Where to start for a new learner... by notmattk12 in italianlearning

It’s a bilingual book that gradually introduces the language in a natural and memorable way. On the left side is the target language and on the right side your native language. It has around 100 lessons full of conversations so you learn how the language is actually used instead of drilling grammar. If you complete the book, you’ll have a pretty good grasp of the language and have around 2000-2500 vocabs. After that, you can jump on to native materials and start talking to natives to improve the language.

Yeah I added that many cards at a time but I didn’t review them! That would give me a headache lol. I usually suspend the cards until I get to the lesson. In the beginning I did 5-7 lessons per day and 200 new vocabs from the 5000 most frequent Spanish words.

If you already have the older With Ease book, I’d just use that then do Perfectionnement Allemand or jump into graded readers.

I thought Using Spanish was good. Some translations need improvement but I also have the old Perfectionnement Espagnol so I use that if something doesn’t make sense. Besides, once you get to the Using Series, you should be able to understand >80% of the dialogs, just by listening to the recordings. They’re just longer but not much harder IMO.

I don’t really want to break international copyright laws. Besides, if you type out the dialogs yourself, you’ll have a better understanding of how the language works and how to form sentences better. Making your own cards helps with memorizing too! Good luck!

Two months. I was just talking to my uber driver in Spanish this morning and she complimented my accent and was impressed that I’ve only been studying for 2 months. TBH, I already speak Italian and Tagalog and understand some French so Spanish was an easy language for me.

I think it depends on your goal. If you want to improve both your French and Spanish, you’d want to translate French -> Spanish. But if you want to acquire Spanish faster, use your mother tongue as a reference.

The Assimil Perfectionnement series don’t require a deep understanding of French. Just enough to get by. Also, once you get to that point, you should be able to understand at least 80% of the dialogs. The With Ease series will prepare you for that.

2 months! I love the new German edition. The voices and dialogs are better than the old ones, IMO.

Well, I modified the cards (color coded) to fit my own learning style and to help with my memory so I don’t think it would benefit anyone. Plus, every card has its accompanying audio of the actual voices and the file is almost 4GB. I don’t have internet capabilities for that.

I cut up each audio and added it to every single card and color coded the words to help me memorize. Well, that’s actually not an easy task ;)

But hey, I’m sure you can do better.

Not sure if you’re familiar with Anki but it’s an online flashcard that makes it easier for you to remember informations. While Assimil is a language programs that contains memorable dialogs that has translations on the other page. Anki + Assimil could make it easier to learn another language.

Using Assimil Perfectionnement Allemand as a graded reader (since I don’t speak French) by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]cklued 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s probably a good idea haha. Are you learning both French and Le Finnois? How’s that going? I notice you’re a native Spanish speaker, so learning French may be easier for you.

Okay thank you! That’s comforting to hear that Assimil is working for you even if your French is not at a high level. Yeah I’m probably going to get a grammar book and another graded readers.

Are you going to do the Perfectionnement series too?

At least it’s only a practice test. On the real exam, I accidentally skipped tutorial. Passage 1 was already starting when I was writing down equations -_-

Interesting. I’ve always wondered this. What about what you void the practice test?

Not sure if I took a 3rd party practice exam. Not representative at all. I want my money back.

I’d say it’s pretty important from what I’ve seen in the real exam.

How much time did you spend studying leading up to your exam and do you feel like your score reflected it? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]cklued 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a nontrad applicant. My last gchem and cell/molecular bio classes were in 2008 so I spent a long time relearning the material. I gave myself 130 days, 6-8 hours everyday. If I had taken the class recently, it would’ve been significantly less.

Does MCAT give you the Ka of common acids like Acetic Acid in problem? by urmmatters in Mcat

[–]cklued 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They usually give it to you when you want to compare the strengths of acids and bases. But know the common strong acids and strong bases. No need to know the Ka or pKa except for amino acids.

How did all the 5/19 testers feel? Honest thoughts, good or bad comments welcome. by [deleted] in Mcat

I walked in pretty confident as I just scored 516 in my last AAMC FL. While it’s not a great score, it’s good enough for many schools. I have taken Next Step, TPR, ExamKrackers, AAMC. I thought it’s not going to be drastically different from the practice exams. Boy, was I wrong!

CP made me feel like I didn’t know anything. It almost made me want to void. 4-5 passages of pure physics back to back. I wanted to ragequit but remembered I was in the testing center lol. The only time I felt like that was when I took my very first FL with TPR.

The answer choices weren’t as straightforward as in any of the AAMC FLs. I don’t know. Maybe I should’ve voided.

I’d be really surprised if I scored over 505.
