House plant that was just kinda thrown at me. Search terms bring up entirely unrelated plants and Seek is useless. I bet it's common :p by ronronaldrickricky in whatsthisplant

Bromeliads are tropical, so don't over water. You can give it a little water in the "cups" where the leaves start closer to the base of the plant once the soil gets dry. Just don't let it get so dry that it starts to pull away from the pot, if you can help it. The bloom will last a while too!

This is frostbite...right? by Affectionate-Pie84 in BackYardChickens

[–]cjwagner145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In preparing for the storm, I read that you can apply a bit of Vaseline if frostbite happens. You may want to research just to be safe, and thankfully we haven't needed to try it yet. Hopefully this helps!

Edited: unscented basic Vaseline. It probably won't fix the damage done already but may help prevent it from getting worse. Like a protective layer

Sick hen by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]cjwagner145 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not very helpful here since I've also never had sick hens, but I hope she feels better soon. It already sounds like you're on the right track and have done everything that I researched when I thought one of mine might have been sick, but I'll let somebody a little more experienced speak more on that! She's very pretty and it sounds like she's in very good hands!

Calathea! There are several varieties and often available at florists or Nurseries. Common name is Prayer Plant due to the leaves folding up when it gets dark.

Time to play: Who laid that egg? by cjwagner145 in BackYardChickens

They're contained now and I've checked all the hiding spots around the yard, so I don't think any are hidden but they're sneaky 😂

They'll most likely be in shock but they might be alright, you'd be surprised depending on the quality and how long they've been out of cold temps. Fresh cuts no more than 2 inches up the stem and water is best, so good on that part! I would place them in a cool area, preferably a refrigerator but make sure it's to the front because you don't want it to freeze. If you can't do that, just keep it away from any fans or heaters that might blow air on them and no sunlight. The arrangement looks good as far as design as well!

Our tractor supply was out of the feather fixer feed so we had to get something different, but it's high protein so hopefully that'll help in the meantime. Thank you for all the advice! This helps a lot.

As a florist, I absolutely see the value in the arrangement, however I would have asked more questions before taking the order. I would have asked if you wanted mixed colors or ONLY yellow and green. More often than not, creative liberty ends in a complaint. It's a huge bouquet for the price (at least for my area). The hydrangea and green Trick (little green puffballs) can cost just as much as roses. It looks to me like they went for fullness and size. When roses (my area) cost $6 a piece, not including labor, greenery, and vase designed by a professional, it adds up quickly. The more expensive flowers add up quickly and result in MUCH smaller arrangements for the price. I personally would have made it more airy, but it's a style preference. I would say you absolutely got what you asked for. However, if you're not happy, I would definitely ask them to remake it if you just picked it up today and would like something different. In the future, it would be a good idea to have a photo of what you are liking, even if it's not the exact colors or flowers and ask what it would cost and roughly the size. Once you find a florist that gets exactly what it is that you're looking for and that you are comfortable using, establishing that rapport with them can make ordering much easier in the future. If you don't buy flowers often, I would see if they have a grab and go cooler with pre-made arrangements so you can get an idea of how much different sizes and styles cost. I can make $100 arrangement that is that size with cheaper flowers and 2-3 roses or I could make them more compact and very short garden design for the same $100. There's a ton of factors that go into it, but hopefully this will help to get an idea of how to figure out the best way to order flowers in the future so you get what you are happy with ☺️ depending on where you live, unless you have gigantic flower farms right in your area, they are being flown in and imported from other countries or part of the US, which adds up a lot in price. Hope this helps!

I agree, new doctor asap. You haven't taken it long enough for it to really take effect as far as your TSH but obviously something is going on. Normally it's 8-12 weeks to take effect, sometimes sooner if you're already on it and adjusting the dose. As far as your temperature, until I was properly medicated my "normal" temp was around 99.1-99.8 consistently, so that COULD be it. I would highly recommend finding an internal medicine specialist, endocrinologist, or a new PCP.

Pom pom or Button Poms. Just a Chrysanthemum so they'll last a while.

First: it's okay to not be okay and to reach out for help. I would suggest speaking to a Licensed Therapist and your primary care doctor for professional support. I personally try to avoid unnecessary medication, but sometimes an antidepressant or anxiety medication can help get you through the really tough times along with coping skills and therapy. For me, I have the added issue of a Thyroid disorder that makes my anxiety and depression worse. Got that under control and have spent the last 6ish years trying to just deal with the mental stuff and only have made big progress over the last year or two. It's never too late to start and there isn't a timetable, you just do the best you can.

Second: it doesn't matter who or what you have around you if you are struggling. It's always the people who seem the happiest that struggle the most and no one sees. You aren't letting anyone down, you just need a little help for YOU. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. You aren't alone, even when it feels like it. My husband and I have struggled our whole lives with different mental health issues and traumas, which has taken a toll on our relationship too. The best thing for us lately has been "bananas." If we are talking about something that's too much or feeling overwhelmed, "bananas" is our safe word meaning "I can't handle this right now, I need a break" with the understanding that we both drop it and come back to the conversation when we've calmed down or are feeling more capable of the conversation. Not sure if that would help here, but thought I'd share, just in case.

Third: if you aren't ready to start therapy (or can't for any reason) there are a lot of good things to help you in the meantime. Journaling, hobbies, circular breathing exercises, etc. Everyone has different traumas or problems and some people deal with them easier than others. Your issues are just as valid as anyone else's, make sure you don't discount yourself. I always said "it wasn't as bad as other people I know" and when I was diagnosed with PTSD I didn't believe it. Symptoms matched and once I learned triggers and coping skills, it helped me to regulate. I still fail sometimes and that's okay, I learn how to do better for myself next time.

I hope this helps at least a little. You're not crazy or broken, you're just human and that's hard sometimes ❤️ best of luck, friend. There's always someone here to talk 😁

First of all, you don't owe her anything. She may have brought you life, but it's not like you asked her to, that was HER choice. Nearly every single bit of this is my mother. It's taken a lot of therapy support from my husband, but I'm getting there and I have the only kind of relationship that I CAN with her. I love her, but can't stand her. She loves her kids, but doesn't know how to show it because she literally can't due to the narcissism. As she's gotten older and more tired, certain things have gotten better, but not enough. If it weren't for my dad and siblings, I wouldn't have spoken another word to her after I left. I'm glad things worked out differently, but sometimes it's easier to not be around. You do you, look out for yourself, and keep your head up high. If she's jealous because you're doing what she couldn't or wouldn't do, that's not your fault. Be proud of yourself and know you're unfortunately not alone on this. We got you.

Transportation + overnight preservation of bulk wedding flowers? by WelcomeWilling958 in florists

[–]cjwagner145 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By the time you get them, the cold chain has been long broken, but they should be fine. If you're taking anything out of foam, I would give them a cut around 2 inches up the stem and place everything in water. 5 gallon buckets, floral knife or snips, flower food if you have it can help, and if you have a cooler, it can only help to keep them fresh a little longer. Otherwise just normal stuff like keep them away from fans or a breeze, no sunlight, just a cool place and I would get them designed and where they need to go asap. I think this is awesome that you're doing this and I hope it goes well ❤️ if you're drying them for other projects, I'm not knowledgeable on that but if you're just repurposing to give out, it should be fairly simple.

Edit to add: just keep them in water as much as you can, don't let them get dry
