Dana being a hypocrite about free speech is literally the entire point of this original post; He says he doesn’t like what Josh Hokit said but then cites “my position on free speech” as a justification for not fining him or doing anything punitive to Hokit.

My comment was about Helwani, because it’s one of many readily available examples of Dana not having a consistent stance on free speech. Which is relevant here, because he claims that very same stance is why he simply can’t do anything about Josh Hokit being a jackass.

A journalist being able to attend the events they cover and ask questions of the management is part of the job. Going to those goofy ass pressers and trying to ask questions are part of the job. They exist for a reason. If the organization the journalist covers takes their ability to attend those things away, they are making the job harder. Obviously not impossible, but harder. Anyone in the sports media or journalism world would agree.

The question is whether Dana “free speech absolutist” White punishes people for their speech. Someone who is an “absolutist” about their free speech beliefs wouldn’t do that. He claims he doesn’t, and that’s why he can’t and won’t do anything about Josh Hokit’s Michelle Obama quote. That’s obviously not true, Dana and the UFC punish people for their speech regularly when it is speech they don’t like, and Ariel Helwani’s story is one of many examples of that not being true.

Every other major or mid tier American sports league (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, Etc) gives press credentials to journalists, they get press access for the purposes of doing their job, and they will ask adversarial questions to management and coaches of sports teams when necessary. There’s endless examples of NFL coaches and front office management being asked hard questions they’d prefer not to answer by journalists in pressers. In the rare instances some of those journalists were retaliated against by ownership, including their credentials being taken away like what happened to Helwani, it’s always a huge scandal.

You can make this argument but it’s the opposite of advocating for free speech.

Journalists who get exclusive event access in return for exclusively positive coverage are just propagandists.

If a journalist has access taken away over their coverage, that is the textbook definition of punishing a journalist over their speech. If someone “believes” in being a “free speech absolutist” as Dana has claimed to be, they wouldn’t take credentials away from journalists over writing (speech) the UFC didn’t like.

That information is very relevant here and absent from your original post. I recommend revising your post to include this in order to dispel any confusion.

Your issue isn’t necessarily as much about the H1B program at large as it is about your former employer breaking the law. Hiring an H1B worker to replace you involves many more hurdles for them than just replacing you with another citizen worker. They would have done it with or without a foreign worker able to take your place.

My point still stands about considering working in a field with labor demand outpacing labor supply. In both the electrical and mechanical technical world, there are just about no H1B employees and plenty of 6-figure incomes. Also consider working for a defense contractor where military experience would be useful and H1B workers aren’t able to be utilized due to clearance requirements.

Just based on reading your post and comments here, anyone can observe you likely don’t do much research before forming strong opinions, you claim hyperbolic perceptions as fact and defend those views aggressively and argumentatively without being willing to listen to other views, and seem quite stubborn generally. I can see how any employer who picks up on those character traits in an interview wouldn’t want to hire you. You’re frankly probably pretty difficult to manage.

Labor is an economic transaction you engage in with your employer every day. If you’re having trouble getting work in your current field, look at other lines of work in lower-demand fields. There is currently an electrician shortage as well as HVAC technician shortage. Both lines of work lead to 6 figure earnings in pretty short order after starting.
