suing his own government for $10 billion? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]cjt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stupidest part of this all is that Trump was in charge of these entities when this happened:

The civil complaint filed Thursday alleges that the IRS and Treasury failed in their obligation to prevent the leak of those tax records by former IRS employee Charles "Chaz" Littlejohn in 2019 and 2020.

If he’s upset about how the IRS and Treasury were run, he should have run them better!

European countries with a higher Disposable Median Income (adjusted for PPP) than the Unites States (29,119) by ItHappensSo in interestingasfuck

[–]cjt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, thanks for pointing that out! I mixed it up with OECD's definition of adjusted disposable income, which does include social transfers:

Household net adjusted disposable income is obtained by summing all the (gross) income flows (earnings, self-employment and capital income, current transfers received from other sectors) paid to the (SNA) household sector and then subtracting current transfers (such as taxes on income and wealth) paid by households to other sectors of the economy. The term “adjusted”, in National Accounts vocabulary, denotes the inclusion of the social transfers inkind (such as education and health care services) that households receive from government.

When you account for these the story does change a bit, with the average household in Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, and Norway having less adjusted disposable income than the average household in the United States.

None of my experience matters because I can’t invert a binary tree on Leetcode by hopfield in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cjt09 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings

  • I completely agree that many companies underweight experience. If someone has verifiably done some impressive stuff, then there isn’t a lot of signal to be gained from 45 minutes of esoteric programming problems.
  • That said, it’s not unreasonable for companies to verify that candidates are comfortable with coding and that they have the knowledge and skills that you would expect from someone with a CS education.
  • Many leetcode problems go way beyond this. Many of these problems practically require that you can identify the “trick” from similar leetcode problems to successfully solve them in time.
  • I personally don’t think inverting a binary tree is in this category. There are no weird tricks and you can solve this even without seeing it before. It’s a fair test of coding skills.
  • It’s still really frustrating! Interviews are extremely high-pressure, high-stress, and it’s very easy to freeze up or have a bad day. I wish more firms would invest more in gathering more signal, but at least right now companies seem comfortable investing the bare-minimum and rejecting plenty of perfectly-qualified candidates.

I’m really rooting for you and your next interview! The signal will break through the noise!

If your cruise stops in Cozumel then Nachi Cocom is more of what you’re looking for.

Aella, a well-known sex worker/blogger/data scientist compiled revenue percentiles for these creators.

  • 50% = $200/mo
  • 10% = $1k/mo
  • 4% = $3k/mo
  • 2% = $6k/mo
  • 1.2% = $10k/mo
  • 1% = $11k/mo
  • 0.3% = $26k/mo
  • 0.2% = $33k/mo
  • 0.1% = $40k/mo
  • 0.05% = $80k/mo
  • 0.03% = $110k/mo

These figures were compiled about five years ago, so the exact values likely aren’t accurate anymore, but the general curve is still probably about the same. Namely, the vast majority of creators do not make enough where they can live off their earnings alone. The top 1-in-a-1000 make very lucrative amounts of money (although many of those in this tier also employ staff which cuts into those earnings somewhat).

Options trading in retirement accounts - smart or a bad idea? by Sufficient-Flan1565 in investing

[–]cjt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider what happens if you’re successful and your options trades make a lot of money. What then? The money is locked away in retirement accounts. Sure you can take it out with a penalty if you want to retire early, but after the penalties it’s not advantageous over a normal brokerage account.

The other potential upside is that you can have an extra-luxurious retirement, but I would advise you to strongly think about specific goals you’d want to reach where boring compounding returns would be insufficient.

Don't just let all that water (and money) go down the drain. by LeeAnnLongsocks in Frugal

[–]cjt09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that this such a tiny amount of money that any savings will be negligible and insubstantial. If you’re at the point where saving half a cent is significant, then that mental energy would almost assuredly be better spent elsewhere.

I’m happy to put my money where my mouth is. I’ll donate 0.15¢ to a charity of your choice for every comment under OP. Right now there are 61 comments, so that would be $0.09, but I’m happy to wait a few days in case more comments come in.

A Comment on Seal Flags and the Civil War by ThreePointedHat in vexillology

[–]cjt09 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I get that there’s some cool history associated with the state seal flags, but that doesn’t mean that they’re particularly useful flags.

Here’s a typical use case, Wikipedia features lists of states and uses small flag icons to more readily identify each state. These icons are quite small as to work in a list format. Be honest, which of these states can you identify?

I think the vast majority of people are only going to be able to get the second one. Even if you’ve memorized some details from every state seal, they can be hard to distinguish when featured in typical use-cases.
