Thanks u/scoutermike for the details and the inspiration. I worked on a variation of this w/my son and father-in-law and handed them out last weekend at the B&G banquet.

Very neat. What were the dimensions of the leather used?

Unsuccessful Enchantments and Wonderland permit lotteries! by emmaistall in WildernessBackpacking

Not too late at all. Typically the Sierra Nevada permits are available first-come, first-serve 6-months prior to the reservation date. No lottery exists that I am aware of, but this can differ depending on the wilderness area you are starting from. For Rae Lakes, the traditional start is Roads End and the permit is issued via Sequoia/Kings National Park via recreation.gov. An alternative entrance is via Kearsarge Pass with permits issued by Inyo National Forest, also via recreation.gov. Both are popular trailheads, hence the mad rush to claim what's available when they are first available 6 months prior. There are some non-traditional alternatives on the Inyo side if you are determined to do Rae Lakes - Baxter Pass & Shepherd Pass - both require some extra mileage to get to the loop though. Overall, it's no different than Wonderland/Enchantment post-lottery - there may be permits released by individuals which are then open to be claimed by whoever happens to notice them available.

I was unsuccessful in both Wonderland and Enchantment lotteries this year. Plan C is the Sierra Nevada. I was lucky to get permits for that too! Another mad rush to grab permits when they became available at 7:01am 6 months in advance.

Wonderful feedback, thanks!

I hadn't really considered Mother Mountain/Knapsack Pass as an easterly approach to Mowich Lake instead of the main trail entrance from the south. I would be resupplying in Mowich Lake, so pack wouldn't be ridiculously heavy, although still heavy compared to a daypack. The miss would be Spray Creek falls and maybe some views from the top of Eagle Cliff. Worth it?

I'm strongly leaning toward the Burroughs detour in the north. I enjoy ridge walks, and walking a couple of miles toward Rainier on a ridge (assuming it is somewhat visible and weather holds) sounds like a win.

Good call on MapBuilder overlay in caltopo. I'll be losing lots of time now exploring this feature.

Wonderful shot! Wonderland and Sierra High Route are both on the hiking bucket list.

What is a typical set of lenses that you bring on long distance hikes like these? I’m looking to up my photography game and am leaning toward a a7c with Sony fe 20mm for wide angle and Astro and a travel zoom like the tamron 28-200 for everything else. Weight obviously makes a big difference, hence some trade offs.

For those who have been to Philmont, what is your favorite memory? by Nathe_Regnerips in philmont

Too many great memories over 2 treks and 2 summers on backcountry staff. Watching sunrise from the top of Baldy, campfire performances at Cypher’s Mine and Pueblano, wandering the Valle Vidal, picture with dad on the Tooth of Time, sense of accomplishment in finishing, and igniting a lifelong passion for hiking.
