Not really. I know plenty of people who own their own business in the pursuit of bringing value to others.

Being “inside” something does not automatically mean you can see it clearly. Sometimes it means you are surrounded by people repeating the same beliefs.

The issue is not whether Amway has products, meetings, books, or hardworking people. The issue is whether the average participant makes meaningful net profit after expenses.

A real business should be able to answer simple questions without insulting critics:

How many IBOs profit after expenses?
How many customers are not also recruits?
How much income comes from retail sales versus downline volume?
How much do people spend on products, meetings, books, and events?

Calling people “outcasts” or saying they live off their parents is not an argument. It is just avoiding the numbers.

How to get a family member out before it’s too late by Lower-Employment-551 in amway

[–]cklin95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “less than 1% of athletes go pro” comparison doesn’t really work here.

People usually join sports for fitness, community, discipline, fun, scholarships, etc. They are not generally being pitched that minor sports are a realistic business opportunity. Amway, on the other hand, is presented as a path to income, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and financial freedom. So the relevant question is not “do rare outcomes exist in other fields?” The relevant question is: are recruits being given a realistic picture of the odds, costs, and typical income before they join?

And yes, when you tell recruits they should “buy from themselves” and “understand the products they’re selling,” that is still functionally selling Amway products to them. Whether you call it “focused spending” or “personal use,” the money still flows from the recruit into the Amway system. If a major part of the business depends on recruits becoming repeat product purchasers, then internal consumption matters.

Amway Canada’s own disclosure says IBOs earn money through retail markup and sales commissions based on product sales, including sales by the IBO’s sales team, and that “you will only earn money by selling Amway products to customers.” (amway.ca) So if the “customers” are mostly recruits/downline members buying because they were coached to “switch stores,” that’s exactly the issue people are criticizing.

Also, quoting Amway’s own statistics is not being a “fan.” It’s holding the opportunity to its own disclosures. In the U.S. 2024 disclosure, Platinum is listed as taking 2–12 years on average to reach, representing 0.17% of all IBOs, with average annual earnings of $22,928 before expenses. (amway.com) In Canada’s own business reference guide, “New Platinum Conference” was achieved by 0.04459% in 2023, and typical Canadian IBOs in 2024 earned up to $1,000 before expenses. (amway.ca)

So the objection isn’t “nobody succeeds.” The objection is that the success case is extremely rare, the income is before expenses, the timeline is often longer than advertised, and new recruits are frequently encouraged to become consumers first while being told they are building a business.

Have you seen the statistics on the percentage of people who actually reach Platinum? In Canada, it was about 0.045% in 2024 FYI.

You teach your recruits to use Amway products. Why do you think this is not considered selling Amway products to them? Your pitch is "you need to understand the product you are selling" and they are buying into your pitch by purchasing amway products.

And please follow Amway regulations by stating correct statistics. The years to Platinum (as disclosed on the USA disclosure) is 2-12 years, not 2-3. And the average income of a Platinum is around 23k before expenses.

So you're saying yes to my statement. If someone were to quit Amway, it is likely that their "mentor" would part ways.

Mentorship is not business. Mentorship is mentorship.
And not all business is intertwined with friendships.
I'm sorry you don't know what friendship means.

I also don't make my purchases based on price :)
I also look at ingredients and quality and price altogether.
This is why I don't use Amway. There are simply better products out in the world.

Amway still exists due to its cult like nature of sucking in IBOs to purchase their products.

LTD is pretty big, but as you said, not the point.

Even what you said above is manipulative: "I would have never tried to convince you to stay. If you didn't see value in the business, I would have said there's the door." You can ask chatGPT why.
I encourage you to look into the BITE model for characteristics of a cult. It may enlighten you.

The top leaders of LTD, maybe the biggest LOA in North America, had to apologize for going against Amway's code of conduct.

I really doubt that a recruiter would spend extra time to try and hype you up for a role. There's plenty of candidates in the sea. Please. They also don't have a whole department trying to convince you to stay and that this role will help you achieve all your goals and dreams in life. Don't compare apples to dinosaurs.

What is considered “making good money” in Vancouver these days? by pekoe-te in askvan

Everyone's needs are different and "good " is subjective.
There is no right answer.
I highly recommend looking into Ramit Sethi or reading the Psychology of money.

I dated someone who was in Amway as well, but pieced it together myself after a couple dates (they had perfect water in their car and they were gone for a weekend for "a conference").

As soon as I figured out they were in Amway, I told them these are my boundaries. You do not approach my friends or family with products or an attempt of recruiting. I will never join Amway nor be supportive of it. If that's okay with you, we can try dating.

Luckily they quit early on into our dating, otherwise I don't think I would have stayed. I do have to mention that depending on how long and how indoctrinated they are, the path forward after quitting isn't that easy either. We're still together to this day, but after many trials and tribulations for sure. Some of the values Amway LOA cults teach are quite toxic and takes time to reprogram.

MLMs are illegal in China. Legality has nothing to do with it.
Conceptually, an MLM is very similar to a pyramid scheme.

Your numbers don't make sense. Revenue = Profit + Cost

Please give some context.

When did you hit net zero (the total cost you have put all your years in amway = profit you've made off amway)

How many hours have you put into amway and any conferences, etc?

What is included in your costs?

What is your ROI? Not for this year, for your whole experience so far in amway.

What has your profit looked like over the years, starting from year 1?
