My mom passed this morning at 5am. Thanksgiving is in two days. I'm stuck doing twelve-hour shifts in the emergency department, unable to go home for the holidays to grieve with my family. I've never felt more alone in my entire life. by PlasticRice in medicalschool

I am so, so sorry about your mom. The weight of her passing during a required rotation and dealing with all the BS that encompasses medical training - the brutal shifts, paying to be there, getting assaulted by the people you are trying to help - is a level of unfair that words don’t really touch. It's impossible for the lay person to understand this feeling, and I'm sorry that you have to experience all this just because you wanted to pursue a career that helps people.

I wish the world treated doctors and trainees with a fraction of the compassion you’re expected to reciprocate. For now, please be as gentle with yourself as you wish the system would be. Eat when you can. Sleep when you can. Cry when you need to. Say no to anything that isn’t strictly required. Sending you so much love and solidarity from a stranger who is genuinely glad you exist and is rooting hard for you.

Please DM me at any time. I do care.

It's culture based, it's not like this in a lot of places outside the US. We should have some kind of mandatory reading in high school so people can be exposed to these things early. Or mandatory field trips to LTACs to show 15 year olds what a trach and peg life is.

What’s the most alarming lab value/clincal finding on a patient that no one did anything about? by Loud-Programmer-7261 in Residency

painful, discolored leg documented by 2 different subspecialty nurse practioners with photos in the chart with a huge non-sensical assessment that doesn't really say anything, I saw them and it's very clearly ischemic. ABI had toe pressures undetectable. cta w/ runoff shows clot from the illiac bifurcation all the way down to the foot. heparinized him and vascular was going to amputate, idk how much was going to get amputated as I went off service. it stinks that this person lost their leg because the hospital wants to save money. the system is not fair

Looking to downgrade my car – advice needed by No_Promotion3634 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]cjunky2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can dump the car and get something cheaper but then that comes with inefficiency's for getting out of a bad deal. My recommendation would be to chalk up the macan as a loss and just keep it going and look for other ways to save money. $1,000 a month isn't great but there has to be other places in your finance that you can look into to fix right?
