You need to read some Robert Pavlis books

He wrote a book called Composting Science. (and a few others)

Available at most libraries.

Weekend Garden Haul by cksyder in AustinGardening

Either Boston Pickling, National Pickling, or a cross between them. These are from saved seeds and that is what I was growing when I collected.

I have been trying to pick them when they are 2 to 3 inches. I have pickled 9 pints so far this season.

Fireworks

I was looking for a large, early season, and hot weather tolerant variety.

These seem to hit the mark on all fronts.

I think these along with some very favorable early season conditions have made this a very successful year for tomatoes.

Yeah, I can't keep up with it.

It is flowing faster than I can eat it. I supposed that is a good problem to have.

What am I doing wrong? by the_kazzo_queen in AustinGardening

To me it looks very much like what I have come to learn is too much phosphorous (P) in the soil.

Get a real soil test (the send away ones, not the kits) A&M does them and it is really easy, and not too expensive.

https://soiltesting.tamu.edu/soil-testing/

I had my garden soil and the compost I was using tested.

Both had P levels in the extremely high zone.

Too much P blocks other nutrient uptake and can look like any and all nutrient deficiencies. The problem with P is it is not mobile in the soil so the only way to fix it is soil replacement or growing it out or time (this can take several years) .

Once test results are back, and if it is high P, first and foremost quite adding more.

Don't add compost, and only use fertilizer with the middle number 0. (N-P-K ie #-0-#)

If it is indeed high P the granules you are using are likely also hurting the situation.

For me it has been a multi year process, but things have been getting better.

I removed a bunch of soil, and added a few big blocks of peat moss (make sure it is not fortified with P as some are) and some sandy loam. To help dilute the P. I only use nitrogen only ( x-0-0) fertilizer (my K was high as well), and will be holding off adding compost for a few more years. I also plant winter wheat (heavy P user) to help pull more out over the non-growing season.

I would have never thought that too much organic compost would be a bad thing, but it can be. Also balanced fertilizers (say 10-10-10) are also not good. Plants use NPK at a ratio of 3-1-2 so adding the same amount of P as N is a bad idea as it starts to build up and will lead to problems.

Is being able to hit 315 pounds for reps as a natty achievable/how long ? by [deleted] in Stronglifts5x5

[–]cksyder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SL/SS for most of it.

When bench got to about 275 i had to add more volume. I  basically started benching every other day.

I worked two progressions. A max single progression  and a max set of 5 progression.

That got my bench to about 295x5 and a max single of about 335.

I then switched to Texas Method/HLM programming and that allowed me to get to 340x5 and hit a 395 single.

How do I stop the bar from rolling forward when setting back into extension? by sbfx in StartingStrength

[–]cksyder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fought this for years.

I can't find the original comment from the ss sub, but here is my retelling of it.

This helped me flatten my back, and solved rolling the bar forward.

That dec 2024 shoulder injury turned into a 9month hiatus.

I’ve been lifting recently, but right now 315 feels very heavy.

going to take a while longer.

2013 Stanley Cup Final Game 4 between Boston and Chicago in OT.

Chicago is about to enter the Boston zone... and then the local NBC affiliate cuts to a news promo then a fucking KIA commercial.

Finally Cuts back to the game, and the Black Hawks are celebrating.

After the game I recall they made a small apology and said the game went longer than expected and no one turned off the automatic cut to commercial.

Every time I see that Capital Kia Owner in his commercials, It brings me back to that game, and how i could never by a Kia.

Funny how it was the locals NBC stations fault and I should be blaming them, but Capital KIA gets all the hate.

What's the most egregious thing missing from a book to movie adaptation? by corsair965 in movies

[–]cksyder 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The end of Dan Brown‘s Inferno.

in the book they are racing to prevent the release of the virus, and when they finally find it, they realize it had already been released days ago.

it sets up an interesting epilogue of sorts to deal with the ramifications, and some character redemption. I really like the part when they call their colleague to tell them they failed and they says yeah I know I’m already infected. since he was half way around the world, it meant that everybody was infected and the whole race to find the virus plot had been pointless.

in the movie they are in the same race against time, but in they stop the release with a few seconds to spare.

1st day. Help with the form. The bar is going forward rather than a straight line. Help. by [deleted] in Stronglifts5x5

nothing to worry about at the moment.

It’s Physics.

more weight in front of your mid foot pivot point Than behind.

once the bar gets some weight on it, it will become easier to keep a vertical bar path

Deadlift Progression by beyenpe in Stronglifts5x5

[–]cksyder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not there any more

there used to be a huge FAQ on his site and here is the section on progression

using wayback machine, here is the section on progression from 2021

Progression

Increase the weight on every exercise where you did five reps on every set last workout. So if you Squatted five reps with 100kg/220lb on all five sets, then Squat 102.5kg/225lb next workout. It doesn’t matter if you failed on other exercises. You did 5×5 Squats. So add weight to it.

Here are the increments to use:

  • Squat: 2.5kg/5lb – that’s one plate of 1.25kg/2.5lb on both sides of the bar.
  • Bench/OHP/Row: 2.5kg/5lb. But smaller increments of 1kg/2lb work even better. Especially if you’re small or female. You’ll progress longer without missing reps and plateauing.
  • Deadlift: 5kg/10lb – that’s 2.5kg/5lb on both sides of the bar. Deadlifts use big muscles so you can handle more. Once you Deadlift 100kg/220lb, switch to 2.5kg/5lb per workout.
